When I used to interview clients for their resumes, I always broke the ice with the same question:

“So… what do you want to be when you grow up?”

Most people laughed and said astronaut or ballerina. 

Some said, “I’m exactly where I want to be.”

Others said, “I have no idea. I’m still figuring it out.”

One day, I asked that question to a National Account Manager in the technology industry.

He didn’t laugh.

He said, “I would like to not be miserable. I would like to not travel five days a week and miss every single event in my kids’ lives. I would like to be home for dinner.”

I told him how sorry I was that he felt that way. No one should be unhappy in their work.

So we started his interview.

He was grumpy.
Short answers.
One- and two-word responses.

Not chatty at all, which, for me, is rare.

About halfway through, frustrated and a little worried, I said,
“At the risk of sounding like a therapist… can you tell me the last day you remember being happy?”

Silence.
Then more silence.

“Did I lose you?” I asked.

He finally said, “My sons race motocross. A few months ago, I got to spend two full days with them at an event. That’s the last thing I did that made me happy.”

We finished the interview, and before hanging up, I said. “You know there’s an entire industry around motocross, right?”

Manufacturers.
Gear companies.
Sponsorships.
Event management.
Training academies.
Parts suppliers.
Media.
Sales.
Operations.

He already knew how to manage accounts and relationships.

I told him, “You might want to think about applying to some of these companies. You’d be around something you actually love. And maybe your next job wouldn’t require living on an airplane.”

He kind of growled. Said he’d think about it.

We delivered his resume and sent him on his way.

A few months later, he emailed me.

He’d accepted a role with an Italian motocross bike manufacturer as their new North American Account Executive.

When he took the job, he went to their headquarters in Bologna, Italy.

And he didn’t go alone. He took his wife. And his kids.

The best part?

His kids thought his job was the coolest thing they’d ever seen.

I called him to congratulate him, and I swear, he sounded like a completely different human being.

Happy.
Chatty.
Excited about his future.

Same person.
Different alignment.

So when someone tells you “a job is a job is a job,” they’re wrong.

You can have:

And a home life that works for you

You don’t have to choose just one.

Sometimes you just have to look a little wider than the industry you’re stuck in…and a little closer to the life you want.
