I worked clinically at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre and other global institutions. Motivated to take my career to the next level, I transitioned into commercial medicine and business development, which took me around the world.

In 2018, I launched Leanne Elich Consulting. We work closely with clients and offer a range of bespoke consulting, business, and executive coaching services in sales, marketing, leadership, and strategic management.

As a neuroscientist, I’ve spent my life cracking the code on those sneaky thoughts and feelings that run our lives.

Today’s bite is about how your perception is shaped by framing. 
For example, referencing how lean a steak is will boost perceptions of quality.

Imagine two signs outside the same restaurant:
🍽️ “90% of customers loved our steak.”
❌ “Only 10% of customers didn’t like our steak.”
Both statements tell you exactly the same thing, yet they don’t feel the same.

We like to think our decisions are based on logic. But often, what really drives us isn’t certainty, it’s curiosity.

Curiosity Bias is the brain’s built-in itch for incomplete information. When people are given a hint but not the whole story, dopamine spikes. The brain shifts into a seeking state, craving resolution. It’s why we click “Read more,” open mystery boxes, or scroll through endless “You’ll never guess what happened next” headlines. 🤔

Brands that understand this bias don’t just share information. They strategically withhold it.

Teasers outperform full reveals.

“Coming soon” sparks more engagement than “Available now.”

A headline with a gap: “The One Thing You’re Missing in Your Strategy”, drives more clicks than “Three Steps to Better Selling.”

In psychology, this is called the information gap theory. The moment you sense a gap between what you know and what you want to know, your brain won’t rest until it’s closed. 🧠

So next time you’re crafting a campaign, a landing page, or even a pitch, don’t just give answers. Create questions.

Because curiosity isn’t just powerful.
It’s profitable!

Here’s where it gets fascinating.
When something is framed in terms of presence (“90% loved it”), the brain interprets it as a gain frame. Dopamine lights up, and we lean in with curiosity and confidence. But when framed in terms of absence (“10% didn’t like it”), the amygdala, our brain’s threat detector, activates, nudging us to avoid risk. 🙅

This subtle linguistic twist can determine whether someone buys, clicks, or walks away.

Why this works: 🧠
People are far more motivated to act when benefits are framed in terms of what they gain, not what they avoid.

So next time you’re writing copy, pitching an idea, or pricing a product, ask:
👉 Am I framing this in terms of presence or absence?

Because the difference between “75% fat-free” and “contains 25% fat” could be the difference between conversion and hesitation.

Ah, the humble sales pitch. It’s a delicate dance between captivating attention and landing that sweet deal. But just like a tango gone wrong, the wrong words can leave your prospect shuffling away, muttering, “Never again.”

In sales prospecting, language is your sword and shield.
However...using the wrong words can be an absolute deal-breaker.🙅

Here are the top 10 words we need to avoid when prospecting:

🔸 Just
🔸 Guarantee
🔸 Deal
🔸 Discount
🔸 Failure
🔸 Impossible
🔸 Pricey
🔸 Complicated
🔸 Maybe

Did you know...that using “productised” booking modules on your website can make a big difference? They’re likely to boost your conversions and keep your customers happy compared to those open-ended inquiry forms!

Why does this happen? 🧠
It’s all about making things easier! When you have a booking module with set options, potential customers can quickly see what works for them. It saves them the hassle of explaining their needs or problems in detail. Plus, if they have complex questions, they can easily schedule a call without filling out long forms first.

Not only does this approach increase the chances of bookings, but it also helps set clear expectations. When people know what to expect, they’re more likely to be satisfied with your service! 👍

Understanding what truly drives customers during these high-stimulus moments can help businesses not only boost sales but also build relationships that last long after the discounts disappear.

Did you know... that specific numbers can sell a product better than round numbers?

A 2006 study by Schindler (Rutgers University) and Yalch (University of Washington) found exactly this.

They showed participants two versions of the same ad.

“It takes 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint.”
vs.
“It takes 2 minutes to pour the perfect pint.”

The result? 📈
Claims using specific numbers were rated 10% more believable than those using rounded ones.

Why did this happen? 🧠
Our brains associate precision with truth. Specifically, the “119.5 seconds” feels researched, measured, and real. Rounded numbers, on the other hand, feel like guesses.

When Guinness says it takes exactly 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint, we don’t question it; we assume they’ve done the research.

This is called Specific Number Bias.

➡️ Specific numbers signal credibility
➡️ Precision reduces perceived uncertainty
➡️ The brain interprets detail as evidence

Did you know...that priming your customers with value can increase buy-in by up to 267%.

Let's look at this brilliant example from Dr Robert Cialdini.

A Boy Scout was struggling to sell popcorn outside a supermarket. Their question was straightforward: “Would you like to buy some popcorn?” Only 15% said yes. Most shoppers had just spent money and weren’t in the mood for more.🍿

They then made one subtle shift and started with a values-based question rather than a purchase question.

First asked: “Do you support the Boy Scouts?”
Almost everyone said yes.

Then followed with: “Would you like to buy some popcorn to support the Boy Scouts?”

The results were dramatic. Sales jumped from 15% to 55%, a 267% increase. Some who didn’t even want popcorn still handed over cash, saying, “I don’t want popcorn, but here’s a donation.”💰

Why? Because once we "publicly" align ourselves with a value, we feel compelled to behave consistently with it.

The Hidden Flaw in Financial Rewards
What if I told you I’d give you $100 just for filling out a short survey? Easy money, right?

But what if I told you that you’d only get the money a month from now? Still interested? Probably less so.

This is a classic example of a cognitive bias known as hyperbolic discounting.

Why does it happen? 🧠
Back in the days, securing immediate resources (food, shelter, safety) was critical because tomorrow wasn't guaranteed. It’s not the case today, but you can’t fool evolution.
This means that a financial incentive loses its persuasive power the longer you have to wait for it.

What to do instead?🚀
Instant incentives: If you promise your clients a reward, give it to them as soon as possible.
Staged rewards: If you can't give clients the full reward at once, break the incentive into multiple payouts.
Non-monetary immediate benefits: Offer instant access to premium features or other benefits customers can use right away.

But remember... a smooth, enjoyable service will keep them engaged far more than a one-time reward.
