I’m Jim.

I write about personal growth, self development, and strategies for lifestyle design from the intersection of lawyering and entrepreneurship.

Inspired by the Silicon Beach startup ecosystem, in 2016 I co-founded a telehealth startup helping our doctors' patients transform into healthier, happier people through 1-1 coaching and online courses on self development.

Recognize the things that send your brain into overdrive. Whether it's a future event, emotional overload, or a helpless feeling, become conscious of it quickly. Knowing what pushes your buttons allows you to prepare and plan coping mechanisms.

When anxiety rises, pause and take deep breaths. Let the oxygen calm your body and mind. Step outside for a quick walk if needed. This simple act helps you detach from the bad experience.


3. Label your emotions

4. Focus on what you can control

Find something to be grateful for... can be anything. Gratitude shifts your focus from what's lacking to what you have, taking you from emotional struggle to emotional stability.

1. Mind wandering

Mind wandering is mental multitasking, causing your thoughts to drift. Constant distractions create a cognitive overload, draining your mental energy. Stay focused on the present to conserve energy and extend your productivity.


2. Reacting to problems

Always reacting to problems is mentally draining. Instead, be proactive. Identify potential issues and address them before they become problems.


3. Talking more than acting

1. Spend time alone daily.

Block time each day to disconnect from external noise.


2. Limit distractions
  
Shut out social media and constant notifications. Create mental space to think clearly without constant electronic alerts and nudges.


3. Take a walk

Common advice that's commonly ignored. A walk (especially in nature) is the easiest way to get physically active and clear your mind.


4. Focus on the present

Pay attention to your current activities. Whether you're eating, working, or resting, fully engage with the task at hand. Don't think about the future. Don't think about the past. Just focus on what's happening now.


5. Set boundaries
  
Guard your mental space intentionally by setting boundaries with people and activities that drain your energy. Prioritize what matters to you and let go of the rest.


6. Do what you want
  
Reconnect with doing things that you enjoy and thrive on doing without constantly burdening yourself with obligations to others. Get selfish. It's okay. You'll recharge and will be a better person to those around you in the long run.

You've set a goal... And you've come up short...

Here's how to stay in the game with one critical mindset:

Be patient with your timing.

Sometimes setbacks, or slow growth, are caused by inconvenient timing and nothing more.

The mindset you need to adopt when your timing is off is to be patient with yourself and your circumstances, and let your opportunity come.

I tasted making money online with a telehealth website, with most of the money on that business coming in from 2019 through 2022.

And to my surprise, we made money pretty fast... once I figured out how a sales funnel worked, and that we didn't need to spend a bunch on a developer but instead could use simple no-code tools.

So in 2023 I entered the creator economy, hoping to replicate quick growth.

And I'm gonna be straight, my growth has been kinda flat.

I started with posting content about lawyering and advanced litigation techniques.

Made sense... I've been a litigation lawyer for almost 30 years and I had just finished recording a lawyer coaching course that needed promoting.

But I didn't like it as much. I was more into posting content about personal growth and self-development.

Our telehealth site was built around combining medication-assisted treatment for folks drinking too much with... you guessed it... self-help content.

So I switched niches on LinkedIn in 2023 and started writing about personal growth. I figured I'd eventually repurpose the lawyer content anyway onto a different platform, like YouTube, and revamp my lawyer course product offering later.

And I figured out how to get followers... if I got intentional about it.

But here's the thing. You can't be intentional about everything all at the same time.

And that brings us back to timing.

Sometimes you need to recognize that if you're intentional about too many things all at once, you'll dilute your output and set yourself up for burnout.

In the last few years, I wrapped up a telehealth site, recorded an in-depth lawyer coaching course, sold a house, got married, bought a house, had a son, and took a full-time job at a litigation law firm, which is a faster-paced environment than when I had my own law practice.

And these things have required intent and focus.

So when I see my LinkedIn followers grow at, we'll say a modest rate, I'm okay with it.

Why? Because the timing isn't quite right.

Am I gonna give up? Heck no.

Am I gonna go easy on myself and be patient, and let some of these other areas of my life loosen up and settle in? Yep.

As I used to coach our doctors' patients, you are your own best friend.

Go easy on yourself. Be patient. Your time will come.

Before starting a challenge, engage in some positive self-talk. Doing so sets the tone for confidence and purpose. Remind yourself of your strengths and capabilities.

Identify and confront your fears. Fear is natural. Accept it. It only becomes an obstacle when it paralyzes you. Understand that fear is not inherently negative. It motivates and prepares us for challenges.

3 steps to master productivity:


There's a limit on what you can do in a single day.

At least competently.

Throughout my career as a lawyer I've noticed a clear correlation.

The more I try to do in a shorter period of time, the more the quality of my work product suffers.

Small mistakes emerge.

The polish on my final product loses its shine and becomes smudged.

Here's what to do instead:

1. Use focused blocks. Limit your work to 2 or 3 hour blocks on a single task. This practice stops your brain from wasting energy on constant task transitions.


