I watched a woman cry in my DMs last night.

Not sad tears. Rage tears.

"I just found out Brad got a $47K raise. I got 2.8%. We have the same title."

I asked when she submitted her documentation to her manager.

"January. Right before my review."

I sent her one line back: "The budget locked in October."

She didn't know. Nobody told her.

I already knew. But I let him finish.

The Smithsonian is spectacular. Sobering. Humbling.

I left with pride at how much we've overcome.
Sadness about what we had to endure.
Defeat about how far we still have to go.

And a 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 to lead the fight for economic justice.

Because the extraction didn't stop.
It just got a DEI budget and a LinkedIn post.

Every single one had the same phrase: "Demonstrates strong collaboration skills."

Translation: She does executive-level work at analyst prices.

"Strong execution" → Delivers $2M in value, receives $4K in recognition

I was accidentally copied on an email I wasn't supposed to see.

One line told me everything.

"The board is uncomfortable with going with someone so different from our other vendors."

Different.

That was the word. Not unqualified. Not inexperienced. 𝘋𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵.

Six-figure contract. I had the track record. Letters of recommendation from companies bigger than theirs. Proof of success they couldn't argue with.

Still wasn't enough.

A process that should've taken 6 weeks took 15 months.

Board presentation they never asked Brad for.
References they never asked Brad for.
A "trial period to feel each other out" they never asked Brad for.

15 months of hoops. They decided on Brad in 3 weeks.

I told them: I don't do free trials. You don't ask auditors, surgeons, or investment managers to "feel it out." You review the record. Then you decide.

They signed anyway. Eventually.

Today? They're my biggest client.

The board that was "uncomfortable" now writes the checks. On my terms.

It's a shame I had to go through 15 months of hoops to prove what my track record already showed. You shouldn't have to.

I performed an autopsy on my corporate career last weekend.

Cause of death: Uncompensated framework extraction.

Time of death: Somewhere between my third “exceeds expectations” and my first “we don’t have budget.”

I pulled every performance review.
Every project summary.
Every “great job” email.

Laid them out on my dining room table like evidence.

Then I did what nobody teaches you to do while you’re still employed:

I calculated the body count.

Autopsy Report

Frameworks built: 14
Frameworks credited: 2
Frameworks still running: 11
Frameworks generating revenue for others: 9

Total documented value created: $12.7M
Total compensation received: $847K (over 12 years)
Extraction rate: 93%

I didn’t have a career.

I had a donor organ situation.

They took my kidneys and called it teamwork.
Harvested my liver and called it collaboration.
Extracted my heart and called it culture fit.

But here’s what the autopsy revealed:

The organs are still viable.

Those 9 frameworks generating revenue? Recoverable.
Those 11 systems still running? Licensable.
That 93% extraction rate? Correctable.

Which means this wasn’t a tragedy.

It was a misclassification event.

Read this carefully:

If you can point to:
	• frameworks still being used after you left
	• systems people reference but no longer attribute
	•”thought leadership” that originated in your head and now lives in decks without your name

your career is not dead.

It’s been harvested without a license.

What correction actually looks like

Correction is not confrontation.
Correction is not bitterness.
Correction is documentation, ownership, and terms.

The missing system is a 15-minute Friday ritual.

Not reflection.
Not journaling.

Documentation.

Most Black women don't lose negotiations because they lack leverage.
They lose because their leverage is scattered across emails, decks, Slack threads, and meetings that were never consolidated into proof.

Power systems don't reward memory.
They reward records.

When you arrive at a compensation discussion with only recall, you negotiate from narrative.
When you arrive with artifacts, timestamps, outcomes, and attribution language, you negotiate from evidence.

That difference determines whether your work is debated or priced.

They called me a vendor.
I used to run their department.

Sat in a conference room I'd furnished. Across from people I'd hired. Listening to a director—who'd been an analyst when I left—explain "the strategy" to me.

My strategy.

My first instinct was to correct him.
My second was to invoice him.

This isn't disrespect.
It's a governance protocol.

Organizations downgrade authority they no longer own.
The label "vendor" is an internal risk control.

Once you're off payroll, your judgment is treated as input, not direction.
Not because you're wrong.
Because they can't manage you.

The reflex is to compensate.
To over-explain your credentials before anyone asks.
To CC people who already know your track record.
To soften your recommendations so the room feels safe again.

That impulse is expensive.

Any system that needs you agreeable is not prepared for you powerful.

Power returns the moment dependency becomes visible.

When deadlines slip without you.
When decisions bottleneck at your sign-off.
When outcomes trace back to your standards—not theirs.

At that point, titles are irrelevant.
Flow is the authority.

Inside institutions, power is granted.
Outside institutions, power is enforced by consequence.

One requires permission.
The other requires proof.

If this phase feels colder, good.
You've exited permission-based power.

The question isn't whether they'll respect you again.

It's whether you'll charge them correctly when they do.

For years, it lived in meetings and decks with no author line.
Passed around as instinct. Absorbed without a receipt.

"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵."

That language isn't neutral.
It's how extraction stays clean.

Because the moment something is framed as personality instead of process, it becomes unownable. Unprotectable. Unpaid.

So I did the opposite.

Named it. Documented it. Trademarked it.

Now it's not "how she does things."
It's licensed intellectual property.

Same thinking. Different legal posture.

The value didn't magically appear when I trademarked it.
The value was always there.
What changed was 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗶𝘁.

If your highest-impact work is still described as:
– "tribal knowledge"
– "institutional memory"
– "natural talent"

You're not underperforming.
You're under-protected.

Results without ownership are donations.
And I don't donate to companies anymore.
