Fact: My Alma Mater called the moment I walked out the door after my diploma examination. I've been teaching at "my" Department of Science of Communication since the dawn of the new millenium. And I'm extremely proud of it. (Our department constantly ranks in the Shanhai Top 10!)

Curricula change and adapt. I've always taught various facets of new media, from online journalism to scientific data analysis. Since 5 years I'm teaching the new, dedicated course "Social Media A" which is part of the SoC (Science of Communication) curriculum.

The course is comprised of theory and practical appliactions. Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr teaches the theory part while I talk about marketing, GDPR and social media publishing. And of course LinkedIn, a great tool for students and researchers alike.

We were young and bold.

And when I fired Premiere up for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing.

But I knew how to Google.

My 2-minute team presentation received more exposure at Kristallwelten-Museum than any of my "viral"  Youtube shorts. (And I still love that retro-b/w-look.)

But that was just one face of the metaphorical crystal. I was also resonsible for our online marketing activities. 💎

mp3 players were bulky, Apple hadn't invented the iPod yet.

The term "Podcast" was yet to be coined. If you wanted to get word out, you'd either have to sign with a hip hop label or work for a radio station.

We picked a national one and they played our tunes for years. (When i say tunes I mean interviews & features.)

As in: My colleagues from medianexus (Sandra Manhartseder and Peter Steinberger) and me recorded and produced a couple of features for Austrian radio station Ö1's media magazine "matrix".

And contrary to popular opinion: The internet does forget. But Ö1 is still standing strong. (I admit though that I always listen to FM4 in my car.)

🟦 Givemewings was a "social platform" conceptualized and built by Red Bull a couple of years before the term was coined but the site never went live. ⏩

I was responsible for the music channel, including managing the editorial content and establishing a download platform.

The site never went online.

(But for two years, I had daily access to free, unlimited supply of Red Bull. Haven't been able to ever touch a can since week two. Great content marketing, terrible refreshment, if you ask me.)

The em dash is not the offender though.
A lack of original thought is.

Yes, out-of-the-box AI writing style is quirky.
That’s easily fixed.

Original thought?
Nobody will ever create a prompt for that.

Because I see outdated advice everywhere.

One expert announced "LinkedIn will launch an AI algorithm in 2026".
Another recommends all-bold copy and 25 tags per post.

It's easy to get confused.
I get it, this platform isn't your fulltime job.

Finding out what works on your own?
Almost impossible in an AI-driven environment.

This checklist covers the basics.
Luckily, content strategy is 90% basics.

1. When to post

🔷 Try to post during weekday mornings, Monday to Friday. 
🔹 If you want to post on Saturdays and Sundays, do it from your phone, and make the posts short, visual, and uplifting.
🔹 Posting 2-3 times per week? Avoid Mondays and Fridays.

2. How often to post

🔷 The frequency of your posting can be anywhere from daily to once every two weeks and still work.
🔹 By posting daily, you increase the speed at which you will be able to reach new people.
🔹 In case you post less than twice a month, potential new followers may not have the chance to see you.

3. Using Hashtags

🔷 Put 1 or 2 hashtags in each post, but never more than that.
🔹 They are not that efficient in extending your reach, and a large number  limits your impressions.
🔹 Use them mainly to label your own content.

4. Tagging people and companies

🔷 About 5 tags in total (people + brands) is a good upper limit.
🔹 Don't mass, tag people unless you are sharing event albums or team photos.

5. Post Format

🔷 Post single images, carousels/documents, and newsletters.
🔹 Outside the US, videos have lost a lot of the outreach in various regions.
🔹 Switch between different formats for a little boost.

6. External links

🔷 Put the URL directly into the post, but do not show the link preview.
🔹 Don't hide the links in the comments.
🔹 Don't load your post with a lot of different links.

7. Post layout

🔷 First, a strong hook (max. ~120 characters).
🔹 Short paragraphs, try writing at least 1,200 characters in total.
🔹 There is no need for bold or italics if you use the line breaks and a few emojis, as they facilitate quick scanning.

8. Size of visuals

🔷 For single images, carousels, and videos, go with 4:5.
🔹 Landscape formats consume less space on mobile and desktop screens.

9. Content mix

🔷 Basic division: 60% professional content, 20% personal stories, 15% opinion, 5% advertising.
🔹 Advanced creators combine these in one post instead of switching "types" from day to day.


Utterly doable, right?

Don't overcomplicate your posting strategy.
Focusing on creating connections beats the best viral post!

LinkedIn says gender is not a ranking signal.

Some templates are awe-inspiring, some are awful.
Guess that's in the eye of the beholder.

Not a question of taste though:

A new offer, discovered by one of my agents.
(AKA Google Alerts. Didn't say AI agents.)

1,000 "real" Likes and Followers for the lump sum of 105 bucks.
Delivered in 1 to 5 days.

