There are no comprehensive training programs for sales managers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing fields. Their sales teams are usually composed of technical people who have trouble simplifying complex products for prospects to understand. As a former chemist that transitioned into an international sales manager leading teams of technical sales reps, I understand the challenge of that new role.

Early in my career, I was on a long sales trip. 
Back to back meetings. 
Hours on the road. 
Everything in me was focused on performance. 
Hit the targets. 
Move to the next stop. 
Get it done. 

Somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing people. 
I only saw outcomes. 

Then one afternoon, I walked into a small customer’s shop. 
Nothing special. 
Just a man working hard to keep his business alive. 

He didn’t want a pitch. 
He didn’t care about the features or the script I had rehearsed. 
He wanted someone to slow down long enough to hear him. 

So I did. 
We talked about his business. 
His kids. 
The legacy he hoped to leave behind. 

Before I left he said, 
“You’re the first rep who didn’t rush me.” 

That account became one of my most loyal clients. 
Not because I pushed harder. 
Because I connected deeper. 

That day taught me something I still teach field sales teams today. 
Connection creates commitment.

Who in your network needs a real conversation instead of a polished pitch this week?

She froze before I even said a word.
 
We were in our one-on-one, and she already knew what I was about to say.

What truth have you been holding back?

There was a week last year when everything seemed to be falling apart. 

Projects missed deadlines. 
Clients were frustrated. 
My team was exhausted. 

I felt it too, but I knew they were watching me. 

So I took a deep breath before our morning meeting and said, 
“I know this week has been hard, but we’ll figure it out together.” 

The shift in the room was instant. 
They didn’t need me to be perfect. 
They needed me to be peaceful. 

Leadership isn’t about controlling the storm. 
It’s about calming the people in it. 

When has your team needed peace from you more than perfection?

I forgot how much I love this feeling. 
The rush. 
The laugh that comes from deep in your chest. 
The moment your body remembers you were once a girl who ran toward joy without thinking twice. 

I went down every slide like I was 16 again. 
No hesitation. 
No overthinking. 
Just go. 

And honestly, it felt like a reminder I needed. 

Somewhere along the way, we start believing adulthood means caution. 
Responsibility becomes our identity. 
We lead, we plan, we hold it all together. 
But the part of us that loves thrill and play and being fully alive is still right there waiting for permission. 

I’ve been through heavy seasons. 
Seasons where joy didn’t feel accessible. 
Seasons that made me quieter on the inside. 

But I’ve also learned that joy doesn’t just happen to us. 
We have to choose it. 
We have to say yes to it. 
Even in small ways. 
Even when life feels full. 

That day on the slide wasn’t about the slide. 
It was about remembering I am still allowed to feel light. 
I am still allowed to be excited. 
I am still allowed to experience joy without justification. 

What’s one place in your life where you’re ready to let joy back in?

A leadership team I’m coaching is full of smart, driven people. 
They have the right product. 
They have motivated salespeople. 
They aren’t afraid of hard work. 

Yet every forecast call feels like triage. 
Projects start strong but stall. 
Deals sit in limbo. 
Managers spend hours solving the same problem in different ways. 

The breakthrough came when they stopped blaming “lack of accountability” and admitted 80% of their headaches weren’t about skill. 
They had no consistent process. 

We rolled out butcher paper and mapped their sales flow from first contact to retention. 
Every hidden handoff, every ambiguous owner, every missing step came out onto the wall. 
Blind spots jumped off the page. 
Everyone could see exactly where deals died and where customers got lost. 

Then we rebuilt it. 
Clear stages. 
Clear owners. 
Clear definitions of what moves a deal forward. 

That clarity didn’t restrict them. 
It unleashed them. 
Reps knew what to do next. 
Managers knew where to coach. 
Leadership could finally see what was real and what was wishful thinking. 

Your systems either drain energy or free it. 
Mapping your process is the first step to freedom. 

Where in your sales process would a simple visual reveal the biggest gaps?

The hardest feedback I ever received came disguised as a quiet comment in a tense meeting.

I was leading my sales team through a rough quarter. 
You could feel the frustration settling in. 
Not loud. 
Not obvious. 
Just sitting underneath everything they said and did. 

So I asked, 
“What’s getting in your way?” 

