I’ll tell you what’s damn near impossible, getting buy-in from leadership to invest in organic social.

Which is ironic, because with no questions asked, they’re willing to hire SDRs on the spot.

It’s because organic social is sold internally as a nice to have, and nice to haves are synonymous with cost centers, aka leadership is substantially more resistant to spend there.

Whereas sales roles are synonymous with value creation.

So if you’re an SMM at a tech brand who has struggled getting buy-in from leadership, you need to sell organic social in a way they can wrap their head around it.

Their SDRs are expensive. They only work 8 hours/day. They burn out. They take PTO. They need to be managed.

But the algorithm is a 24/7 salesman for your business. If you’re creating tons of organic content, the algorithm will ALWAYS be feeding your content to new people.

That’s your brand's messaging on the feeds of people at all hours of the day. On holidays. At 3am. Nonstop.

This isn’t me saying to tell leadership to choose between a sales team and organic social, it’s me saying that sometimes you need to speak leadership’s language to get them to understand the value creation of organic social.

I’ve spent the last 2 years explaining this to marketers…

We send a once monthly agency update to ~150 marketing leaders.

We share client wins, team wins, and highlight a few pieces of viral content we’ve made in the last 30 days.

The entire goal of the update is to nurture our warmest leads.

But the biggest ROI from the agency update has been something personal for me:

I added my grandparents to the email so they can get a peek into what I’m building.

Both of my grandfathers were legit business men.

One of them built and sold an insurance firm.

The other was a President for Xerox in the mid 2000s. 

My grandpa who worked at Xerox received our agency update on Friday, where I shared a little bit about our sales process.

He replied, mentioning how he is really into retirement and doesn’t think about work much, 

But he said the email reminded him of the Xerox professional selling approach. 

And he provided a full breakdown of their SPIN selling process.

Something about being able to share my early career with the wisdom of both of my sharp grandfathers is quite literally the coolest thing I think I’ve experienced.

Here’s something ground breaking:

If you want your brand to be witty on socials, the person making the content needs to be witty.

If you want your brand to be polished on socials, the person making the content needs to be polished.

If you want your brand to be unhinged on socials, the person making the content needs to be unhinged.

Luckily all of these are skills that can be learned.

But companies seem to overlook the importance of matching the talent they hire for social media with their goals of how they want to show up on socials.

Don’t expect the vet marketer you hired in 2018 who isn’t clever, to suddenly create clever content for your niche brand overnight because you decided you want to take a page our of Ryan Air’s book.

Like anything, it’s a skill that needs to be built.

A few weeks ago I shared some of the most pivotal resources with Irupe behind why I started No Boring Brands. 

They were Ted Talks and research papers on the data behind why humor is one of the most effective ways to get consumers to take the action you wish for them to take.

Unprompted, Irupe went and bought one of the books recommended in the Ted Talk.

This fired me up so much.

Honestly that's never something I thought about when starting a company, I thought I'd be the only person mad enough to try to find a way to make a living through memes.
