Most conversations in boardrooms are still about the business.

Revenue. Customer experience. Productivity gains. Copilots for everyone.

But last week, at a Microland dinner on autonomous IT operations, the energy in the room was somewhere else entirely.

The IT leaders were not animated about AI in the business.
They were animated about AI in IT itself.

That distinction is more important than it sounds.

Because the organisations that embed intelligence into the engine room, not just the front office, will quietly reshape their cost base, resilience, and credibility over the next 12 to 24 months.

Two themes dominated the discussion.

First, autonomy over automation.

Most enterprises have automated heavily over the past decade. Scripts, workflows, orchestration layers. Yet the operating reality for many CIOs still looks like this:

Too many alerts.
Too many tools.
Too much noise.
Too much dependency on key individuals.

What leaders are now exploring is different. Not just automation, but systems that interpret signals, correlate patterns, recommend actions, and in defined scenarios execute remediation.

This is where the real tension sits.

The hesitation is rarely technical. It is accountability. I have seen this play out more than once. The question is not whether AI can act. The question is whether the CIO is willing to own the consequence if it acts incorrectly at speed.

That is a different level of risk.

Second, cyber as an AI battlefield.

The most animated conversations were not about dashboards or compliance metrics. They were about defence under pressure.

Attackers are already using AI. Defensive teams cannot remain manual, fragmented, and overloaded.

What many leaders are looking for is AI that can:

• detect patterns humans miss
• connect weak signals across siloed systems
• prioritise response based on actual risk
• reduce the fatigue that weakens judgement over time

This is not about replacing analysts. It is about protecting them, and protecting the organisation from delay.

Underneath both themes sits a deeper issue: credibility.

When outages occur or cyber incidents escalate, nobody asks how advanced your tooling is. They ask why it was not prevented, or at least anticipated.

Autonomy in operations and AI-assisted cyber defence are not innovation experiments. They are credibility strategies.

The next wave of competitive advantage may not come from visible AI in the business.

It may come from invisible intelligence inside IT.

A Calm Evening, A Powerful Conversation, And A Bold Vision For The UK by the UK Minister for AI

Last week, while more than 250,000 people gathered in New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit, I was at a very different setting.

It was a calm, bright evening by the poolside at an iconic hotel in Bengaluru. 
No large conference halls. No flashing screens. Just a small group of business leaders from across the IT sector gathered around a table with UK diplomats for an intimate roundtable discussion on the future of AI and technology in the UK.

We had the privilege of engaging directly with the UK Minister for AI, Kanishka Narayan MP, alongside Chandru Iyer, British Deputy High Commissioner for Karnataka and Deputy Trade Commissioner, Dr Nicolas Gribbit, First Secretary Trade India, and Sophia NB, Director of the Science and Technology Network.

For ninety minutes, the discussion was open, candid and forward looking.

The theme was simple yet powerful: how can business and government work together to position the UK at the centre of the next AI revolution?

The Minister spoke about bold investment plans, accelerating innovation, and creating the right policy and commercial environment to attract serious builders and long term capital. There was a clear intent to ensure the UK does not simply adopt AI, but shapes its global trajectory.

Equally encouraging was the openness in the room. There was a genuine invitation to industry to step forward with ideas. To experiment responsibly. To propose new models. To co create solutions that strengthen both the public and private sectors.

Too often, conversations between business and government can feel formal and distant. This one felt different. Collaborative. Practical. Action oriented.

The setting may have been serene, but the vision discussed was bold.

The opportunity now is to turn that vision into action.
