I’ve been a founder for most of my adult life, from glass-walled boardrooms in New York and Pali Alto to coffee-stained coworking tables in Kosovo and Delhi. Not because I planned it that way, but because I could never quite shake the pull of building something from nothing.

In my early years, I chased growth at all costs. The pace was relentless, the stakes high, and the wins… like realizing a bottled-up vice for the first time. You knew it was staying with you, for better or worse. I built and exited multiple companies, including two at nine-figure valuations.

It looked great on the outside, but inside? I was riding a bull that was kicking my ass.

Building a company is like taking off in a plane you’re still bolting together mid-air. The only goal at first? Get enough distance between you and the ground so when shit goes wrong … and it will … you’ve got time to respond before the ground rushes up to meet you.

If you’re not intentional, that ground gets closer a lot faster than you think.

That realization changed everything.

Today, I’m still building, but on my terms. I help founders scale with freedom: keeping their vision intact, owning their time, and leading teams built on trust and durable systems, not constant fire drills.

A few years ago, I spoke with a founder who was on the edge of shutting his company down.

Revenue was flat.
His team was losing belief.
Investors had stopped returning calls.

On paper, the business looked like it was dying.

Over coffee, he said something I’ll never forget:
“Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”

Not because he lacked intelligence.
Not because the idea was bad.
Because the weight of uncertainty had finally caught up with him.

We talked for hours that day about what it actually means to be a founder.

Founding a company isn’t a straight path.
It’s waking up every day carrying a vision that no one else can fully see yet.
It’s making decisions with incomplete information.
It’s leading people when you yourself are still figuring things out.
It’s continuing forward when the data says “wait.”

Six months later, that same founder called me again.
Different tone. Different energy.

They had pivoted the model.
Closed their first meaningful enterprise client.
The team had regained momentum.

Nothing magical happened.
No overnight breakthrough.

Just one simple decision he kept making every day:
Don’t quit while the vision is still alive.

This is exactly why I started the Founder Stories series.
Because behind every successful company is a founder who had dozens of reasons to stop ... and chose not to.

And those stories are the ones worth telling.

People often ask me where ideas come from.

They expect some lightning-bolt moment.
A sudden flash of brilliance.

In reality, it almost never happens that way.

Usually companies start with something far less glamorous.
A frustration that keeps showing up.

For me, and for many founders I’ve worked with, the pattern is always the same.

You see something broken in the world.
And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
You start thinking about it in the background of your life.

While you’re driving.
While you’re reading something unrelated.
While you’re having conversations with people who don’t even realize they’re describing the problem.

At first, it’s just curiosity.
But over time it becomes something deeper.
A kind of quiet obsession.

Not the loud, motivational kind people post about online.
The quieter version. The one that keeps you working on something long after the excitement wears off.

Because building a company isn’t powered by passion alone.
Passion gets you started.

But what actually carries founders forward is a persistent pull toward a problem they feel responsible for solving.

The founders who last the longest usually aren’t chasing the biggest opportunity.
They’re chasing the problem that refuses to let them go.

So I’m curious:
What’s the problem you can’t stop thinking about?

Starting this week, I’ve been thinking about how often we wait for the “perfect moment” to begin something.

A new idea.
A new habit.
A new challenge.

But most meaningful progress starts with a single step.

Not a perfect one. Just the first one.

A good reminder that big journeys are built quietly, one step at a time.

When you’re in the middle of building something, you rarely stop to look back at the thinking that shaped it.

The frameworks.
The late-night ideas.
The conversations that turned into principles.

Watching it again felt less like reviewing work and more like revisiting a moment in time.

Sometimes the best way to prepare for what’s next… is to remember how it all came together in the first place.
