Add five pounds each week.

She didn’t give birth to me. She gave me life.

Today I’m honoring the woman who taught me that you don’t have to give birth to a child to be their mother.

Love, she showed me, is in the showing up.

In the listening.

In the quiet moments that shape who we become.

Soon after I was born, I was dropped off at Catholic Charities in Pittsburgh, PA.

I don’t carry that fact with anger.

I carry it with deep gratitude.

My birth parents made the brave and selfless decision to give me a life they couldn’t provide, and for that, I will always be thankful.

Because that choice led me to her.

My mom, Nina.
Pronounced with the long “i” (as in “nine”) though she was far too shy to correct anyone who said it differently.

She raised me as her own.

She always knew when I needed her, even from miles away.

And she loved deeply, quietly, completely.

She taught me many lessons over the years.

Here are three of my favorites:

I’m also a single mom to two incredible humans.  

My son (24),  my daughter (20) and one very happy rescue dog named Jax, who was found with his siblings and mom in an abandoned warehouse in Tennessee. 

Thankfully, every one of them found a loving home. We are blessed that he joined our family. 

For my hobbies, I love to work out, run races, and compete in international fitness competitions to stay accountable.

Walking on stage in a bikini and heels will keep any one of us accountable.

This morning I found myself getting teary eyed watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Not because anything was wrong, but because sometimes the simplest traditions tap into something tender.

If you felt that way too, you are not alone. There is room to just be. 

Before the day got too busy, I prepped our holiday meal, bundled up, took Jax out for his morning walk, and then headed out for my run in the chilly air. There is something grounding about moving your body on a day centered around gratitude.

And in true Thanksgiving spirit, I also cleaned out a kitchen drawer that had been accumulating 25 years of life stuff. Plastic silverware, chopsticks, and all kinds of little trinkets. 

Letting it all go felt surprisingly good.
A small reset, a fresh start, a reminder that clearing space creates room for what matters.

I am reminded of something important. 

Success is not built alone. It is built in community, in connection, and in the quiet moments when someone believes in you before you fully believe in yourself.

And if you are someone who feels overlooked or undervalued, especially today, I want you to know this.  I am cheering for you.
