Fact: My Alma Mater called the moment I walked out the door after my diploma examination. I've been teaching at "my" Department of Science of Communication since the dawn of the new millenium. And I'm extremely proud of it. (Our department constantly ranks in the Shanhai Top 10!)

Curricula change and adapt. I've always taught various facets of new media, from online journalism to scientific data analysis. Since 5 years I'm teaching the new, dedicated course "Social Media A" which is part of the SoC (Science of Communication) curriculum.

The course is comprised of theory and practical appliactions. Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr teaches the theory part while I talk about marketing, GDPR and social media publishing. And of course LinkedIn, a great tool for students and researchers alike.

🟦 How do you learn video editing the hard way? Your first clip is an installation to be displayed in Austria's most popular museum. ⏩

We were young and bold.

And when I fired Premiere up for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing.

But I knew how to Google.

My 2-minute team presentation received more exposure at Kristallwelten-Museum than any of my "viral"  Youtube shorts. (And I still love that retro-b/w-look.)

But that was just one face of the metaphorical crystal. I was also resonsible for our online marketing activities. 💎

mp3 players were bulky, Apple hadn't invented the iPod yet.

The term "Podcast" was yet to be coined. If you wanted to get word out, you'd either have to sign with a hip hop label or work for a radio station.

We picked a national one and they played our tunes for years. (When i say tunes I mean interviews & features.)

As in: My colleagues from medianexus (Sandra Manhartseder and Peter Steinberger) and me recorded and produced a couple of features for Austrian radio station Ö1's media magazine "matrix".

And contrary to popular opinion: The internet does forget. But Ö1 is still standing strong. (I admit though that I always listen to FM4 in my car.)

🟦 Givemewings was a "social platform" conceptualized and built by Red Bull a couple of years before the term was coined but the site never went live. ⏩

I was responsible for the music channel, including managing the editorial content and establishing a download platform.

The site never went online.

(But for two years, I had daily access to free, unlimited supply of Red Bull. Haven't been able to ever touch a can since week two. Great content marketing, terrible refreshment, if you ask me.)

LinkedIn wir müssen reden! Haben wir ein Female-Reach-GAP? 💃

Ich wollte meinen Augen kaum trauen, doch es scheint einen Gender-Reach -GAP in den Algorithmen von LinkedIn zum Nachteil von Frauen zu geben.

Gestern fragte mich eine Mitarbeiterin von Habitat for Humanity Deutschland  im LinkedIn-Training, ob ich das schon mitbekommen habe, dass Frauen angeblich bei der Ausspielung benachteiligt werden?

Ich sagte, dass es eher umgekehrt ist und kamen auf die Model-Posen-Beitragsstrategie zu sprechen, wo jedes Mal egal, welches Thema besprochen wird, ein hübsches Foto den Auftakt macht. Und meistens die Männer jammern, dass sie diese Karte ja leider nicht spielen könnten. 
Doch der Algo unterstützt das, worauf die Männer äh Menschen reagieren.

Doch genau das war nicht das Problem.

Es gäbe in ihrem Feed gerade jede Menge Diskussionen darüber und Erfahrungswerte von Frauen, dass nachdem sie ihr Gender von Female auf Male umgestellt haben, die Reichweite der Beiträge unfassbar in die Höhe schnellen.

Ein diskriminierender BIAS im System, sobald ich mich in den demographischen Daten als Frau oute. 

In der Bildergalerie seht ihr 3 Postings von Frauen, die darüber berichten und auch Zahlen liefern.

Danke Sally Skinner, Kristin Reinbach und Alix Willemez, PhD für eure Tests und dass ihr darauf aufmerksam macht. 

Ich wollte das zuerst nicht glauben. Werde es nun selber testen und habe in meinen Einstellungen mich von Frau zu Mann umgestellt.

Auch die Werbeeinstellungen haben ich bestätigt. Bin gepannt, ob ich jetzt mehr Entscheider und männliche Werbung sehe als zuvor.

Ob es krass den Reach beeinflusst, werden wir sehen. Ich war im Urlaub und muss sowieso einiges aufholen. Doch die letzten Postings nach dem Urlaub waren alle um die 3K trotz krassem Engagement und Diskussion.

Mal sehen, ob die Male-Karte sticht.
Wer macht mit uns probiert es aus?
Und traut sich ein Mann von Mann auf Frau zu wechseln und noch mehr Reichweite eventuell einzubüßen?

RIP Didi - Alle 12 Minuten erhält ein Mensch in Deutschland die Diagnose Blutkrebs 🩸

Meine Tante "Didi" starb am 8. Dezember 1997 an Leukämie - sie war erst 36 Jahre alt. Inzwischen bin ich älter als sie und erinnere mich immer an sie am Tag ihres Todes und halte inne zum Nachdenken. Sie war mir als Teenager immer eine gute Beraterin. 

Was wäre passiert, wenn sie ihre*n Lebensretter*in gefunden hätte? Und wie hätte sie mich weiterhin begleitet? Viele Menschen stehen vor diesem Schicksal, aber wir alle können einen Beitrag dazu leisten, die Chancen auf ein 2. Leben zu erhöhen. 

Kurz nach diesem Schicksalsschlag ließ ich mich typisieren. Damals war es noch komplizierter. Ich habe bei der DKMS einen Typisierungssatz angefordert. Ich ging damit zum Arzt und nahm Blut ab, so dass es getestet wurde und ich einen Eintrag in der Spendendatenbank bekam. 

Heutzutage ist es so einfach, Lebensspender zu werden: Ein Wangenspeichelabstrich mit einem "Wattestäbchen" ist ausreichend: Lukas Podolski hat dafür bereits Werbung gemacht. 

Und wenn du der richtige Spendende für eine Person bist, brauchst du keine Angst zu haben: Das Verfahren ist viel einfacher geworden.
