I used to tell friends that being a founder, is "like being punched in the stomach everyday, and coming back for more the next".

The highs are really high.
The lows are really low.

You need to make sure you're in the right place if you're thinking of becoming one.

The founder track is a MAJOR commitment.

But how do you do it if you have so many competing ideas at the same time?

Here's a solid way to evaluate any concept.
Based on the Ikigai framework.

It aligns passion, skills, market demand, and viability
to help you find your startup idea:

1️⃣ What You Love:
Are you passionate about this problem?

2️⃣ Your Strengths:
Does it leverage your skills and experience?

3️⃣ Building for Needs:
Can it address market demand effectively?

4️⃣ Can You Be Paid? 
What is the financial viability of your idea?

Try to be in that sweet spot
where what you love,
what you're good at,
what the world needs,
and what you can be paid for intersect.

You don't need to hit EVERY point, but the more the better as you get closer to an idea that hits all the right notes.

How do you divide equity within the team?
This is one of the most challenging decisions founders face.
Early on in their journey.

And it’s not just about the numbers, it’s about fairness, commitment, and success.

Don't see this as a negotiation.
About how you can maximize your share.
And give the least amount possible to others.

A co-founder can eventually walk away if they feel undervalued.

Here's how to do it instead:

👉 Evaluate contributions, workloads, risk and experience
👉 Go for a dynamic split that values individual commitment
👉 Protects everyone by ensuring equity is earned over time
👉 Focus on being fair
👉 Have a "lead" founder (ideally)
 
Remember.
Being fair is NOT the same as being equal.

Equity discussions are about building trust
and ensuring everyone feels valued.

It’s not just a negotiation, it’s the foundation of a long-term partnership.

Finding “a reason for being”

When I worked at Google in 2017, a creative lead joined our team after a long career in the creative world, working with major advertisers to develop their campaigns and concepts.

One of his recent wins was an ad campaign for Nescafe, fully centered around the concept of ikigai, the Japanese framework to find purpose in life.

“Ikigai? For a supermarket coffee brand? Really?” (to myself of course).

Surprisingly, the campaign worked. REALLY well. It won a ton of awards and was very well received by the public.

Since then, Ikigai has been a concept that I revisit from time to time to reflect on.

It is a beautiful way to help people find balance, or what the Japanese wording would translate to as, “A reason for being”.

And recently, I realized, it’s not just a poetic concept.

It’s actually a GREAT framework for founders looking to pick the right idea to build.

Most aspiring founders struggle with this ONE thing more than anything else:
What is my idea?

What will my startup be about?

And they should. Launching a startup is one of the most difficult experiences in the business world.

It’s just you, and your idea.
It’s anxiety, pressure, and trying to build something out of nothing, all on your own.

Which you will work on for a LONG time. Years even.

“We’re now ready to go meet investors”.

I’ve been working over the summer with a great team, preparing them for their upcoming $1M fundraise.

A pair of extremely talented and motivated founders working in the fintech space.

Although I LOVED working with them, it was a really tough project in one aspect.

The guys just couldn’t take their founder hats off.

All they cared about was how amazing their product was, and they couldn’t shake this idea that investors will automatically jump on-board.

They couldn’t start understanding the investor perspective, what investors need to fund a great business.

Investors don’t invest in great ideas per say.

They invest in businesses that will give them the right returns on their money. Simple.

Short story here is, if you’re struggling to get funding, it’s because you’re just not fundable yet.
