Want to know how long your job search will actually take? Here are the benchmarks I see with senior-level searches:

2 months: You're targeting exactly what you've done before. You have a strong network, proven results in a high-demand role, and your interview skills are sharp. You have connections that are ready and willing to open doors for you.

4 months: You're targeting the same role or something close to it. You have strong networking skills and your personal brand is dialed in. You're working aggressively to get in front of the right opportunities.

6 months: You're making a moderate career shift. Or you're moving more slowly or deliberately. Or you're targeting highly competitive roles in fields that are contracting. Or you have gaps in your approach that are creating friction.

12+ months: You're making a significant career pivot—changing industry, function, and level simultaneously. Or you have major gaps in your strategy that aren't being addressed.

These are benchmarks based on what I see working with senior professionals, not guarantees. Your timeline depends on dozens of variables specific to your situation.

What matters most? Having realistic expectations so you can build the right action plan.

Eric Gong & Company

EG & Co. is a boutique retained search and RPO firm founded by a former VP of Engineering, Eric Gong. I was the 1st full-time employee and lead recruiter who was instrumental in building the company from scratch. During my time, our team of <5 employees generated $1.2 million and helped numerous startups scale their technical teams.

Recruiting Operations
•	Led full life-cycle recruiting efforts for 16 full-time placements equating to ~$730k in revenue
•	Provided training, guidance, and sourcing support on all other placements
•	Developed processes and trained clients to use best practices within their ATS’
•	Designed inclusive interview processes, rubrics, and sample questions for hiring teams

Lead Technical Recruiter

Apex Systems

As a technical recruiter at Apex Systems, my main focus was sourcing, screening, and hiring IT Infrastructure professionals in the Philadelphia and Harrisburg regions of Pennsylvania. I worked to develop relationships with IT Infrastructure specialists focused on Systems Administration, Systems Engineering, DevOps, and Cloud Architecture among others. I worked with hiring managers at Fortune 500 and midmarket companies to deliver the best technical talent to fit into their organization. 

This role really helped me to learn more about technology in general. I also learned some best practices to follow throughout the recruitment lifecycle from the perspective of hiring managers, recruiters, and candidates.

Some notes:
•	Achieved average contract value of $32,729 with 32.24% avg. gross margin (17.25% greater than 2019 Apex avg.)
•	Closed $556k of cumulative contract value with $282k in current cumulative spread in first full year
•	Leveraged sourcing strategies to develop a deep pipeline of IT infrastructure professionals in the Philadelphia area
•	Qualified requirements for open positions to meet the needs of hiring managers
•	Sourced and screened candidates to ensure they meet the unique specifications for each client’s needs
•	Monitored full lifecycle of recruitment from sourcing through contractor placement
•	Maintained relationships with placed contractors for the duration of contract and beyond
•	Negotiated contract terms with hiring managers, candidates, and third-party vendors
•	Voted Rookie of the Year for 2019 in the Philadelphia Office
