I’m writing this with tears in my eyes. Watching the changes, we help people make always makes me tearful. At the start of our blogging session today (which is the last as part of our social selling programme) one of the salespeople said, “I really don’t see the relevance of this.” By the end of the session, it was this person who was the first to publish their blog! And, what a blog it was.
 
This is why Adam and I set up the company. Not to do Linkedin training, nor to be just another marketing agency and not to transform only sales by using social. Here at DLA Ignite, we transform the whole organisation. Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, Internal Comms, Customer Service, all with social.
 
For me, it all started 15 years ago when I joined Twitter (now X)
 
Later, I was part of an ambitious sales transformation which took 4,000 sales people and tried to turn them into social sellers. We made mistakes along the way. We tried LinkedIn training. We tried About/profile writers and we even tried masterclasses but they all failed. Why? It is because, they didn’t create the mindset and habit change that’s vital to become social.
 
After this, there was my best-selling books, “Social Selling - Techniques to Influence Buyers and Changemakers” followed by a second, “Smarketing - How to Achieve Competitive Advantage through Blended Sales and Marketing” (both available on Amazon worldwide).
 
Finally, we a deep desire to transform lives as well as companies.
 
In sales, we transform people every day (through our Social Selling programs). Outside of this, we are also empowering and transforming people in roles across the Enterprise creating the classic, “more for less” scenario. The impact of this means that, “legacy process” competitors may never catch up.
 
So why the tears? To be honest, it doesn’t matter how many people and companies we transform. What matters is seeing people change their mindset and develop. This is very moving for me and all of us in the global team. We get one hell of a kick out of this!

Yet here she is, smiling, laughing, and clearly in a very happy place

What I love about their story is that it didn’t rush

They’d known each other for years

Life took its time

And when the moment was right, something beautiful began

Their relationship is a quiet but powerful reminder that:
✨ Companionship matters
✨ Connection can arrive when you least expect it
✨ And it’s never “too late” for joy

Seeing Mum this happy is something I don’t take for granted

Here’s to love, at every stage of life

When everyone “helps founders,” no one stands out


It’s probably because I’m a CEO, and probably because of the state of the market, that I’ve noticed a huge increase in the number of people who are now self-employed

And almost without exception, they all seem to have the same LinkedIn headline: “I help founders…”

Every week, without fail, I get messages from people who help founders with:

- Sales and marketing / Go-to-market

- Raising money / exiting a business

- Burnout, wellness, imposter syndrome

- Financial independence

- Some form of leadership methodology

Different words, same promise

Without fail I will get 5 connection requests from people providing these services on a weekly basis, as this has happened now for some 6 months, if you provide these services, it's clealry a crowded field for you

And they all say the same thing: they’re unique

Clearly, they’re not, because they look and sound exactly like everyone else

Now, if I actually spoke to one of them, I’m sure they’d explain in great detail how different they are

They might even be the best in the world at what they do

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: as a buyer, I can’t tell the difference

When everyone uses the same language, the same positioning, and the same outreach tactics, it all blurs into noise

So what happens? I ignore it

Not because I don’t need help, but because I can’t distinguish signal from spam

And I suspect I’m not alone

This is exactly how most buyers behave

Here’s the irony

I do know a sales and GTM expert

I do know someone who can help raise money

I do know a burnout and wellbeing expert

I already have access to all of these skills

So when I need help, who do I turn to?

Not the person who sent a generic connection request

Not the person who told me they’re “unique.”

I turn to the person I trust

The person I have a relationship with

The person who’s shown up consistently, added value, and earned credibility over time

Conclusion

If you’re one of the many people “helping founders,” here’s my suggestion: stop sending blank, copy-and-paste connection requests that go nowhere

Stop trying to convince strangers how different you are

Instead, invest your time in building relationships and trust

That’s what actually cuts through the noise and that’s what buyers remember

Why 25 likes beat 1,000 views in B2B sales


In B2B sales, social media is not a broadcast channel
It’s a conversation starter

Yet too many people still judge success by views and impressions, as if LinkedIn were a digital billboard

Big numbers look good on a dashboard, but they rarely move a deal forward

Views are often nothing more than vanity metrics, comforting, but commercially empty

If your goal is revenue, not applause, then lower-volume, high-intent engagement should be the aim

Here’s why

1. Identity Beats Demographics Every Time

The biggest flaw with views is simple: they’re anonymous

A LinkedIn “view” can mean as little as one pixel loading for a fraction of a second

