A positioning mistake almost killed CRISPR's credibility

In 2012, two scientists found a way to make programmable genetic scissors for gene editing using CRISPR.

Before CRISPR, genetic editing cost $50,000 per edit & took months.
With CRISPR, it dropped to a few hundred per edit in weeks.

Revolutionary technology. But their pitch almost killed it.

CRISPR startups told investors: "We're ready to cure genetic disease today."

But there were still problems: 
• Delivery into human cells? Unsolved. 
• Off-target effects? Still happening.
• Immune responses? Unpredictable.

Founders promised miracles for 3 years CRISPR startups struggled for funding. The narrative was collapsing.

The investors saw the gap between vision and viability.

They had Theranos PTSD. They feared overhype, regulatory nightmares, and scientific naivety.

But 1 company changed the game.

In 2015, Intellia Therapeutics reframed their pitch:

"𝘞𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴. 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴."

Same technology. Different story.

They stopped promising cures & they started showing clinical progress.

The result was a $1.1B market cap, and its industry credibility rebuilt.

CRISPR didn't fail. Its first pitches nearly killed its credibility.

The investors didn't reject the science. They rejected the story.

When your tech is infrastructure-stage, but you pitch product-stage results, you don't just lose funding.
You lose credibility.

And credibility is harder to rebuild than technology.

Black gill disease haunts Georgia's coasts. Cutting Georgia shrimp revenue in half, from $10M to $5.5M in a decade

Shrimp packagers shuttered. Communities vanished. The local industry was dying. 

Shrimpers and fishery managers tried everything.
• Broad chemical treatments to kill bacteria
• Controlling temperatures
• Improving water quality

But nothing mitigated the disease. The shrimp population was dying fast. 

In 2007, Lou Burnett and his team built a treadmill for $47 to try to study how the disease impacted shrimp. 

Shrimpers knew black gill killed shrimp but didn't understand how.

The study measured oxygen uptake under stress. Revealed how the parasite suffocates shrimp when they swim.

Gave shrimpers an equation they could control: 
Stress + infection + low oxygen = shrimp death

Not a product. Controlled variables.

By 2024, the study turned black gill from mystery into manageable risk.

The headlines screamed waste. The researchers couldn't control the narrative once it escaped.
That's the risk when technical work meets public perception without business framing.

A quantum researcher came to me. Brilliant infrastructure work for space systems. NASA labeled him "outsider" because he lacked credentials. 

His pitch: "I have a quantum-inspired ISRU lattice system."
We repositioned: "I've identified critical infrastructure gaps in the $2T space economy."

Result: NASA Game-Changing Technologies director reaching out. Ex-GE executive calling him a "true renaissance man." Innovator connections opening.

24-hour turnaround from outsider to insider.

A short horror story perfect for LinkedIn

Three years ago, I shared a post about my divorce.
It got 47,000 likes.

200 likes for solving a $2M product problem. 

So, I shared more pain. 

Therapy breakthroughs. Panic attacks. If it bleeds, it leads. 
My daughter asking why I'm always on my phone.

Each confession performed better than the last.

Yesterday I caught myself hoping something bad would happen, so I'd have content.

I'm writing this because I need to stop.

But I already know, this post will do numbers.
You'll comment "so brave" and "I needed this".

And next week, I'll be back.

Because I'm not a product manager anymore.
I'm a grief performer with 10K followers who only love me when I bleed.

Is AI a $30B Solution for a $10M Problem?

OpenAI is projected to earn $12.7–$13B in 2025

But they also committed $30B to a single Oracle data center. That's a huge chasm to cross

To close that gap they'll need:
• Massive enterprise partnerships
• Expansion into every industry
• Higher subscription prices

But what problem is Gen AI actually solving?

We’ve had AI for decades:
• Self-driving cars for safer transport
• Google Maps for better navigation
• Game AI for dynamic gameplay

But those were research to product transitions.
All solving actual problems.

But right now, Gen AI feels like hype without a clear problem.
They don't have the infrastructure yet for products. They're selling as if it's product-ready.

Today we use Gen AI for helping us:
• Generates code snippets
• Act as therapy chatbots
• Summarize text
• Write emails

It's useful, but is it transformative right now? Are those problems worth $30B? 

Compare it to GPS:
GPS had clear military value during 30-year development. Missile guidance, troop coordination. Proven ROI before civilian applications emerged.

Gen AI doesn't have that anchor.

They're burning billions searching for the killer application while positioning as if they've already found it.
They’re framing "LLMs solve your problems today". 

They're forcing businesses to rely on them only.

But in reality, they need infrastructure for applications that justify the cost

When infrastructure gets positioned as product before applications mature, you get:
• Unsustainable burn rates
• Pressure to find revenue fast
• Compromises that undermine the research (like lobbying for lower accuracy standards or no guardrails)

OpenAI might be brilliant infrastructure research.

But they're treating it like product-stage business.

That $30B gap shows the cost of positioning infrastructure wrong.

Science without business is expensive curiosity. Business without science is selling air.

Most scientists don't realize they're building for no one until it's too late.
Most businesses don't realize they're selling air until no one buys. 

I interviewed amputees. Designed a better prosthetic arm. Pitched it. Dead on arrival. Not enough ROI.

I spent the next year learning what turns science into revenue. Not what makes the best product, but what convinces someone to spend years on R&D for an uncertain outcome.

The Business of Science exists because expensive curiosity isn't enough.

As CSI photographs the scene, my partner watches from the wall. Fedora low. Knife visible.
Only I see him.

"Anything yet?" the chief asks.

My partner steps closer. Blade rising.

"Witnesses saw a dump truck," I say. Not true.

The chief frowns. "Where's the victim?"

The knife touches my throat.

"Be-behind the fridge."

The chief finds the passage. Bodies below.
My partner smiles. Knife lowers.

But the chief will have questions.
Each answer, another lie.
Behind me, the air thickens.
The Lie was intact.

The lion looked to the horizon. Dark shapes moving through the heat.

"They won't catch up. Too far."

The vulture watched. "I've seen this before. Today they're far. Tonight, you sleep and hear them closer. Tomorrow you're gone."

"Takes more than three to kill me."

"But they keep coming. They will stop. But they won't quit."

The vulture flew up into the copper sky. It circled the lion. "It's a new world now." 

The figures in the distance point at the vulture and point at the lion below.

"You're not the king anymore. "

The featherless bipeds came walking.
Humans are on the savannah.

• Dread is knowing something is wrong but not knowing what.
• Terror is when you see the thing you fear coming at you. 
• Horror is the aftermath. The body, the blood, the remains

This story lives in dread.

The lion sees the shapes on the horizon. He knows they're coming. He just doesn't understand yet that they will never stop. That's the persistence of early human hunters. The dread that builds with every step closer.

Persistence doesn't need to be faster. It just needs to be relentless.
In business. In life. The apex isn't always the strongest.
It's the one that refuses to quit.
