Today’s workforce is rewriting the rules and leaders  that listen will lead in true  senses.

It was wonderful sharing my thoughts on this topic at HR FEDERATION OF INDIA (HRFI) seminar held recently.

Here are the key takeaways :

1. Clarity and purpose matter. Employees are looking for meaning in their work, not just roles and responsibilities.

2. Growth is non-negotiable. Continuous learning, cross-functional exposure, and future-ready skills are now baseline expectations.

3. Respect and autonomy drive retention. People stay where they feel trusted, heard, and treated with dignity.

4. Managers need a reset. Coaching skills, emotional intelligence, and fairness matter more than hierarchy or control.

5. Flexibility is now a value system. Organisations that balance performance with humanity will attract and keep top talent.

6. Culture is becoming the real differentiator. Policies can be copied; culture cannot.

The future belongs to workplaces that can blend accountability with empathy, and ambition with wellbeing. 

Employees are ready for this shift. Employers who recognise this early will lead the next decade of progress.

Through our CSR partnership with Salaam Bombay Foundation, we are supporting young people from urban slums in earning their certification as fitness trainers from Gold's Gym  

Together we are trying to create  a pathway to stable income, confidence, and a profession they can build a future on.

By helping them develop a marketable skill in a growing industry, we are enabling access to sustainable livelihood opportunities and expanding their horizon of choices.

Seeing their progress and knowing it contributes to a stronger, more confident future brings a deep sense of satisfaction.

1. Men shouldn’t ask for help or direction

2. Men must always be strong, composed, and in control

3. Men shouldn’t show emotion, vulnerability, or doubt

4. Men must be primary providers, no matter the situation

5. Men who express feelings risk being labelled as weak

6. Men shouldn’t take paternity leave or extended family time

7. Men must solve everything on their own

8. Men are expected to absorb stress quietly

9. Men who seek support are told to “man up”

10. Men are assumed to take risks even when they prefer security

These assumptions create silent pressure and discourage men from sharing concerns or seeking support. This must change.

Feeling tired all the time?It may not be the workload.

It could be the constant pressure to prove your worth.

Trying to be seen, heard, and validated, every single day is exhausting.

When people don’t feel trusted, they stay on high alert.

That’s how burnout begins.

Here is what managers can do : 

1. Acknowledge effort, not just outcomes.
People feel seen when the journey is valued not just the result.

2. Create psychological safety.
Make it okay to say “I don’t know” or I need help.

3. Set clear expectations.
Ambiguity leads people to overcompensate and burn out.

4. Offer feedback proactively.
Don’t make people guess where they stand.

5. Reward authenticity, not just performance.

When people are accepted as they are, they stop performing to belong and create better outcomes.
