I know, because I lived it for over a decade.

By 2018, I'd built an award-winning mortgage and insurance brokerage - and was completely burnt out. Brilliant people exhausting themselves on work that didn't last.

That experience changed how I see innovation.

I sold the business, took my family backpacking through 23 countries, searching for a better way.

I found an approach that changed everything:

Stop guessing. Start discovering.
Stop doing innovation to people. Start designing with them.

Today, I help leaders and teams make change work inside real organisations - with real constraints.
I've worked with hundreds of leaders across NZ and Australia - founders, executives, government teams - all asking the same question: "There has to be a better way, right?"

My work focuses on the part most innovation efforts fail at: turning good ideas into implemented change.

My approach is called DUCTRI - a framework that extends design thinking to include Resourcing and Implementation. It combines design thinking, AI tools, and behavioural science for making change work in complex organisations.

I've captured this in Innovation in Action, co-authored with Christian Walsh, including the complete toolkit and case studies from 300+ real-world projects.

Big mistake. Most companies focus ONLY on product innovation.

Leaving potentially 90% of value untouched.

Here's what happens when business model innovation is neglected:

• You compete only on features and price - leading to commoditisation.
• Competitors replicate your products, eroding your competitive advantage.
• You miss opportunities to create entirely new markets or revenue streams.

I've seen smart products fail because the underlying business model wasn't great.

Real innovation goes beyond products. It reshapes how you create, deliver, and capture value.

Instead of asking, "What new features can we add?"

Ask, "How can we rethink our business model to create more value for customers - and for ourselves?"

But, don't just stop there. Create multiple options, tease out underlying assumptions, ask, 'what would have to be true'.

Then, run experiments to test the most critical assumptions.

Great products win awards.

Innovative business models win markets (because they understand what they need and why).

Biggest mistake organisations make about innovation?

Assuming implementation will be easy.

So critical things get missed and the result isn’t progress, it’s fear, resistance, confusion, and inertia.

Here’s what actually happens when implementation is underestimated:

- Teams are stretched thin, juggling change on top of business-as-usual.
- Initiatives move fast without shared context, so people don’t know why the change matters.
- Old habits quietly overpower new ways of working, momentum fades, and people revert to what’s familiar.
- Power dynamics create barriers, initiatives stall and "we've always done it tis way" remains

I’ve seen strong ideas fail not because they were bad,
but because leaders assumed change would “take care of itself.”

Implementation is not automatic.
It’s a design challenge.
And it’s human.

Here's some tools to help you support change:
1. Kotter’s 8 Accelerators – Energise people and sustain momentum.
2. Heath Brothers’ Switch Model – Address emotional barriers and enable behavioural change. 
3. Prosci’s ADKAR Model – Create clarity and structure around the steps of change. 
4. McKinsey’s 7-S Model – Align your organisation's complexity with clear strategy.
5. Lewin’s Change Model – Simplify your systemic shifts effectively.
6. Bridge’s Transition Model – Manage your team's emotional journey during change.

Instead of asking:
“Will this change land?”

Ask:
“What will help people adopt, adapt, and sustain it?”

Good companies plan change.
Great companies design implementation.

I've asked hundreds of practitioners the same question: "Where does innovation break down?"

The answer is almost never testing the idea. It's implementation.

And two patterns keep showing up:

We design for decisions, not behaviour. And when power and politics are at play, projects fade.

Here's a useful approach to help address both:

Use the SWITCH framework to design for behaviour change from the start.
It works on three levels:

1. Direct the Rider (clarity) Script the critical moves. Make the next action unmistakable - not debatable. 

2. Motivate the Elephant (emotion) Shrink the change. Show progress already made. People need to feel momentum.

3. Shape the Path (environment) Rally the herd. Change the environment so people make the preferred choice and build a habit.

When you design across all three, you shift from asking people to decide differently to making it easier to behave differently.

That's when implementation sticks.

Your innovation just failed at implementation.

Not because the idea was wrong. 
Not because you didn't test it. 
But because you designed only for logic, not humans.

You spent months on discovery. Mapped every insight. Built something that genuinely solves the problem. Then rollout starts and people just... don't change.

The board's frustrated. Your team's exhausted. And you're left wondering what went wrong.

Here's what actually happened: you only spoke to half the brain.

There's a better way.

Three tools that address the real challenge - human behaviour:

Design the whole solution - Speak to the analytical mind (clarity), support the emotional state, shape the environment. Most teams only tackle clarity. The change that sticks addresses all three.

Sticky Stories - Simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, story-driven. If your pitch sounds like corporate speak, no one remembers it.

Nudges - Small design choices shift behaviour without heavy persuasion. Defaults, prompts, visual cues change everything.

Imagine this instead:
Your team adopts the new process without being told. Leaders in other departments ask how you made it work. Six months later, people can't remember doing it the old way.

That's what happens when you design for behaviour, not just solutions.
