Fact: My Alma Mater called the moment I walked out the door after my diploma examination. I've been teaching at "my" Department of Science of Communication since the dawn of the new millenium. And I'm extremely proud of it. (Our department constantly ranks in the Shanhai Top 10!)

Curricula change and adapt. I've always taught various facets of new media, from online journalism to scientific data analysis. Since 5 years I'm teaching the new, dedicated course "Social Media A" which is part of the SoC (Science of Communication) curriculum.

The course is comprised of theory and practical appliactions. Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr teaches the theory part while I talk about marketing, GDPR and social media publishing. And of course LinkedIn, a great tool for students and researchers alike.

🟦 How do you learn video editing the hard way? Your first clip is an installation to be displayed in Austria's most popular museum. ⏩

We were young and bold.

And when I fired Premiere up for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing.

But I knew how to Google.

My 2-minute team presentation received more exposure at Kristallwelten-Museum than any of my "viral"  Youtube shorts. (And I still love that retro-b/w-look.)

But that was just one face of the metaphorical crystal. I was also resonsible for our online marketing activities. 💎

mp3 players were bulky, Apple hadn't invented the iPod yet.

The term "Podcast" was yet to be coined. If you wanted to get word out, you'd either have to sign with a hip hop label or work for a radio station.

We picked a national one and they played our tunes for years. (When i say tunes I mean interviews & features.)

As in: My colleagues from medianexus (Sandra Manhartseder and Peter Steinberger) and me recorded and produced a couple of features for Austrian radio station Ö1's media magazine "matrix".

And contrary to popular opinion: The internet does forget. But Ö1 is still standing strong. (I admit though that I always listen to FM4 in my car.)

🟦 Givemewings was a "social platform" conceptualized and built by Red Bull a couple of years before the term was coined but the site never went live. ⏩

I was responsible for the music channel, including managing the editorial content and establishing a download platform.

The site never went online.

(But for two years, I had daily access to free, unlimited supply of Red Bull. Haven't been able to ever touch a can since week two. Great content marketing, terrible refreshment, if you ask me.)

Ze hield van haar werk.
Van de projecten, het tempo, de samenwerking. Tot één collega die veilige sfeer langzaam veranderde.

Eerst waren het “grapjes”.
Een opmerking hier, een aanraking daar.
Iedereen lachte erom, behalve zij.

Toen ze er iets van zei,
werd ze weggezet als “overgevoelig”.

Het plezier dat ze ooit voelde,
werd vervangen door spanning en stilte.

Uiteindelijk vertrok ze.
Niet omdat ze haar werk niet meer leuk vond,
maar omdat ze zich niet meer veilig voelde om het te blijven doen.

👉 Mensen verlaten zelden hun werk.
 Ze verlaten de omgeving die het onmogelijk maakt om ervan te blijven houden.

Er is niets ergers dan je baan waar je van houdt te moeten verlaten,
omdat je de omgeving haat!

👉Er zijn mensen met 20 jaar ervaring die in vijf minuten vertrouwen kunnen breken.

👉En er zijn professionals die net komen kijken, maar binnen een week het hele team optillen.

Het verschil zit bijna nooit in vaardigheden.
Het zit in hoe je met mensen omgaat.

Ik sprak laatst een kandidaat die technisch briljant was.
Ervaring, kennis, certificaten, alles klopte.

Maar toen ik doorvroeg naar samenwerking, conflicten, feedback en empathie, 

viel het stil.

Zijn vorige team had het zwaar met hem.
Niet omdat hij het werk niet aankon, maar omdat hij de mensen niet aankon.

En dat zien we steeds vaker:
organisaties die worstelen met experts die geweldige output leveren, maar ondertussen relaties beschadigen,  teams onder druk zetten en de sfeer om zeep helpen.

Je kunt de beste in je vak zijn, maar als mensen zuchten wanneer je binnenloopt, dan is dat een veel grotere rode vlag dan een ontbrekende certificering.

