Everyone’s watching the rate jump but the real story is what’s quietly tightening behind it.

Spot rates are up across vans, reefers, and flatbeds. But this doesn’t feel like a seasonal blip...it feels like the system is slowly rebalancing itself.

> Capacity is resetting
Smaller fleets are exiting. Truck orders are slowing. Supply is shrinking just enough to make rates stick instead of fade after a week.

> Costs are creeping higher 
Diesel, insurance, and maintenance are inching up again. That forces carriers to hold pricing discipline instead of chasing cheap freight.

> Policy is adding friction
New CDL rules could slow down driver inflow. Fewer new entrants mean tighter capacity heading into Q4.

> Freight flows are shifting 
East and Gulf ports are heating up as importers reroute around tariff and ocean rate uncertainty. The Midwest is softer but lane imbalances are keeping national averages buoyant.

So yes, rates are rising, but the signal isn’t “boom.”  
It’s stabilization. The kind that builds a real floor under the market.

If this holds, contract rates will start to follow by late Q4. Not an explosion but a quiet correction.

📈 TL/DR: Spot Rates Surge Across All Equipment Types. Here’s where the Truckstop.com average rates per mile landed last week (ending Oct. 3 — Week 39):

1️⃣ Dry Van
 • Biggest jump in 5 weeks.
 • Rates: +7¢ — up 6.5% YoY
 • Loads: +5.7% WoW, and nearly +25% YoY
 • First back-to-back weekly gains since late June

2️⃣ Reefer
 • Largest increase since pre–Labor Day.
 • Rates: +4.4¢ — up ~7% YoY, +3.4% vs. Week 40
 • Loads: +16.6% — biggest weekly surge since June

3️⃣ Flatbed
 • Strongest gain since May.
 • Rates: +1.7¢ — up 5% YoY, +3.4% vs. Week 40
 • Loads: –4.4%, but still ~40% higher YoY

💡 What It Means

1. Spot rates are climbing across all segments, driving the Market Demand Index to its highest level since May (International Roadcheck week).

2. Total market rates jumped nearly 3¢ — biggest move since late June.

3. Van and flatbed volumes show sustained strength — a sign of healthy freight demand.
