Does anyone actually read cover letters anymore?

Short answer:

At large companies almost never.

At small or mid-sized companies, it's more likely.

But even when they’re read… most cover letters are a snoozefest.

Here’s how to make yours stand out instantly:

🍊 Go on LinkedIn. Find someone who works at the company.

🍊Look for a shared connection like same school, same volunteer org, mutual friends, etc.

🍊Message them and ask how they like working there.

🍊 If the conversation goes well and they recommend the company...

➡️ Open your cover letter like this:

“Hi [Hiring Team], I recently spoke with [Name], your [Job Title], and they had great things to say about working at [Company]. Therefore I’m excited to apple to the [Job title] role.”

It makes the reader pause.

You've met someone at the company and are actually intentional (most job applications are just blasted out without reading the job description).

It's one of the best opening lines you can have!

SUCH A FLAGRANT VIOLATION! This company Skillify is generating AI images of me, pretending to sell courses as me.

My likeness and content has been ripped off for years, but this is the first time I have seen someone create new AI images of me.

It's tough to trust anyone anymore.

Advice to folks out there:

Be extremely cautious about buying courses from unfamiliar websites.

I don't even have a course on the topic this website is promoting, they obviously are going to sell you some AI generated sludge.

All my courses are either:

🍊On LinkedIn Learning
🍊On Spotify
🍊On CourseCareers

Only reputable sites!

Oh and nearly all of my posts that get good engagement are stolen by others on LinkedIn and positioned as their own.

And if you search my proprietary strategies and frameworks, tools like Chat GPT will full throated LIE and make up what sounds like that framework could be, without telling the reader that it was just made up on the spot.

This freaks me out - I don't want people thinking they are following Madeline Mann endorsed strategies when really it's terrible advice (ChatGPT and I regularly DISAGREE when it comes to job search advice).

It's exhausting out here :(  I'm sad, frankly.

How to answer: “Tell me about a time you failed.” in a job interview.

🍊 Step 1: Share a real failure.

Pick a real mistake, but not one damning to your character. (For example: overlooking a detail or not documenting a process.)

🍊 Step 2: Walk through the example.

Explain the context, what went wrong, and the actions you took to address it.

🍊 Step 3: Highlight the lesson.

Interviewers don’t care that you failed, but they'll want to know how you dealt with the situation and if you grew from it.

An example of this could be when something went wrong in a project, you realized you needed better documentation, so you created a system to prevent issues moving forward.”

Say these SUPER POWERFUL words to be more persuasive in an interview:

One of the best ways to get a company to hire you is feel like you're already a member of the team.

Do this by saying the NAMES of other people in the organization during an interview. 

So, when you’re asked in an interview:

🍊 “Why are you leaving your job?”

🍊 “Why are you interested in this job?”

Here’s the strongest way to start your answer:

“When (insert name of recruiter) reached out to me after finding me on LinkedIn, I had to look into this opportunity.”

or

“After talking with (Name) in Accounting about what it’s like to work here, I got curious.”

Notice what’s happening here:

You’re showing that you’ve already built connections inside the company. You’re not just another name from a job board.

We’ve been taught to write our resumes the wrong way.

We were told to pick out the post impressive things we have done in the past… instead of building our resume around the next role.

Here’s the fix:

🍊 Start with the role you want next.

🍊 Then work backwards to position your past experience as proof you’re ready for it.

This is the difference between being ignored and getting interviews.

Channel Mindy Kaling's energy in your job search. Here's how: 

On The Mindy Project, Mindy’s character takes every insult and spins it into a compliment.

For example, one character says to her, “You have really wide feet.”

And she responded with, “Thank you, I never trip.”

As a job seeker, if you bring that energy into every job search and interview process, it's going to change the game!

Believe that every follow-up you do is appreciated by the company.

Believe that even if you didn't land the job, if you got far in the process, it shows that they saw value in you. 

Now you're seeing obstacles as opportunities. 

Job seekers who are more optimistic are consistently outperforming those who assume negative intent.

Now cue the pessimistic comments :)

Asking: "How long should my resume be?" is the wrong question.

The correct question is:

What does a company need to know about me to know I am the right fit for THIS role?

The answer to that question shrinks your resume dramatically.

Most people put too much information on their resumes.

Companies don't want a comprehensive view of your background. 

They want a summary of exactly what makes you a fit for what they are hiring for.

Sure, sometimes that can go to a second page.

If it's a great resume, that doesn't matter.

But if it's a poor resume, where the reader has to sift through to find the important information, a 2-page resume is going to be an opportunity-killer. 

To create a powerful resume, I recommend using the GLORY Formula.

Here's how to answer the interview question, “What’s your leadership style?”

Too many candidates fumble here because they:

Recite a buzzword-filled definition they read in a management book.

Or downplay their leadership because they haven’t had direct reports yet.

But there are plenty of times when you've directly influenced people. 

Here’s how to actually nail it:

🍊 Start with flexibility.

“My leadership style depends on the team and the person.” That shows you adapt, not force one rigid approach.

🍊 Share a real story.

Even if you’ve never had direct reports, you’ve still led in many ways like:

Contractors who needed direction.

Cross-functional teammates you influenced on a project.

Situations where you had to rally people to deliver.

🍊 Show your range.

For example (made more brief so you can get the gist):

My leadership style is flexible based on who I am leading.

When one of the team members wasn’t hitting deadline, I dug into their workload, found conflicting priorities, and created a plan that worked across teams.

With experienced teammates, I gave the end goal and trusted them to execute.

If they liked them, you might too, and that can be pretty reliable.

Now just because your friend's coach is competent, it also depends if that coach’s personality works for you.

We all like to be coached in different ways. Do you like a tough love no nonsense approach, do you like someone who’s more inspirational, do you like someone who feels very approachable. Think about that when evaluating coaches because personality does matter.

AI is replacing the intern, and here’s what e people need to do:

Colleges need to teach real world skills so that students come out of college already mid level.

They should focus on real-world projects and skill building.

If I were 18 today, here's what I would do:

Take the money I would have spent on college, float my expenses, and apprentice with someone who is great at what I want to do. 

I wouldn’t expect a paycheck because they could likely get my work for pennies on the dollar using AI.

But I would come out with practical skills, a portfolio of work, much less debt, and likely be mid-level by the time my peers are landing their first job out of school.

AI is replacing entry-level tasks.

The way forward is to have skills that are better than what an AI can do / know enough to properly prompt and check the work of AI.