One rep spoke up. 
“We just don’t feel seen.” 

My first instinct was to defend myself. 
To explain. 
To list everything I was doing to support them. 

But something in me said pause. 
So I did. 

And in that quiet moment, I finally heard what I had been missing. 
They didn’t need perfection. 
They needed presence. 

They didn’t want more structure or more direction. 
They wanted a leader who could sit in the truth with them without trying to fix it too fast. 

That meeting reminded me of something I’ve learned again and again. 
People rarely share their real truth first. 
They wait to see if you’re the kind of leader who can handle it. 

Listening isn’t passive. 
It’s leadership. 
It’s giving people the safety to be honest without bracing for your reaction. 

When was the last time you created enough space for someone to tell you what they really needed?

We were standing in the checkout line. 
Long day. Everyone tired. 

My youngest looked at the candy and said, 
“Mom, can I have this?” 
I said no. 

He paused, then asked again, 
“But what if I ask nicely?” 

I wanted to stay firm, but the way he said it stopped me. 
Polite. Hopeful. Determined. 

So I laughed and said, 
“Fine, just one.” 

Driving home, it hit me. 
He didn’t take my no as rejection. 
He took it as a chance to try again, but differently. 

And isn’t that what faith is? 
Not giving up after the first no. 
Learning to ask again with a better heart. 

Where have you stopped asking God for something just because the first answer was no?

We were late for church. 
I was half dressed, the boys were arguing over a hoodie, 
and I felt my patience slipping. 

Then from the other room I heard, 
“Hey, let’s figure it out together.” 

It was my oldest, calming his little brother down. 
No yelling. No power struggle. 
Just steady leadership. 

I stopped in the hallway and listened. 
He helped him find another hoodie, 
and they both came running out like nothing happened. 

I stood there with tears in my eyes, 
realizing I was witnessing the fruit of seeds I’d planted for years. 

All those conversations about patience. 
All those reminders to lead with kindness. 
They were taking root. 

Leadership doesn’t start in boardrooms. 
It starts in back seats and living rooms. 
It’s shaped by what our kids see us model when we think they’re not watching. 

Where are you quietly shaping the next leader in your life without realizing it?

I was leading a team spread across three time zones, and she was the one person I never worried about.

Always composed.
Always on top of her number.
Always the steady one.

So I stopped checking in as often.

She didn’t need it, right?

One Friday evening, long after I’d closed my laptop, my phone rang. Her name lit up the screen. I almost didn’t answer. I thought it could wait until Monday.
 
The second I picked up, I heard it.
The crack in her voice.
The breath she tried to steady.
The exhaustion she couldn’t hide anymore.

She was burned out.
She felt invisible.
She’d been carrying everything alone.

And I realized I had been managing performance, not people.

That moment changed me.

From then on, I made one simple rule:
Every week, I check on the human first.
The results come second.

Because even your best people need to be seen, not just measured.
Especially the ones who never complain.
Especially the ones you depend on the most.

Belief fuels behavior. When people feel seen, supported, and safe, they execute differently. And the results follow every single time.

When I first became a manager, I thought data was leadership. 
I tracked every number and every call. 
I built color-coded reports that would impress anyone. 

But my team wasn’t responding. 
They hit targets, but their energy was gone. 

One day, a rep said quietly, 
“You know every number on this sheet, but you don’t know how I’m doing.” 

That hit me hard. 

I closed my laptop and started asking better questions. 
Not about metrics, but about people. 
“How are you feeling about this goal?” 
“What’s getting in your way?” 

Trust didn’t come from a dashboard. 
It came from the moments between the data. 

What’s one conversation you’ve avoided because it didn’t fit in your spreadsheet?

Years ago, I was chasing a big deal. 
The kind that could change your entire quarter. 

After our first meeting, everything felt right. 
They loved the conversation. 
They said they’d get back to me soon. 

Weeks passed. Silence. 
And I started to spiral. 

Maybe I pushed too hard. 
Maybe I wasn’t their first choice. 
Maybe I should just let it go. 

Then I remembered something I always tell my clients. 
“Silence doesn’t mean rejection. It means reflection.” 

So I sent a short, thoughtful follow-up. 
Not a pitch. Just a reminder that I cared about helping them solve the problem we discussed. 

