In our industry, you do not need to be inseparable to be aligned.

You need shared values. 
Mutual admiration.
And the ability to pick up a conversation as if no time has passed.

Clinical research moves fast. Careers evolve. Titles change.
But good people remain.

And that matters more than we often say.

Valentine’s weekend was not just about roses for me.🌹 
It was about two hours precious hours with my eldest son, six weeks into his military service.

When your child steps into structure and service, something changes.
In them.
And in you.

As a single mother raising three independent young men, this may be the most meaningful leadership role I will ever hold.

Reading this, I could not help but think that this was not random. Sometimes we are placed exactly where we are meant to be, at the precise moment we are needed most.

#Milan I had just left a theater where we were filming a segment about science.
I found myself, with my taxi, stopped behind a derailed tram.

I asked the taxi driver to let me out, telling him I was a doctor.

I got out and saw a scene from a war.

I provided first aid and carried out triage together with a young plain-clothes police officer from Naples who was not on duty, and a young pharmacist, possibly of Russian origin. Chaos all around us.
Bodies torn in half and people who should never have died like that.

We assessed and assisted more than fifty people.
Emergency services arrived after a long time which felt eternity.

I have done hundreds of emergency rescues in my life on the road, but this was unprecedented.
For the first time, I felt what a war setting truly is.
The lucidity of the mind.
The adrenaline that sharpens your thoughts into crystal clarity.

Life is a mystery, and when something like this happens you ask yourself why the universe allows it and why you are exactly there.

The work of a medic is above all this:
being there in the middle of chaos,
acting immediately,
taking responsibility,
making decisions in seconds, hold an hand and remove the blood from eyes and faces, 

doing everything possible until help arrives.

That is the job.

Today, I am drained. I hope never again.