It doesn’t tell you whether someone read your post, understood it, or even noticed it

At best, you might see aggregated data like “CRO, London.” Helpful for ego

Useless for sales

A “like,” on the other hand, has a name attached to it

You know exactly who engaged

You can click through, review their role, their company, their career path, and quickly decide whether they fit your ideal customer profile

A metric has suddenly become a person and people buy, not impressions

2. Content’s Real Job: Building a Bridge to Conversation

In B2B, content isn’t the destination
Conversation is

Twenty likes is not a failure

It’s a gift

That’s twenty identifiable individuals you can realistically engage with

This is where the real value shows up

“Hi Dave, thanks for liking yesterday’s post. We’ve not spoken for ages, fancy a catch-up?”

That message works because it’s contextual

It’s human

And it’s based on something they did, not a cold outreach script

Your content becomes a digital bridge between public insight and private dialogue

That’s social selling in practice

3. The Viral Myth in B2B

Everyone wants to “go viral.”
Very few people stop to ask whether it actually helps

If a post gets 1,000 likes, or 40,000, it becomes impossible to follow up properly

You can’t research every profile

You can’t personalise every message

The opportunity collapses under its own weight

Worse still, viral reach doesn’t equal buying intent

I’ve seen a client generate 6.5 million views and 40,000 likes… and not receive a single inbound enquiry

Because in B2B, nobody buys a complex, career-risking solution because they saw a popular post

They buy because that post eventually led to a conversation with someone they trust

4. B2B Is Not B2C (And Never Will Be)

Views can matter, depending on what you sell

If you’re selling a £29 gadget, high visibility might trigger impulse purchases

But in B2B, the buying question isn’t “what have I got to lose?”
It’s “what happens to my job if this goes wrong?”

High-value, high-risk decisions are made through dialogue, credibility, and trust

Not likes

Not reach

And certainly not virality

I would rather know the names of 25 potential buyers than have 1,000 strangers walk past my shop window without stopping

2. Content is a Bridge, Not a Stage

Many people post content just to post it

They want the applause

But in a professional environment, content has one primary job: to build a bridge to a conversation

If your content isn't opening a door to your buyer, it’s failing

You shouldn't be posting for the sake of activity; you should be posting to create a starting point for a real relationship

3. The Myth of Virality

In B2B, virality is actually one of the worst things that can happen to you

If you get 5,000 likes on a post, you can’t possibly follow them all up

You lose the ability to filter out who is actually interested in your solution and who is just a random passerby

Stop chasing the crowd

When you keep your engagement focused, you can actually manage the follow-up and turn that engagement into revenue

4. B2B is Not B2C

We have to stop importing B2C metrics into a B2B world

The "influencer" model of mass reach doesn't translate to complex sales

In our world, it’s not about how many people saw you,  it’s about which people saw you and what they did next

The Bottom Line: Stop chasing applause

Start using your content to build genuine relationships and spark meaningful conversations.

Why Linkedin is your competitive moat



I recently stumbled across a LinkedIn post titled “Here are the top 3 reasons to use LinkedIn content for growth.” 

While I’m usually on board with the sentiment, I found myself agreeing with the author on a "Meat Loaf" basis: 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, but that final point is a ridiculous 

Here is my take on where the common wisdom gets it right, and where it falls into the trap of wishful thinking

1. The "Brand Awareness" Fallacy

The post claimed that LinkedIn content amplifies growth funnels because "if buyers have heard about you, they’re more likely to respond."

My take: In today’s hyper-noisy digital landscape, the idea that a prospect has "heard of you" just because you post content is an utter fallacy, in fact delusional

Thinking a vague sense of familiarity will suddenly make cold outreach work is a fairy tale

Too many marketers believe in magic, but wishing on a star doesn’t pay the bills, real, targeted strategy does

2. The Moat is Human, Not Social

The second point argued that a social presence is a "competitive moat" because competitors can’t copy it

My take: This is true, but it misses the soul of the matter

A "social presence" sounds like a static asset

Your actual moat isn't a profile page; it’s your insight, trust, and relationships

People don't follow brands or “presences”, they follow people to be educated, to be helped, and because they feel a sense of "friendship" or connection

3. Engagement: Quality Over Quantity

Finally, the post argued that followers and engagement aren't vanity metrics if they align with your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)

