Want to know how long your job search will actually take? Here are the benchmarks I see with senior-level searches:

2 months: You're targeting exactly what you've done before. You have a strong network, proven results in a high-demand role, and your interview skills are sharp. You have connections that are ready and willing to open doors for you.

4 months: You're targeting the same role or something close to it. You have strong networking skills and your personal brand is dialed in. You're working aggressively to get in front of the right opportunities.

6 months: You're making a moderate career shift. Or you're moving more slowly or deliberately. Or you're targeting highly competitive roles in fields that are contracting. Or you have gaps in your approach that are creating friction.

12+ months: You're making a significant career pivot—changing industry, function, and level simultaneously. Or you have major gaps in your strategy that aren't being addressed.

These are benchmarks based on what I see working with senior professionals, not guarantees. Your timeline depends on dozens of variables specific to your situation.

What matters most? Having realistic expectations so you can build the right action plan.

Most people either overestimate their efforts or underestimate their gaps. Both cost you time and momentum.

"I'm not networking because I don't have the right network."

Every single week, I hear this from senior leaders.

Other versions I hear regularly:

- I've tapped out my network
- I haven't been in touch with my network, so don't want to reach out now
- I want to make sure that I have everything polished before I reach out to my network

Regardless of the exact hesitation, the level of hesitation is REAL.

Last fall in our Job Search Accelerator program, 100% of members shared some level of fear and resistance to networking.

But here's what I've learned from hundreds of career transitions:

The fears and reservations you have about networking are not the reality.

Here's what networking actually is: Connection and curiosity.
Not schmoozing. Not transactional asks. Not being "on."
Just genuine questions + people who might have insights.

- You don't "need" to have a network
- Your network doesn't need to be "strong"
- You don't need the "right" network
- You don't need to be "perfect" before you reach out

All you need is some questions that you're genuinely curious about, and an idea of the type of person who you think could help answer those questions for you.

That's it.

What happened when those hesitant members pushed through anyway?

100% have now had networking conversations and reported back that:

People are so kind
They are actually kind of fun
They have learned a lot and refined their clarity
They've been introduced to new people
They've been referred or invited for various job opportunities
They've gained new mentors/sponsors from single conversations
They've landed new clients
Some have even landed dream jobs

So if you're hesitating today: one conversation. One genuine question. That's all it takes to start.

Last spring, a senior leader came to me frustrated.

He'd been interviewing for months. Making it to final rounds consistently. But kept falling off right at the end.

He couldn't figure out what he was doing wrong.

Within one conversation, the issue became clear: his bottleneck wasn't communication skills. It was clarity and positioning.

He was interviewing for technical leadership roles because that's what his resume screamed. But he didn't actually want those roles.

So in every interview, he showed up confident in his experience, but lukewarm about the work. Interviewers could feel it.

No amount of interview prep was going to fix a misalignment problem.

Once we gained clarity on what he actually wanted and shifted his entire positioning, everything changed. He started getting interviews for the right roles. And landed at one of the hardest companies to break into in his industry.

Here's what I've learned from working with hundreds of senior leaders in transition: most people aren't sure what the problem is. But most often, it's one of three bottlenecks:

Clarity and positioning: You're not clear on your target, or your brand doesn't match what you're going after

Job search strategy: You're using the wrong tactics for your specific situation

Securing the offer: You're getting interviews but can't communicate your value in a way that closes the deal

Is applying to jobs a waste of time?

This is a question a lot of job seekers wonder about, especially right now with endless conflicting advice on the internet like:

"198.8% of jobs are never ever posted!"
"Most job postings aren't even real, good luck"
"99.9% of jobs are hired through the hidden job market!"

There's a lot of doom and gloom out there.

While I agree that the hiring process these days is mostly a total dumpster fire, it doesn't mean that applying never works or that it's a terrible strategy for everyone.

Online applications can work, and they have worked for many of my clients.

You'll have the most success with online applications if you:

- Are targeting exactly what you've done before or a very logical next step
- Have specialized experience or expertise
- Are targeting in-demand roles, especially those with lower supply than demand
- Have personal brand assets positioned exactly for the target role
- Apply fairly quickly after the job posting goes live

If you don't check most of these boxes, online applications probably aren't your best path forward.

Focus your energy on strategies that actually match your situation, whether that's targeted networking, working with specialized recruiters, or leveraging internal referrals.

The key is using the right strategy for your unique search, not just the loudest one on the internet.

The last couple of roles you've had were fine. Not bad… just not quite the right fit.

In your next career move, you know you "want to get it right."

So many of my mid-career clients feel this way. Like there's a lot riding on their next move.

- They want to set themselves up for the next stage of their career.
- If they're going to pivot, they want to do it intentionally.
- They want to finally feel like they're making meaningful impact AND feeling fulfilled.
- They want to set the stage for stepping into fractional or consulting work down the road.

Knowing how to proceed feels insurmountable.

Here's what I tell them: It's not!

But it does require actually stopping. Taking the time to reflect and clarify exactly where you want to go and why -- before updating your resume or reaching out to your network.

Most people skip this step. Not because they don't know it matters, but because they don't know where to begin. Or it feels too big to tackle alongside everything else they're managing.

One of the most valuable discoveries my clients make during pressure testing: the target they thought they wanted isn't actually the right one.

This happens because most people build their target based on what seems logical on paper, not what actually aligns with how they want to work, lead, and spend their days.

When I work with clients navigating a job search, the first three stages of the process are:

1. Clarifying their ideal target
2. Pressure testing their path (through strategic conversations that reveal whether this target actually fits)
3. Polishing their personal brand

The stages are in this order for a reason.

You need to refine the right path before you exert additional energy, time, resources, and mental capacity on it.

Jumping into the latter stages of the process where you're aggressively networking, applying, or interviewing is draining physically and emotionally.

You only want to exert that level of effort on the right things.

Too often, clients come to me after they've been focused on the latter stages, burning themselves out without any return on that investment. They've spent months networking and applying for roles that were never quite right.

When I work with clients, we set up for success from the start. That means spending the right amount of time testing your hypothesis and assumptions on the front end.

Before you send another application or schedule another coffee chat, ask yourself: have I actually pressure tested this path?

If you're in the midst of a job search, make sure you haven't skipped these steps. And if you're about to launch a job search, give yourself adequate time to explore these areas without pressure.

It's the best way to lead an efficient search AND land your ideal opportunity.
