🎵 I wish  #NFTs existed 10 - 15 years ago.

I have practically been a music nerd for all my life. 

I used to play in various bands and as a solo artist as well as worked for record labels, organized festivals & managed up and coming artists.

I consider this experience very precious and am thankful for the opportunities I received.

I got to play in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard and toured the entire US.

Ranked up over half a million plays on Myspace (Yes, Myspace did exist back then)

Got featured in the biggest Rock/ Metal magazine in China.

And was on German TV.

Why am I telling you this?

It sounds like that could pay the bills right?

It didn't. AT ALL. It was a +- business.

Independent artists without much representation have it hard. 

Music piracy did not help at the beginning of the century.

And the model of streaming pays independent artists unfairly.

Along came COVID and seriously threatened live music and musicians.

Music NFTs taking off (in the next few years) feels like a resurrection for the music industry to me.
 
🎸 For independent artists NFTs could provide an opportunity to connect with fans in unique ways.

NFTs are not a get-rich-quick scheme, it needs work, but it could enable artists to make a better living than now.

You don't need millions of streams on Spotify, but maybe only a few hundred devoted fans that invest in your journey and see you grow.

💿 Record labels, publishing agencies & more can use NFTs to offer new experiences to music lovers.
At the same time creating new income streams could also mean that more investments go into up and coming artists long-term.

It puts a little bit of the power back into the hands of the music industry.

I've seen artists disappear over the years because they ran out of fuel at some point (financial wise).

BREAKING: OpenAI just lost a landmark copyright case in Germany. And it changes everything for AI companies in Europe:

This morning, a Munich court ruled that OpenAI violated copyright law by training ChatGPT on German song lyrics without permission.

This is the first major European ruling of its kind.

And it's a game-changer.

Here's what happened:

GEMA (Germany's music rights society) sued OpenAI over nine songs, including hits by Helene Fischer and Herbert Grönemeyer.

The court found that ChatGPT:
→ Stored copyrighted lyrics in its training
→ Reproduced them almost word-for-word
→ Did both without a licence

The verdict?

OpenAI must:
→ Stop using the lyrics
→ Pay damages
→ Disclose how they used the songs

Why this matters:

The court rejected the "Text and Data Mining" defence that AI companies rely on in Europe.

It said memorising and reproducing copyrighted work isn't fair use.

It's infringement.

This is the opposite of recent US rulings where courts leaned toward fair use for AI training.

Europe is drawing a hard line:
↳ Creators' rights are not up for grabs.

What's next:
↳ OpenAI will appeal.

But GEMA is already going after Suno AI in January.

The message is clear: AI companies need licences, not loopholes.

The numbers are staggering:

→ 50,000 AI tracks uploaded to Deezer daily
→ That's 34% of all new music
→ 70% of AI track streams are fraudulent
→ Only 0.5% of total streams (for now)

And there's more:

73% think using copyrighted work to train AI is unethical.
70% worry about artists' livelihoods.

80% of people want AI music labeled.

Yet only ONE platform is tagging AI content.

The music industry is at a crossroads.
