I never set out to build a 50-person agency.

When I started, it was just two friends who wanted to escape the daily grind and build something of our own. I’d always dreamed of being a professional musician, but I learned quickly how hard it was to make a living that way. Entrepreneurship became the next creative outlet.

We launched our agency eight years ago. My partner took the CEO role: out front, building relationships and closing deals. I took the COO role: behind the scenes, building systems, hiring people, learning everything I could, and turning chaos into structure. Over the years, we grew fast. What started as two people became a team of fifty.

And then the work changed.
 
The agency was no longer in its early, scrappy stage. It had grown into a full operation with real infrastructure, layers of management, and a large team. 

I had built exactly what I set out to build.

But I realized something important: the part that excited me most wasn’t just running the machine. It was building the machine: creating the systems, structures, and accountability layers that let other people perform at their best. That was where I added the most value and felt the most in flow.

That realization led me to look back at our journey with fresh eyes. I studied every peak and valley, mapping what drove growth and what stalled it:
- Launching a podcast doubled our revenue for over two years.
- Adding a third partner froze it for three.
- Re-anchoring to core values unlocked a new wave of momentum.

The patterns were clear. Growth wasn’t random. It was tied to a few critical moves. So I built my methodology around them. 

It starts with the foundations most agencies skip: core values that actually guide decisions, clear positioning, and real financial visibility.

But the real magic happens after the foundation.

Once those core pieces are in place, you can build systematized accountability: clear role scorecards, objective metrics, and a structure that doesn’t depend on the founder holding everything together. 

That’s what turns a founder-led agency into a real business. It’s what gets you out of the weeds and removes you as the bottleneck.

Me before 8 years of agency life vs. me after. 🤣😭🤷‍♂️



I'm not saying it was the direct cause of my thinning hair, but it definitely didn't help...

This is me, as an agency owner, watching myself make really bad choices that seemed good in the moment, like:


- billing at the end of the month

- starting work before receiving payment

- starting work before the contract was signed

I've resisted doing this for a long time, but I'm fully a believer now.

Ever thought, “Would this be easier with a partner?” I’ve been there and I’ve seen partnerships either skyrocket an agency or completely stall it. 

The truth is, a great partner can multiply your growth… but the wrong one will drain it.

In the latest episode of the Agency Uplift Podcast, I break down what I’ve learned about choosing or avoiding a business partner.

Here’s what I’ve learned from my own wins (and mistakes):
 ✅ Don’t choose someone like you: find someone who balances you
 ✅ Test the partnership before signing anything
 ✅ Be careful mixing friendship with business
 ✅ Never go 50/50: someone has to make the final call
