A powerful concept everyone needs to know:

Resulting.

I first learned about it in Annie Duke’s book, “Thinking in Bets” (a must-read).

This cognitive bias makes you judge yourself and others solely based on the outcome of a result (rather than the entire process).

In interviews, you can have all the qualifications and perfect responses, but the company goes with the CEO's kid instead. 

Other examples:

• An author publishes a great book, but the release date gets overshadowed by a celebrity memoir.

• An athlete trains perfectly but gets injured due to a freak accident.

• A poker player makes all the statistically correct choices, but busts on a bad break. 

“Resulting” is also risky because you might use a bad approach, get lucky once, and end up learning the wrong lesson.

If you want to avoid ‘Resulting,’ try these 3 tips:

1. Focus on process over results.
↳ Lean into the process by breaking your plan into steps and sticking to it.

2. Ask, ‘Did I follow a well-thought-out plan?’ 
↳ If it was a solid plan and you followed it, then you did the right thing, even if the outcome was unfavorable. 

3. Learn from failures and wins
↳ Reflect on the process when things go wrong (and right), not just the end result.

Not getting the outcome you wanted isn’t failure.

Failure is letting an outcome dictate the entire experience. 

Control what you can control.
You will eventually succeed if you commit to the process. 🙌

Here’s a little secret:

The best hiring managers don’t care about the gap itself. 

They care about:

• The cause
• What was learned
• The growth that came from it

How to increase your luck surface area (and make good things find you):

Luck feels random until you understand how to create it.

There are 4 types of luck, according to Dr. James Austin:

1. Blind Luck:

Chance luck is outside your control: 

• Finding money on the sidewalk
• Winning the lottery
• Being born into wealth or privilege

Be grateful for good fortune when it happens.

But realize that waiting for chance luck is a trap. 
(It makes you dependent on external factors.)

2. Motion Luck:

This is luck from taking action.

Example: A salesperson making 100 cold calls.

If there is a 1-in-100 chance of a sale, and you make 100 calls, then you approach the statistical likelihood of someone saying ‘Yes.’

But be wary of busyness. You don’t just want to work hard; you also want to work smart.

How to increase ‘motion luck’:

• Say ‘Yes’ to new opportunities (especially early in your career).
• Experiment often, measure your progress, and do more of what’s working.

3. Spotting Luck:

This is luck where your preparation and experience allow you to identify opportunities.

Example: An investor who analyzes market trends to spot undervalued stocks.

How to increase ‘spotting luck’:

• Put yourself in an environment where things are happening (often metro cities).
• Be a lifelong learner; follow your curiosity across diverse topics.
• Hold your plans loosely—so you can grab better ones when they come along.

4. Attracting Luck:

“Magnetism luck” is when your reputation pulls opportunities toward you.

Example: Being asked to give a keynote speech at an event.

How to increase ‘attracting luck’:

• Develop a reputation for being world-class at one thing.
• Build a strong personal brand by sharing your ideas online.
• Double down on what is authentically you. As Naval Ravikant says in a different quote, “Nobody can compete with you on being you.”

Don’t wait for the stars to align, but align them yourself.