They claim it's a "Premium, risk-free growth service trusted by professionals."
No reviews.

I do believe there's little risk. For the vendor.

I get why this is tempting for beginners.
Organic follower growth is stagnating, ads are expensive.

💲☠️ 10 bucks per 100 followers is as cheap as it is deadly for your page.

Imagine a page with 1.000 human followers growing to 1.200 overnight.
The 1.000 fake accounts won't ever react.
Or multiply.
Or buy.

Engagement quality level: subterranean.

Faking is unethical, yes.
Luckily it comes with a backlash.

Smart heads of marketing and sales enable their teams.
Thought leaders drive growth and visibility.
Their networks are conversion paradise.

You already have the dream team you need.
Now you have to create momentum and direction.

Time to start Googling.
Time to fire up Chippy, Gemi and Plexi.

I learned everything about the mower’s anatomy.
Just not how to fix it.

After hours of frustration, I called my neighbor.

Kevin is the commander of the local fire department and a genius with machinery.

I explained my conundrum and he started smiling:
"Did you turn your wrench the other way?"

Turns out, one knife axle sports a left-hand thread.
The other thread is right-handed,
as both knives rotate in opposite directions.

I had only used single-blade mowers before.
I had even asked Chippy how to best loosen a stuck axle screw.

If you don't ask the right question, you won't get the right answer.
AI and algorithms are brutally honest that way.
They do exactly what you ask, not what you need.

Same story with LinkedIn™.

You see, this platform looks and smells just like B2C social media.
But some threads are left-handed here.

An experienced LinkedIn™ trainer can tell the difference with a blindfold on.

I'll even bring my lifting jack for starters.

1. Prioritize 15+ word comments: Don’t just "Like." A substantive comment (15+ words) drives ~10x more visibility.

2. Hit the "Golden Hour": Speed matters. Concentrate high-quality interactions within the first 60–90 minutes of posting.

3. Ditch "Pod" Behavior: Don't swarm. Stagger employee engagement over several hours so it looks more organic and avoids spam filters.

4. Use "Instant Repost": Want to boost the Company Page? Instant Repost. "Repost with Thoughts" often cannibalizes the original post’s reach.

5. Spark Conversation: Don't post and ghost. Ask a question or tag a colleague to trigger a reply chain—the algorithm loves community.

6. Boost "Dwell Time": Actually read the content. Scroll through the PDF or watch the video before liking; the algorithm flags blind engagement.

7. Leverage the "Save": It’s a super-metric for educational content. Hitting "Save" signals long-term utility.

A friendly pop-up invited me to try AI search for prospecting.

Background:

LinkedIn™ launched the new AI search in the US.
It's not available in other countries.
There’s no rollout timeline yet.

This could quietly rewrite how we build target lists.

How does it work?

Sales Navigator just learned to speak plain English.
It's prompt-based search: you ask for specific roles.
E.g. "Find the heads of sales departments in Austrian automotive companies."

What can it do?

I saw the feature for the first time 10 minutes ago.
I'll experiment thoroughly and compare the results with my "traditional" search.

I can't wait to try this in combination with buyer intent signals to build "reandy now" lists.

Which company page updates should I share?

Not every single one, if you want results:

If you repost every company update, your network stops reading you.

Corporate Influencers ≠ Brand Bots.
Employee Advocacy ≠ duplicating the company page.

The key question:
Which topics does your audience care about?

It's really that simple.

Clients book my training sessions to enable their employees to find their own voice. Yes, reposted content is a vital part of the mixture.

As Paracelsus said: “It's all about the amount.”
Same rule for LinkedIn: Dosage over duplication.

Let's say you're connected with a lot of professionals in the automotive industry.
Ask yourself: “Would they care about this post?”

Yes → Share it.
No → Don't.

What about heterogeneous networks?
(Many of us cater to different target audiences.)

Tweak the question! Ask yourself:
“Does the segment of my network I'm trying to reach care about this topic?”

Run your next three reposts through this filter and see what changes.

PS: Marketers, do you encourage your team to repost (selectively)?

Did you know that Chile worries most about upcoming brain interfaces?

In my academic lecture today, I am going to talk about these different approaches and their implications. GDPR, DSA, and AI Act are merely one legal framework among many.

All I know is: If I were fifteen now and had to prepare a presentation for high school, I wouldn't want to do it without YouTube and Reddit.

Australia just banned citizens younger than 16 from using:

❌ TikTok
❌ Snapchat
❌ X
❌ YouTube, Twitch, Kick
❌ Reddit

The law lists a few exceptions only:

✔️ WhatsApp, Messenger Kids
✔️ Roblox and Gaming Platforms
✔️ Google Classroom, YouTube Kids
✔️ Kids Helpline

And what about LinkedIn? The B2B platform is not explicitly mentioned but requires a minimum age of 16 in its ToS.

I have a strong opinion on social media bans.
