Traditional methods like spreadsheets and sample audits often fall short, while manual e-billing reviews consume hours and still overlook critical patterns such as staffing pyramids, duplicate entries, or non-compliant codes. As a result, legal departments often accept variability that is difficult to explain or defend.

Back-office automation utilizing Generative AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and agentic orchestration can significantly improve outcomes. Instead of relying on “spot checks,” an agentic stack can ingest LEDES and PDF invoices, extract and normalize line items, retrieve billing guidelines via RAG, and flag exceptions with citations to the specific clauses. This approach allows reviewers to understand the rationale behind each suggested adjustment, while matter leads receive dashboards that highlight staffing mix, blended rates, and alternative fee performance. With every step logged, finance and audit teams finally gain a reliable trail.
