This morning I jumped on my 30th flight for the year as we get ready to open our second Flint office for the month.

Travel is not the glamorous highlight reel people think it is.

It’s early alarms, late nights, airports, laptops on your lap at the gate, and being away from the people you love the most.

I miss my beautiful wife every time I’m on the road.

But this is the season we’re in if we want to build something special.

Opening new offices. Building teams. Creating opportunities. Laying the foundations for a national business that will last decades.

None of this happens without showing up in person.

And while the travel is hard, the purpose makes it worth it.

Every new office we open means more clients served, more brokers supported, and more careers built.

And we’re only just getting started.

Some conversations genuinely change the way you think about business. Last night was one of them.

My neighbour has built and sold two huge companies, written four books and received an Order of Australia. He has reached a level of success that very few people ever do.

These days, he and his wife spend a lot of their time on philanthropy, sitting on the boards of not for profits and focusing on giving back to others.

My wife and I had dinner with them last night, and it was honestly one of the coolest homes I have ever been in. What meant even more was the time they both took to cook dinner for us.

I walked away realising how much you can learn just by being around people who have actually done the work. 

Those few hours of conversation taught me more than any course or business coach ever could.

The way they think, the way they make decisions and the stories they shared from decades of wins and losses gave me a completely different perspective. 

You simply cannot learn that from reading or theory.

It was a good reminder to keep surrounding yourself with people who stretch your thinking and your standards.

Every Saturday morning I bring coffee to my parents. It’s something I’ve done for years and it’s honestly one of my favourite parts of the week.

When I walk into their place, there’s this old school photo of me from my year 12 graduation.
Blazer on. A lot more hair than I have now.

Back then I was captain of rowing, cross country, skiing, athletics, my house. And I was awarded the Headmaster’s Medal for ‘an outstanding contribution to the school’ - they only give one of those out each year.

At the time it all felt important.
Looking back now, it feels like a completely different life.

Because when school ends, you go from structure and certainty to trying to figure out who you actually are.

And for me - that took more than a decade. 

School puts so much pressure on kids to have it all sorted, but so little of it prepares you for the real world.

Real life is messy.
You try things.
You fail.
You reset.
You doubt yourself.
You grow.

Every Saturday coffee run reminds me of that photo. Not as a peak, but as the starting point.

The real growth for me happened long after school ended.

Successful people aren’t threatened by others learning what they know.

They share.
They teach.
They lift others up.

Because when you truly operate from a place of abundance, you understand that collaboration doesn’t take anything away from you - it multiplies what’s possible.

The people who hold back knowledge are usually the ones who feel like they’re running out of it.

The people who give it freely are the ones who keep growing.

At Flint, that mindset is everything.
We don’t compete internally - we collaborate, share ideas, and help each other win.

That’s how great businesses scale.
Abundance always beats scarcity.

Most people are too busy to look back - but reflection is where the growth happens.

This podcast is built on a simple belief – business success isn’t just about data, deals, or spreadsheets. It’s about people, perspective, and growth.

For my entire professional career, I’ve made it a priority to sit down with the most insightful minds in our industry – because that’s the only way you truly evolve. I’ve always believed in collaboration over competition, and that approach has opened doors to conversations and lessons I could never have gained on my own.

I’ve been fortunate to speak at every major event in our industry – but the part I’ve always enjoyed most is the Q&A at the end. That’s where the real value is for any listener. It’s not about the presentation, it’s about the conversation. Hearing what others have to say, the challenges they’re facing, and how they think about solutions has always been where the biggest insights are found.

Every day, at least one new-to-industry broker reaches out to me for advice. That’s one of the best parts of this job – but I can only mentor so many people one-on-one. This podcast is my way of giving back at scale.

Big news today from Newcastle!! 

After more than 12 months of planning, we have officially opened the doors to our brand-new Flint office right in the heart of Newcastle. 

Newcastle is Australia's largest city outside the major capitals and has always been a place full of energy, growth and genuine people who get things done. Now, we get to be part of that - helping locals, business owners, and investors make smarter moves with the right finance behind them.

Our new space is led by Ben Robinson - one of the country’s best brokers and a close friend of mine. He’s joined by an incredible team including Matt Hollinworth, Anthony Toth, Lauren Franzmann and Bree Atkinson - with two more experienced brokers confirmed to join early next year. We have also built out a dedicated internal team of 15 specialists across complex credit, loan processing, post-settlement and compliance to support the new office. 

