"Can you walk me through your salary expectations?"

I slid my number across the table. $127K.

The hiring manager's eyebrows shot up. "That's... ambitious for someone with your background."

My background: 8 years building revenue systems. $14M in documented value creation. Three frameworks running at my previous company.

"We were thinking more like $85K," he said. "But there's room to grow."

I folded. Took $92K. Convinced myself the title mattered more than the math.

Six months later, I'm training the new guy they hired. His starting salary? $135K. His experience? Five years. His documented wins? "Strong potential."

Same role. Same team. Same hiring manager.
Different invoice.

That failed negotiation? Cost me $35K annually. $175K over five years. Before compound interest. Before opportunity cost. Before the mental tax of watching Brad make more for less.

To every Black woman about to negotiate:

Your number isn't ambitious. Their offer is extraction.

The pastor's jaw dropped. "But we're doing God's work."

"So am I," I said. "And God's work deserves proper funding."

See, they'd been running community programs for 15 years. Free financial literacy. Free job training. Free business coaching. All led by Black women who tithed, served, and subsidized.

The youth minister was teaching coding bootcamps after her 9-to-5.
The deacon's wife ran entrepreneurship workshops on Saturdays.
Sister Johnson's grant-writing saved them $2M.

All for "the glory."
None for the invoice.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡:

The coding bootcamp they gave away? Worth $5K per student.
The entrepreneurship program? Corporations pay $25K for that.
Sister Johnson's grant expertise? Consultants charge $10K per proposal.

They were sitting on $500K in annual program revenue.
Giving it away while Black women burned out.
Calling it ministry while we subsidized their mission.

I didn't just invoice them. I taught them to invoice everyone else.

Started charging corporations for diversity training they'd been doing free.
Created certification programs that companies paid to send employees to.
Turned "community service" into community revenue.

Six months later:
• $500K in program fees generated
• 12 Black women instructors now paid $150/hour
• Zero burnout, maximum impact

The pastor called it a miracle.

I called it pricing our gifts properly.

Because even in sacred spaces, Black women's contributions have value. Our expertise doesn't become free because we're in the sanctuary. Our brilliance doesn't get discounted at the church door.

That $10K invoice? It was for the framework that generated the $500K.

They paid it. In full. On time.

Because transformation costs. Whether it's in boardrooms or church basements.

To every Black woman giving away her genius for "the cause":

Your cause needs funding.
Your gifts deserve compensation.
Your service has a price tag.

Even Jesus said the worker deserves their wages.

Start invoicing. Even your church.
Especially your church.

Because we can't pour from empty cups.
But we can invoice for the pitcher.

I'm the recently retired MD of Executive Sales Coaching Aust - now I only work with one or two clients at a time. 

I've been a guest on dozens of sales podcasts, written many articles on Selling at C level for Top Sales Magazine & other publications, developed & ran sales training programs & coached many salespeople & sales leaders. I've won a few awards for this.

More importantly I've actually sold lots of stuff to lots of different companies in lots of industries - over $100 million in total. My biggest sale was €5 million for an ERP system to Pearson Education Europe. 

I've sold goods & services in over 20 countries on every continent. I've been successful as a BDM, an Account Manager, a National Sales Manager, a Global Sales Manager & a Global Account Manager. 

Before I moved into sales I was a Project Manager, a Professional Services Manager then a Marketing Manager so I have a wide variety of practical business experience.

I've worked in & sold to a vast array of industries - ICT, telecomms, law, construction, warehousing & distribution, retail, health, banking & insurance, government, media, publishing, consumer electronics, training, agriculture, utilities & a few I can't remember.

I've also owned three small retail businesses with my wife & worked on the shop floor in many, many part time jobs.

IN SUMMARY I have an excellent understanding of customers, prospects & people in many industries at all levels from the shop floor to the boardroom - & what they care about. And I've been there and done that when it comes to selling, coaching and training. 

Of course this makes me pretty old but I'm up to date on current sales challenges including AI, how to use it effectively in sales & what to avoid.

From a theory perspective I’ve read hundreds of sales books. I’ve been on more than 50 sales, negotiation skills, leadership, communication, writing and other courses and I learned at least something from all of them - even the rubbish ones.

I’m connected through LinkedIn with many of the world’s leading sales coaches and sales leaders. I read their articles and share information with them. I also write my own articles – take a look because they tell you a lot about my philosophy.

Practically I’ve sold to senior executives in the FTSE 100, ASX 100, the NASDAQ, the Dow Jones and the S&P 500. As global sales and marketing director for an Australian ERP I’ve worked and sold in more than 30 countries in every continent – except Antarctica – and in a wide variety of industries.

People love stories. A compelling story, whether a novel, movie or corporate tale has a structure that informs, entertains and compels attention. 

The very best corporations – Apple, Virgin, Tesla – have a corporate narrative that strengthens their brand, helps command attention and helps them gain access to decision makers. They talk about customers, problems, solutions in a flowing narrative.

Every company has a story but sadly few tell it well. They talk about themselves, their products, features and benefits and guess what – outside their walls no-one cares.

I help my clients create a compelling narrative that will make people care and help them to sell more.
