When I was 21, I ran my first Full Marathon (41.2 Kms). Not metaphorically—I literally covered my first and longest run in my life.

While I was running, I thought about quitting approximately 5,000 times. (And that’s a lowball estimate.) But despite the high-density sunlight, less practice, mental and physical fatigue, and healthy snacks overdose, I kept going. I’m that person. Once I say I’ll do something, it will happen.

Now, I put that perseverance to work—managing digital marketing and product portfolio across corporate, start-up, and freelancing environments, while also being deeply involved in digital marketing training programs and strategic growth initiatives for product. I don’t have to climb any mountains…but I do have to move them as a Growth Hacker.

That’s what Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta are expected to spend combined on capex in 2026 — roughly the size of Sweden’s GDP.

Data centers. GPUs. Custom silicon. AI infrastructure.

And then there’s Apple.

While hyperscalers are in an AI arms race, Apple’s capital expenditures fell 17% last quarter.

At first glance, it looks like Apple is falling behind.

But look closer — this may be one of the most calculated strategic bets in tech right now.

🧠 The AI Arms Race: Brains vs Distribution

👉 Microsoft is integrating OpenAI into productivity workflows.
👉Google is pushing Gemini across Search, Workspace, Android.
👉Meta is open-sourcing Llama and scaling AI across social and hardware.

They’re building the brain.

Apple? It’s building the body.

Apple wants to own the distribution layer of AI, not necessarily the model layer.

Instead of spending tens of billions training frontier models, Apple signed a multi-year deal with Google to power Siri with Gemini — reportedly ~$1B per year.

That’s just 0.24% of Apple’s 2025 projected revenue.

Let that sink in.

While competitors burn $50B+ annually in AI capex, Apple is outsourcing the brain and preserving capital — maintaining industry-leading margins (~44%).

Classic Apple:
Control the interface
Control the hardware
Control the ecosystem
Let others compete on infrastructure

📉 The Strategic Bet: AI as a Commodity

Apple is betting on something big:

That frontier models will commoditize.

History supports this:
Cloud compute commoditized
Smartphone hardware margins compressed
LLM APIs are already seeing pricing pressure

If AI models become utilities, leverage shifts to:
Who controls the interface
Who controls the hardware
Who owns the ecosystem

Apple dominates all three.

⚠️ But There’s Real Risk

What if one company achieves a sustained 10x leap in reasoning or autonomy?

If that happens, power shifts to whoever owns the superior model.

Apple could become dependent on a supplier it can’t replace.

That’s not just technical risk — it’s strategic vulnerability.

🔮 The Bigger Question

Is AI the next cloud infrastructure cycle?

Or the next operating system?

If it’s infrastructure → Apple’s strategy looks brilliant.
If it’s the operating system → Apple may be underinvesting.

One thing is certain: This isn’t passivity.

It’s capital efficiency over capital intensity — ecosystem leverage over compute dominance.

And historically, distribution platforms often beat raw technology.

The next 3–5 years will decide whether Apple avoided the AI arms race…

Or sat out the most important platform shift of the century.

Sounds impressive… until you ask the only question that matters:

Would they choose you when it’s time to buy?

Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: Follower count is a distribution number. Brand strength is a trust + demand number.

The platform trends are screaming the same thing.

Algorithms reward depth, not breadth. LinkedIn looks at signals like how long users stay on posts and the quality of comments. It is also reducing the importance of clickbait and engagement bait. 

Organic engagement is getting harder, even as follower counts rise. Instagram engagement fell sharply in 2025. It dropped by around 24% from 2024. 

Even the best formats, like carousels, only average around 0.55% engagement. 

Brands are noticing an increase in inbound engagement. Sprout reports that average inbound engagements rose from 70% to 83% in 2024. 

The takeaway? The audience is there—but you have to earn attention. 

So if follower count is a weak proxy… what actually signals brand strength?

Brand strength looks like this (even with a “smaller” audience).

1) Trust that competes with price and quality

In Edelman’s 2025 research, trust is key in buying decisions. For example, 80% of people say, “I trust the company that owns the brand” is important or a deal breaker.

And 80% say they trust the brands they use to “do what is right.”

That’s brand strength. Not applause. Not vanity metrics. Trust.

2) Conversation density, not follower volume

A brand with 8,000 followers and 120 meaningful comments can be stronger than one with 80,000 followers and no engagement at all.

Because silence means:
👉 Low relevance
👉 Low memory
👉 Low persuasion

And the feed knows it.

3) Demand signals outside social

Real brands create pull:
👉 Branded searches
👉 Direct traffic
👉 Repeat purchases
👉 Referrals - “Heard about you from…” moments

Followers don’t guarantee any of that. Mental availability does.

4) Community behavior

Strong brands don’t get likes. They get:

If no → you have built a brand