If you're a hungry broker based in Newcastle or the surrounding area, we are looking to expand to more than 10 brokers in the next few months, with an annual office settlement target of $1B+ by next year.

I used to think outworking everyone was the answer. Turns out, it was the problem.

For years, I believed the people who won were simply the ones who never stopped.
Seven days a week. Late nights. Early mornings. No real switch off.

And sure, that mindset got me ahead in the early days.
But it also drained me, clouded my judgement and made every decision heavier than it needed to be.

What I’ve realised is that high performance happens in bursts.
You can go all in, but you need the space to recover just as hard.

Rest isn’t a sign of weakness.
It’s the thing that keeps you sharp.

When you step away, your clarity improves.
Your creativity comes back.
You return with intent instead of exhaustion.

These days, I don’t feel guilty for taking time off.
It’s part of how I operate at my best.

Because success isn’t about being the busiest person in the room.
It’s about being the most effective when it counts.

Australia doesn’t have a housing problem.
We have a construction problem.

We’re not short on demand.
We’re short on supply that actually gets built.

Population growth is running hard, migration is still strong, and people want to buy homes. But the pipeline isn’t keeping up. Builders are stretched, costs are high, approvals are slow, and new projects keep getting delayed or cancelled altogether.

If we want any chance of easing the pressure, we need to build more homes - and we need to find smarter, more cost-effective ways to do it.

Modular. Prefab. Better planning systems. Faster approvals. More incentives for private developers. Real partnerships between government and industry instead of political headlines.

Because until we fix how we build, it won’t matter how much demand there is.
We’ll always be playing catch-up.

Big couple of days on the road.

Spent the last two days with the directors and new brokers of our next office - filming content, refining our strategy, and mapping out our 2026 growth plan.

We also met with dozens of referral partners across legal, real estate, development and property management - all of whom have been waiting for us to open in this city.

We’ll be announcing our next location very soon.

Every conversation just reinforced how much opportunity sits ahead.

Very excited for what’s coming next.

Anyone can lead when the numbers look good. Real leadership is staying calm when everyone else is losing theirs.

The way you respond under pressure sets the tone for everyone around you.

So take a breath, steady yourself, and remember - your team doesn’t need a superhero. They just need someone steady enough to guide them through the storm.

Every time you scale fast, you pay a tax.

Not in money, but in time, energy and mistakes.

People see the wins on LinkedIn.
What they don’t see is the late nights fixing things that broke because we grew quicker than the systems did.

Fast growth is fun.
But it isn’t free.

One thing that makes a massive difference is having absolute rockstars in operations.
People like Ana Souza and Rushmi Shrestha who can spot problems early, stay calm under pressure and fix things faster because they have been through high-growth environments before.

Their experience means the fires get put out quicker and the gaps get closed properly, not patched over.

The tax is always there.
The trick is accepting it and building anyway.

Burnout doesn’t happen because you’re working too hard.

It happens because you’re working too hard on things that don’t give you energy.

When you’re aligned with your purpose, the workload feels different. It fuels you instead of draining you.

Check your energy often. Because how you feel determines how far you go.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned this year is this: If you want to grow fast, you need to hire before it feels comfortable.

Every time I’ve waited until we were “ready,” it was already too late.

Fast growth rewards the businesses that build capacity first and fill it second.

And the reason is simple.
It takes a minimum of 90 days for someone to really hit their straps in a new role.
That is just the reality.

Ninety days to learn the systems.
Ninety days to understand the culture.
Ninety days to get confident enough to make a real impact.

If you wait until the workload is overflowing, you spend the next three months underwater.
If you hire early, you give people the runway to ramp up and actually drive momentum.

Uncomfortable in the moment.
Game-changing in hindsight.

There’s something special about being in a room full of people who genuinely want to see each other win.

Back in Melbourne for the The CEO Magazine Global Executive of The Year Awards this week, and it felt good to be on the other side of the room this time.

Last year I was honoured to take out CEO of the Year for Banking and Financial Services Industry (BFSI). 

This year, I was back as a judge.

A full room of hard working professionals, each of them building something meaningful, pushing their teams forward, and showing up for one another.

Moments like this remind me why I love what I do. Recognition is great, but witnessing the effort, the character, and the pride behind the scenes is even better.

Grateful to be part of it again.