Each switch incurs a cognitive penalty, and you have to reboot your brain to download the context surrounding the task.

Focused blocks avoid frequent mental transitions and promote deep work.

They enhance your concentration and improve the quality of your end work product.


2. Reduce daily priorities

If you can, set a maximum of 3 priorities each day. This approach prevents you from overloading your schedule and stepping into counterproductive territory.

Stop saying yes to every assignment.

Don't be afraid to turn away potential clients.

With fewer priorities, your focus sharpens, and you give each task the attention it deserves.


3. Segment your day

Dedicate specific parts of your day to distinct activities, often called "chunking".

In the context of productivity, "chunking" refers to the practice of breaking up the workday into distinct, manageable segments or chunks of time dedicated to specific tasks or types of work.

For example, you can dedicate the first two hours of your workday solely to deep work, then chunk email responses and meetings into later, more fragmented parts of the day.

How I maximize productivity by running downhill:

In the pursuit of success, grinding uphill isn't always the answer. It's about finding where the energy naturally flows and leveraging that momentum.

Instead of constantly pushing against resistance, align your efforts with areas where progress feels effortless. This approach not only boosts productivity but also enhances job satisfaction.

For instance, rather than forcing yourself to master skills that don't come naturally, focus on your strengths.

How to keep yourself from spinning out of control...

No, it's not cutting back on hours at work, though that can help.

Or learning to say "no" to people more often without feeling guilty.

I'm talking about managing your locus of control.

Locus of control is your perception of what influences the events in your life.

It's the belief about whether the outcomes of your actions are contingent on your efforts (internal control) or on external factors (external control).

Your mission is to build a strong internal locus of control.

Start by looking at your beliefs about control.

Ask, do you attribute your successes and failures to your efforts?

Or do you routinely link outcomes to external factors, like fate or luck?

Shift your thinking to believing that your actions directly impact outcomes.

Build evidence you can point to by setting small goals you know you can achieve, and then acknowledge your role in achieving them.

Repeat the process with slightly more ambitious goals and build a repository of evidence directly linking your effort to your planned outcomes.

This leads to self-efficacy ... belief in your ability to handle situations, tackle challenges, and zero in on what you want to accomplish.

People with high self-efficacy make things happen.

They climb to greater levels in life.

When you have high self-efficacy, you have trust in yourself and in your abilities.

And that internal sense of trust, or internal locus of control, starts to reliably produce a feedback loop of effort and tangible, positive outcomes.

The evidence becomes overwhelming that when you put your mind to something you will achieve it.

And that's how you keep yourself from spinning out of control.

Human wants and needs are insatiable.

This speaks to the hedonic treadmill.

It describes the tendency of humans to quickly return to a stable level of happiness despite major positive events or life changes.

"Jim, are you saying we always return to some form of baseline happiness we're born with? And can never become happier people?"

No, I'm not saying that.

But the science shows we have a tendency to return to a baseline of happiness that evolved in our lives at some point.

So how do we grow sustained happiness?

Here's how in 9 ways:

1. Practice gratitude. It will shift your focus from what is lacking to what is already present.


2. Invest in experiences rather than material goods. Experiences provide lasting memories and strengthen your social connections.


3. Manage expectations by avoiding the pursuit of constant highs. Accept natural fluctuations in your mood.

Notice negative emotions but don't engage with them. Instead, let them pass by.


4. Build relationships

Tons of studies prove it time and again. Nurturing relationships with family, friends, and your community will provide a reliable source of happiness.


5. Do things that have meaning for you

Align what you do with your personal values and interests. That will produce a sense of purpose and fulfillment ... potent for overall well-being.


6. Avoid being sedentary

We sit way too long and don't move enough. Being sedentary is a Western culture disease. Avoid it like you would smoking ... it's equally destructive.


7. Personal growth

Keep discovering new information and new angles on solving old problems. 

Personal development leads to a sense of progress and accomplishment. 

Setting and achieving personal goals, however small, provides ongoing satisfaction.


8. Limit comparisons

Avoid constant comparison to others. If you keep it up you'll feed feelings of inadequacy or envy.


9. Balance hedonic and eudaimonic happiness

Hedonic happiness focuses on pleasure and immediate gratification.

Eudaimonic happiness comes from pursuing meaning and purpose.

Striking a balance between the two will expand your sense of well-being.

Apply just a handful of the 9 strategies to get off the hedonic treadmill, grow your happiness in ways you've not imagined, and watch your old "baseline" of happiness evaporate.

Mirroring ... a simple yet potent technique for building rapport and connection with people. Here's how in 5 steps.


1. Listen with intent

Focus entirely on the speaker's words. Avoid planning your next response. Genuine listening builds trust. Others can tell when you're not listening but, instead, preparing what to say (subtle body language gives you away).


2. Identify key phrases

Select the last two or three important words from the speaker. These words hold the essence of their message.
