Ok this is going to sound tricky...

There are times when your employee asks for your feedback, but isn't looking for your feedback...

Sometimes what they're looking for is your validation that they’re moving in the right direction.

They’re looking for your acknowledgement, your approval, your vote of confidence.
 
So how do you figure out what they want? A simple: "What type of information would be most helpful to you in this moment?" is a good start.

Once you ask. Don't fill the silence. Let them guide you before you guide them.

Most leaders don't realize this but one of the fastest ways you can become a better leader is by simply asking your people for feedback. 

I'm not talking about asking feedback for the heck of it. I'm talking about asking real, raw, *constructive* feedback about your leadership style.

Stuff like:

1) "What do I do that gets in your way?"

2) "What's one thing you need me to stop doing?"

3) "What's one thing you need from me that you're not getting?"

Once you ask, stop talking, and start listening. Like *really* listen to what your employee is saying and not saying. Make notes, reflect on what they're saying and implement it. 

Do this regularly and see what a great leader you become in no time

Here's a leadership regret of mine.

I didn't ask for as much feedback as I should've.

I left money on the table...and I'm still irritated about it!

It took me years of leading to understand that my job wasn't just to give feedback to others. It was also to ask others for their feedback about me!

(Not just in performance reviews. But in the flow of work)

One of the highest-leverage leadership things you can do for yourself *and* your team is to ask them for their feedback. 

But here's where things get tricky.

Asking, "Do you have any feedback for me?" ain't gonna cut it. You're not going to get *actionable* feedback.

So what do you do? How do you ask in a way that gets you real, raw, actionable feedback?