They responded that same day. 
They had been waiting for budget approval and I got the deal. 

That moment taught me follow-up isn’t about pressure. 
It’s about belief in your value and in your purpose. 

What opportunity might still be waiting on the other side of your hesitation?

A few years ago, I was running on fumes. 
Traveling. Teaching. Parenting. 
Telling myself I’d rest when things slowed down. 

They never did. 

Until my body forced me to stop. 
I remember sitting in a hotel room, exhausted, thinking, 
“This can’t be what success feels like.” 

That was my wake-up call. 
Now I build rest into my rhythm. 
Not after the work, but as part of it. 

Because rest doesn’t take away from your results. 
It restores your ability to create them. 

What boundary could you set this week to protect your energy before you run out of it?

The hardest leadership lesson I learned this week had nothing to do with work. It started with me saying, I’m empty. 

I had a hard conversation with someone this week. 
Not a blow up. 
Not a conflict. 
Just the truth I’ve avoided saying out loud. 

“I’m emotionally tapped out. 
I don’t have anything else to give right now.” 

Those words felt heavy. 
Because I am used to being the strong one. 
The steady one. 
The one who keeps showing up even when my tank is past empty. 

But this week reminded me of something leadership and entrepreneurship have taught me again and again. 
You cannot keep giving from a place you refuse to acknowledge is drained. 

In sales we talk about follow through. 
In leadership we talk about support. 
In entrepreneurship we talk about grit and resilience. 

But we rarely talk about capacity. 
We rarely admit when the weight is too much. 
We rarely say, “I can’t keep carrying this alone.” 

That conversation taught me something important. 
Honesty creates alignment. 
When you name your limits, the right people rise to meet you. 
They decide whether they want to be part of the support or part of the strain. 

Sometimes the bravest thing you can say isn’t yes. 
It’s “I’m empty.” 
Because that’s the moment where real leadership begins. 

When was the last time you told the truth about what you no longer have the capacity to hold?

One client’s org chart looked perfect on paper but day to day was chaos.

Seven years ago, I started Transformed Sales with more questions than answers.

I just had this quiet conviction that wouldn’t let me go. 

In those early days I kept wondering why talented people weren’t performing at the level they were capable of. 
And then I saw it up close. 
Not in the metrics. 
In the people. 

Most teams don’t struggle because they lack skill. 
They struggle because they don’t believe they can do more than what they’ve always done. 
The root always shows up in the fruit. 

I’ve worked with solopreneurs. 
I’ve worked with publicly traded companies. 
Different worlds. Same pattern. 
People grow first. 
Performance follows. 

The moment I understood that, everything shifted for me. 
My business. 
My leadership. 
My impact. 

I stopped fixing surface problems. 
I started helping leaders see what was happening inside their people. 
That’s when the real transformation happened. 

Seven years later, I’m grateful. 
For the clients who trusted me. 
For the rooms I never imagined I’d walk into. 
For the courage to keep going when it would’ve been easier to stop.

What’s one belief you had to outgrow to reach your next level?

Gratitude isn’t a list. It’s a lesson. 

A few years ago, I was in a season where everything felt hard. 
Work was busy, my boys needed me, and I was trying to be everything to everyone. 

One night I sat on the floor of my closet, tears in my eyes, and whispered, 
“God, I can’t do all of this.” 

That same week, a friend texted me, “List three things you’re grateful for.” 
I couldn’t think of anything at first. 
Then I looked around. 

A home filled with laughter. 
Clients who trusted me. 
Strength I didn’t know I had. 

That night, gratitude became more than a list. 
It became a lifeline. 

When life feels heavy, what small thing reminds you that you’re still held?

It hit me this morning how quiet my life has become. Just me and the boys. 

No rush of voices. 
No crowd in the kitchen. 
No family packed into every corner of the house. 

Just quiet. And in that quiet, I started thinking about the people who carried me through the past few years. The ones who never hesitated to show up. The ones who celebrated every step of my author journey, even when the path felt long and uncertain. 

One stood with me when I was newly divorced. 
One prayed me through grief. 
One believed in the work even before I published a single page. 

That is what I am grateful for today. 
Presence. 
The steady hands God placed in my life exactly when I needed them. 

So this Thanksgiving, I am not counting blessings. 
I am naming people.
