I’ve been a founder for most of my adult life, from glass-walled boardrooms in New York and Pali Alto to coffee-stained coworking tables in Kosovo and Delhi. Not because I planned it that way, but because I could never quite shake the pull of building something from nothing.

In my early years, I chased growth at all costs. The pace was relentless, the stakes high, and the wins… like realizing a bottled-up vice for the first time. You knew it was staying with you, for better or worse. I built and exited multiple companies, including two at nine-figure valuations.

It looked great on the outside, but inside? I was riding a bull that was kicking my ass.

Building a company is like taking off in a plane you’re still bolting together mid-air. The only goal at first? Get enough distance between you and the ground so when shit goes wrong … and it will … you’ve got time to respond before the ground rushes up to meet you.

If you’re not intentional, that ground gets closer a lot faster than you think.

That realization changed everything.

Today, I’m still building, but on my terms. I help founders scale with freedom: keeping their vision intact, owning their time, and leading teams built on trust and durable systems, not constant fire drills.

I hit a wall when I turned 50.

One of the craziest: crossing Alaska on waverunners.

Not because it sounds cool.
Because energy is a leadership responsibility.

If you’re depleted at home, you’ll eventually pay for it at work. Your company can’t outgrow you.

The sexier the business, the less money it usually makes.

I know that sounds counterintuitive.

But after coaching around 1,500 CEOs every year, I’ve seen enough financial statements to trust the pattern.

I’ve coached the owner of the largest rose producer in his region, the largest sugar cane company in the world, and a massive palm oil company in Latin America with over 20,000 employees.

Large, disciplined, operationally excellent companies.
Boring industries with very strong margins.

I also coach a client whose business is picking up trash. It may not sound impressive, but it is one of the most valuable companies in his market.

Now look at where attention is going.

↪ AI.
↪ Emerging tech.
↪ The next big opportunity.

There is nothing wrong with innovation. But when capital floods into the same “sexy” space, competition increases, volatility rises, and margins get tighter.

Boring businesses operate in fundamentals.

• Energy.
• Transport.
• Infrastructure.
• Food production.
• Waste management.

These are recurring, essential needs. They don’t disappear with trends.

In every gold rush, the durable wealth was built by the people selling the tools, not the ones chasing the gold.

If your goal is headlines, chase what’s fashionable.

If your goal is durability, cash flow, and lower stress, build around essentials.

P.S. Are you building around fundamentals or excitement?

I almost went bankrupt during our best month ever.

Customers were happy.
Sales were breaking records.
The team was working nonstop.

On paper, everything looked perfect.
Then it was Friday. Payroll day.

My accountant walked into my office and said:
“Daniel, we don’t have enough cash to pay the team.”

I didn’t understand.
We had just closed the best month in our history.

How could we be out of money?

That was the day I learned a lesson most CEOs learn the hard way: Revenue is not cash.

We were closing deals.
But clients were paying in 60 and 90 days.
Salaries, rent, and suppliers were due immediately.

The money was in Accounts Receivable.
Not in the bank.

That night, I didn’t sleep.

I had to call friends for short-term loans.
And explain to my team that I had failed to manage the company’s oxygen.

Cash.

Since then, I follow a simple law we teach in Scaling Up: Cash is the fuel for growth.

If you’re driving a Ferrari at 200 km/h and run out of gas, it doesn’t matter how powerful the engine is. You will stop. And someone will hit you from behind.

Growth consumes cash.

The faster you grow, the more oxygen you need.

Today, I’m not impressed by revenue charts.
I’m impressed by a strong Cash Conversion Cycle.

Because if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.
If you don’t manage cash, your success will bury you.

The wrong clients will limit your growth.

This is one of the hardest lessons for founders.

In the early stages, you say yes to almost everyone.

You need revenue.
You need validation.
You need momentum.

So you say yes.

But what works in Stage 1 will break you in Stage 3.

As your company grows, you must become more selective. Not every client who can pay you is a good client.

Some drain your time.
Some refuse to evolve with you.
Some demand more than they contribute.

If you try to serve everyone the same way forever, you will go crazy.

At some point, you must raise the bar.

You define:
• How you work
• What you charge
• What behavior you expect
• What a healthy partnership looks like

And you communicate it clearly:

“This is how we operate at the next level.”
“If this doesn’t work for you, we’re not the right fit.”

Growth requires boundaries.

Your company is like a person.

As it matures, it needs different tools, different systems, and different relationships.

What got you here won’t get you where you want to go. You have to rise.

This is where growth actually breaks.

In the first stage, you don’t actually need to lead.

You’re making every decision.
You’re doing everything yourself.
You’re working inside the business every day.

That works… for a while.

The problem shows up when you try to step back and work on the business.

That’s when you become the bottleneck.
Because growth now requires leadership.

And leadership starts with one uncomfortable shift:
You have to verbalize direction.

Not in your head. Not vaguely. Out loud.

“This is what we’re doing.”
“This is who we’re serving.”
“This is what success looks like.”

Only then does delegation work.

Delegation is not handing off tasks.
It’s clearly telling people what you expect from them.

When direction stays in your head, growth slows down.

If you have 6 products, you have 0 focus.

You don’t scale by adding more.
You scale by simplifying.

At this stage, your job is to align the company around what already works.

If you’re running 5 or 6 products, that’s usually the constraint. You’re splitting focus, talent, and attention across too many priorities.

Here’s the move:

1. Cut the product list.
↳ Keep 1–2 offers that your market is already demanding.

2. Protect margin.
↳ If it doesn’t produce healthy profit, it’s a distraction.

3. Align everyone around the same scoreboard.
↳ Clarity has to become structure, or execution drifts.

The best companies in the world don’t do everything.

They know what works. Then they do those 2–3 things with discipline until it compounds.

I’ve worked with thousands of CEOs navigating fast growth. When revenue slows, the reaction is automatic.

Sell more. Hire more. Expand.

Volume doesn’t fix structural weakness. It exposes it.

The companies that scale don’t solve growth by pushing harder. They strengthen the system underneath.

1. They understand how margin is built.
2. They optimize the process, not silos.
3. They finish the stage before scaling.
4. They deploy cash against clear thresholds.

Volume multiplies whatever system you already have.
If the foundation is weak, growth multiplies instability.

5 Strategy Decisions That Decide If You Can Scale in Q2

At 35, my company went bankrupt.

And my life was falling apart with it.

I was in financial trouble.

My marriage was struggling. My relationship with my kids was not where it needed to be. I was overweight. I was waking up in the middle of the night depressed.

Then one day, I made a decision:

I was done living by default.

So I took a piece of paper and wrote down how I wanted my life to look.

I wrote a 20-year plan around:

• The kind of husband and father I wanted to be
• The relationships I wanted to build
• The income I wanted to create
• The impact I wanted to make
• The books I wanted to write
• The life I wanted to live

Today, I’m 18 years into that plan.

And I’ve achieved around 80% of it.

That experience changed how I think about strategy.

Now when CEOs ask me strategic questions, I usually start here: What do you want your life to look like?

Your business plan should support your life plan.

Otherwise, growth pulls you in directions you never meant to go.

You have to design your life first.
Then build a business that supports it.
