One of the best life lessons LinkedIn taught me
didn’t come from a post.
It came from people.

I get a lot of messages every day.
So do others.

I know for a fact that
I’m not the only one selling.
I’m not the only one pitching.

You reach out with respect.

Your heart rate goes up.

If I were starting from zero today,
I would do the opposite.

I would slow down.

Here’s what I’d focus on instead.

1. I’d pick one person.
2. Not a market.
3. Not an industry.
4. One real human.

Someone with:

1. one clear problem
2. one clear confusion
3. one clear goal

Then I’d write only for them.

Not to teach.
Not to impress.
But to say:

“I see you.”

Even if nobody liked the post.
Even if nobody commented.

Because relevance works quietly
before it works loudly.

Next, I wouldn’t ask:
“How do I grow my audience?”

I’d ask:
“Who should I talk to today?”

1. I’d spend time:
2. reading comments
3. replying slowly
4. sending respectful DMs
5. asking better questions

No pitch.
No rush.

Just presence.

I learned this after spending years that:

Authority is built before attention.
Attention just makes it visible.

When you start from zero,
you don’t need momentum.

You need clarity.

- Clarity creates confidence.
- Confidence creates trust.
- Trust creates outcomes.

That’s the order.

And yes
this is exactly what I ask clients to do first.

Not hacks.
Not tricks.
Not volume.

Just focus.
Human focus.

Pattern #1: What they post (or complain about)

Your ICP tells you their problems publicly.

- Missed targets.
- Hiring struggles.
- Low reply rates.
- Scaling issues.
- Burnout posts disguised as “lessons.”

If someone is posting about a problem…
They’re actively aware of it.

Awareness = timing.

That’s not a cold lead.
That’s a warm signal.

Pattern #2: When they show up

People don’t engage randomly.

Sales leaders show up:

- End of quarter
- After a miss
- During hiring phases

Founders show up:

- After funding
- During pivots
- When growth stalls

SDRs show up:

- When quota pressure hits
- When tools stop working
- Timing tells you more than titles ever will.

Pattern #3: Who they engage with

This one is overlooked.

Your ICP comments on:

- People they respect
- Posts that hit close to home
- Content they wish they had written
- Go to their comments.

That’s their mindset trail.

If you understand who they listen to,
you understand how to talk to them.

Pattern #4: The questions they ask (or avoid)

Some people ask directly.
Some hint indirectly.

“Anyone else struggling with…”
“Curious how others are handling…”
“Is it just me or…”

Those are buying signals without the buying language.

Sales doesn’t start with a pitch.
It starts with recognition.

Here’s the part most people mess up

They spot the pattern…
and immediately pitch.

That kills everything.

The real move is this:

Acknowledge the pattern
Start a conversation
Stay human
Let relevance do the work

When someone feels seen,
selling becomes easy.

If LinkedIn isn’t working for you, ask yourself:

- Am I posting, or am I listening?
- Am I sending messages, or reading behavior?
- Am I chasing leads, or recognizing patterns?

Because the best outbound doesn’t feel outbound at all.

It feels like:

I stopped chasing frequency
and started focusing on relevance.

I stopped trying to impress the algorithm
and started trying to understand people.

More conversations.
Fewer broadcasts.

Talking to ICPs.
Talking to people a step ahead of me.
Talking to people who don’t buy today
but teach me something tomorrow.

Because here’s the truth:

A big network doesn’t build a business.
A real network does.

Connections don’t need to buy from you
to be valuable.

Some become clients.
Some become collaborators.
Some just become people you learn from.

And that compounds.

I also learned this:

Posting is only one lever.
DMs, comments, and genuine conversations
do most of the heavy lifting.

When people feel seen, heard, and respected,
business becomes natural.

No pressure.
No scripts.
No pretending.

So if you’re not posting daily, good enough.
Focus on posting usefully.

Focus on building trust.
Focus on conversations that matter.
Focus on people, not vanity metrics.

That’s how you build an audience.
That’s how you build a business.
Quietly. Consistently. Intentionally.

That changed everything for me in early 2026.

Here’s what I started doing differently:

I posted less, but with more intention.
I wrote posts that invited replies, not applause.
I paid attention to who engaged, not how many.

And then I did the most important thing:

I moved to DMs the right way.

Just starting conversations.
Simple messages like:

1. What made this post resonate with you?
2. Curious, are you building something around this?
3. Glad this helped. What are you focused on right now?

No scripts.
No pressure.

And something interesting happened…

Even with less content, I started getting:

More DMs
More meaningful conversations
More inbound interest
Better business outcomes

That’s when it clicked:

Your audience is not there to be impressed.
They’re there to be understood.