De waarheid is simpel: vaardigheden leer je. Menselijkheid toon je!

👉 In een wereld waar #AI veel werk kan overnemen, blijft één ding onvervangbaar: en dat is de manier waarop we met elkaar omgaan!

ZE VROEG of ze 3 dagen vanaf huis kon werken.
Reden? De drukke verkeersdrukte.

Door HYBRIDE te werken, kon ze 3 uur per dag reistijd besparen en meer werk gedaan krijgen.

Verzoek: AFGEWEZEN.
Reden: "Alle medewerkers moeten op het KANTOOR zijn."

Niet veel later nam ze ontslag 🫣

Dus een werkgever VERLOOR een loyale en productieve medewerker vanwege een star beleid.

FLEXIBILITEIT is niet langer alleen een extraatje; het is een noodzaak die veel medewerkers belangrijk vinden voor hun carrière en privéleven.

Op weg naar mijn werk werd ik afgesneden bij een kruispunt en kreeg er een middelvinger bij cadeau.

Ik haalde adem en liet het gaan, maandagen hé.
Maar 20 min later zat hij tegenover me.

In mijn kantoor.
Als kandidaat voor een sollicitatiegesprek.

Zijn gezicht sprak boekdelen.
Hij besefte ineens iets waar veel mensen pas laat achter komen:

📍Je gedrag reist met je mee, ook naar plekken waar je het niet verwacht.

En hier komt het mooie (en misschien wel het pijnlijke):
Ik heb hem gewoon gesproken. Professioneel, respectvol.
Want respect geef je niet op basis van een cv.

👉Respect geef je omdat jij kiest wie je bent.

Het was voor mij weer een herinnering aan iets heel simpels:
We weten nooit wie er voor ons rijdt, naast ons staat, of later tegenover ons komt te zitten.

We weten wél dat, hoe we met anderen omgaan, meer zegt over ons karakter dan welke functie of titel ook.

👉 Respect is geen reactie op rang of positie.

Het is een gewoonte.
En het opent deuren waar kwalificaties dat soms niet kunnen.

Teams hebben eindelijk lucht, deadlines zijn afgerond en de druk is tijdelijk weg.

Kandidaten hebben juist dan tijd om in gesprek te gaan, soms zelfs méér dan in de rest van het jaar.

En toch is december voor veel organisaties een periode waarin recruitment compleet stilvalt.
“Dat doen we in januari wel weer.”

Tot februari aanbreekt.
Dan lopen de agenda’s over, de druk schiet omhoog, het ziekteverzuim neemt toe en de wervingsnood wordt acuut.

Maar juist dán is er geen ruimte meer om goede gesprekken te voeren, laat staan om kritisch te zijn op kwaliteit.

En het wrange is: 
tegen die tijd zijn de beste kandidaten vaak al vertrokken naar organisaties die wél vooruit dachten.

Niet omdat ze meer budget hadden, maar omdat ze simpelweg eerder begonnen. Te laat starten met recruitment betekent later harder moeten werken met minder resultaat.

En dat is precies wat veel bedrijven zichzelf onnodig aandoen.
👉 Talent wacht niet.

Talent kiest de organisaties die beschikbaar zijn, op het moment dat zij ook beschikbaar zijn.

Toen ik begon met LinkedIn dacht ik vooral: “Wie zit er nou op míjn verhaal te wachten? 

Wat moet ik überhaupt posten?”

Met mijn 327 connecties voelde het alsof ik in het luchtledige schreef.

Maar gaandeweg veranderde er iets.

Ik begon te delen wat ik écht meemaakte, waar ik tegenaan liep en wat ik leerde in recruitment en samenwerken met organisaties. En nu, een tijd later, mag ik mijn ideeën delen, word ik gevraagd om mijn inzichten te geven en help ik organisaties met LinkedIn, (duurzame) recruitment en psychologische veiligheid.

Bizar eigenlijk, hoe ver je komt als je gewoon begint.
