After several of years working directly with students, I pivoted to a Director Level at the intersection of faculty and students. I loved, once again, advising world-class faculty and playing an active role in shaping the impact an MBA program can have on student’s lives and careers. But, after reaching the top, I recognized that the industry was no longer meeting my top values and I needed a shift out.

Stepping into this role it was evident to me right away that I was on a sinking ship, so I let my boss know my plan to right the ship with the best team possible and fix the leaks, and then I’d be planning my exit out. 

I led a strategic charge to create the biggest impact I could, by hiring and promoting an all-star team, overhauling broken systems, processes, and infrastructure, and advocating for the first successful allocation of resources in a decade, as well as leading the charge to hire my replacement for a seamless transition out.

What I learned is that it’s hard as hell to manage a stressful role, take care of your well-being, and take the steps to navigate a career transition, but it’s possible with a strong toolkit of career development skills and a clear roadmap of necessary steps.

I was super excited to land the exact role I was targeting: one with a split-focus on improving program operations and in developing/refreshing career management curriculum to improve coaching outcomes.

I took this role as an opportunity to start building my career coaching skills and test coaching as a viable career path. I sat on the other side of the table from individuals who would tell me, "I have nothing to offer," when I was looking at a resume that said something very different!

I knew then that I wanted to be able to make a bigger impact for these individuals and that it was going to take going deeper than just basic communication skills to get to the root of the issue.

Prior to my higher-education career, I had an entirely different career comprised of various management roles across a wide variety of industries from retail, to hospitality, to real estate, to food and beverage, and law. 

I loved being able to come into an organization (or help build one from the ground up) and improve operations, business processes, and employee development programs, as well as directly interact with customers to improve the customer experience.

Some of the greatest management lessons in my career were in these early days of learning and growing on the job, it was a steep learning curve that I enjoyed and have been able to now refine over my career.

Like many recruiters, I started my career on a whim. After 6 years in hospitality sales and catering I was ready for a change and when my friend called and told me about a role in her company's talent team I figured there was nothing to lose. 

After a few weeks of training and learning about technology (I was a tech recruiter back then which was ironic because I couldn't do much on my computer besides type - it was the late 90s!) and how the company searched for and found potential candidates I was off. In a great stroke of luck I had some amazing colleagues who took me under their wing and taught me the ins and outs of cold calling, interviewing and even letting people down easy when they weren't a fit. Those colleagues were even gracious when I outpaced them as a top recruiter for our international firm within a year. 

Recruiting was second-nature for me - as someone who has moved more than 35 times (not military either) I had an innate sense of listening into the conversation to really connect. Connecting quickly and building community has been my guiding force since childhood (ask any adoptee and they'll likely tell you a similar story) and it suits me well in recruiting. 

The best part about recruiting is helping good people, find good work - that makes them happy. There's more to life than work and most of us HAVE to work to keep the lights on, food in our bellies and warm clothes on our backs - and that's where I come in. 

Over the years I've learned a number of lessons about solvency (I get more into that with my community at ZenCareer Nation) and being able to follow my core value of connecting and serving. 

Helping you find a job that not only pays your bills but gives you a sense of accomplishment, connection, growth and whatever else you value is my focus with my one-to-one coaching. I know that most coaches are EXPENSIVE and some are really good at making you feel like you're missing out if you don't go into debt to work with them. (I was taught that methodology in the early 2000s too). 

That's not my MO. With multiple streams of income I serve best by providing coaching on a sliding scale for job seekers - you pick what works between $45.00 - $150 for a session and I provide you insider tips and concrete steps to move from un-employed/under-employed/unhappily employed to working in a role you love.
