James Clear adapted this from Archilochus, a Greek poet from 2.700 years ago who told soldiers: "We fall to the level of our training."

Navy SEALs adopted it. Athletes live by it. And it's the single most important lesson I learned scaling a sales team.

Here's what most workdays look like without systems:
- 9am → 15 minutes trying to remember yesterday's priorities 
- 10am → 20 minutes searching for that file someone needs 
- 3pm → Finally in flow. Phone buzzes. Another 20 minutes to get back. 
- 5pm → Forgot that important follow-up from this morning. 
- 8pm → Working late because nothing actually got done.
- +1 week → Not much moved the bottom line

I once lived this, you might be too.

It changed the moment we had systems.

Not productivity hacks. Not another CRM dashboard.

We mapped our business processes. Defined the goals. Identified activities that actually moved the needle and which didn't.

Our system had two layers:

Business layer → Structures that hold us accountable. Playbooks we fall back to by design. The "what" and "why" of every action.

Technical layer → n8n automations that executes the first 70% before we even start. Low-hanging fruit detected. Research done. Context loaded. Content draft written. Priorities done.

So when we showed up, we only focused on the 30% where humans make all the difference: judgment, strategy & establishing trust.

The results?
40+ meetings per rep per month. 30%+ close rates. Reps doing what they're actually good at. (fyi GTM nerds -> 99% outbound)

The system became our floor.
On bad days, tired days, distracted days - the system kept running. It caught what we dropped. It remembered what we forgot. It prioritized what we couldn't see.

Without, companies don't just stall, they bleed! Time. Money. Talent. Margin.

We've seen this movie before. But you haven't.

In 1930, typists earned good salaries and climbed the social ladder. A distinct skill few possessed. 

Why upskill? Why reskill? They were in a golden cage.
Decades passed. Comfortable. Settled.

Then dedicated word processors arrived in the 60s. Suddenly, everyone entering the workforce was expected to type. The dedicated function disappeared overnight*. All of them had to reskill.

The 1980s repeated the pattern. Computers spread across every department. The older generation struggled. Some adapted. Some gave up and never started.

If you're in the workforce today, most of us have never experienced a shift like this. Yes, the internet and mobile changed how we work. But we grew up alongside them. The change was gradual. We adapted as it evolved.

But we haven't had to watch a big chunk of our skill set become obsolete yet. This time, the timeline is compressed.

Most professionals got rusty since they left the school banks. Did we had to keep sharpening? For most, the skills we built back then, carried us for years. To the point we forgot how good it feels to push ourself. To stay sharp. To keep up a pace that was once familiar.

Remember when T-shaped marketers emerged? Professionals who could write content, create visuals, work with data, enable output across tools. They didn't stay in their lane. They became force multipliers.

I believe we'll see the same pattern. T-shaped operators. Deep expertise in one field, but able to create value across the entire customer journey. The walls between marketing, sales, CS, and data will blur. Not because people change, but value creation inside orgs will.

Now, I can't predict the future. Smart people said the best way to anticipate what's coming is to understand patterns from the past.

Am I wrong to draw these conclusions? Am I just adding to a hype?

Honestly, none of us know yet.

But not doing anything about it, watching the pattern potentially unfold from the sidelines, that makes me feel stuck. The opposite, leaning in, learning, building makes me feel energized. In control of what I believe is ahead of us.

Don't be the typist who settled. Or the one who can't land a new job.
Be the one who remembers how amazing it feels to learn.

By 2030, 70% of the skills required for the average job will have changed.