My take: Correct, but most people are still looking at the wrong numbers

Having 100,000 impressions is worthless if those people remain anonymous ghosts in the machine

However, if I get 20 likes from the right people, I can actually engage with them

Those aren't just "likes"; those are 20 leads and an immediate pipeline

Conclusion

LinkedIn is a powerful tool, but only if you stop treating it like a megaphone and start treating it like a boardroom

If you focus on building real relationships and turning small-scale engagement into actual conversations, you’ll find the growth everyone else is just wishing for

Navigating the peaks: An equestrian adventure in the Atlas Mountains


The transition from the vibrant, bustling streets of Marrakech to the rugged isolation of the Atlas Mountains is an experience that stays with you

Our journey began with a daunting drive, a true test of nerves in an era before GPS

Navigating unpaved roads in total darkness without a single street light or road sign felt like a leap of faith

In Morocco, seeking directions can be a delicate art; there is a known local ruse where travelers are flagged down under false pretenses, making every roadside encounter a high-stakes decision

Despite the tension, we eventually found our way to the mountain resort, driven by one primary goal: horse riding

The "Dobbin" Philosophy

I am by no means an expert equestrian

In fact, I have a long-standing tradition with the horses I ride

Whether I’m in South America, Europe, or Africa, my horse is invariably named "Dobbin." 

To me, a Dobbin is a horse that lacks the ambition to misbehave, or, quite frankly, the ambition to move at all

This perceived laziness is exactly what makes them "safe" for a casual rider like myself

Trusting the Hooves

As we ascended the steep, rocky terrain of the Atlas range, my anxiety must have been written across my face

Our guide, sensing my unease, offered a reassuring reminder: these horses were born for this landscape

Their hooves are naturally adapted to grip the uneven stone, far more capable than any human or vehicle

However, even a "Dobbin" has its quirks

Any rider knows that you must maintain a level of authority; if a horse senses a lack of leadership, it may test its boundaries

My particular mount had a persistent habit of dropping its head and attempting to roll in the sand, a classic equine maneuver designed to unseat a rider

Throughout the trek, I kept a firm grip and a watchful eye, balancing the guide’s advice to trust the horse with the reality that I still needed to be the boss

Conclusion

Ultimately, horse riding in the Atlas Mountains is a lesson in letting go and taking control all at once

From the nerve-wracking midnight drive to the rhythmic clatter of hooves on ancient stone, it is an adventure that demands respect for the terrain and a steady hand on the reins

How our dog became immortal


Growing up with a father who worked as a sound engineer for the BBC meant that our household was often filled with the magic of television production

While his career spanned many iconic programs, including the legendary Doctor Who, one particular project remains a cherished family memory: the original run of All Creatures Great and Small

Aired between 1978 and 1980, this beloved series brought to life the 1930s and 40s Yorkshire Dales, starring Christopher Timothy as James Herriot and Robert Hardy as the eccentric Siegfried Farnon

Based on the novels by James Herriot, the show aimed for total authenticity, but during production, they hit a minor snag: the BBC’s extensive sound effects library was missing a specific "dog snapping" noise

To solve the problem, my dad turned our home into a makeshift recording studio

He arrived one evening with professional NAGRA Reel-to-Reel tape recorders and high-sensitivity microphones

We lived in the quiet village of Upton Snodsbury, where the local church bell chimed every fifteen minutes

We had to time our "session" perfectly, waiting for the bells to ring and then holding our breath until the very last bit of resonance faded into the night air

Once we had total silence, it was my turn to help

I began throwing a stick for our dog, Meck, while Dad hovered the microphone nearby, capturing the precise, sharp sound of Meck’s jaws snapping shut

It took a few takes to get it just right, but we eventually captured the perfect sound

Conclusion

It might seem like a small detail, but it’s a wonderful feeling to know that Meck’s "performance" is preserved forever in the BBC archives

In a recent blog, Jeremiah Owyang makes a powerful case for companies adopting an AI-first mindset, not just new tools, but entirely new cultures

The world’s top AI startups aren’t succeeding because they’re lucky

They’re succeeding because they are hyper-productive, often boasting extraordinary Revenue Per Employee (RPE)

The real question for the rest of us is: how can any business begin to emulate that level of performance?

Most organisations have now given employees access to AI tools, and if you haven’t, you should

 Early adopters will immediately self-serve, explore, and experiment

But the reality, as decades of coaching and training research shows, is that only 20–30% of employees will develop themselves purely through self-direction

That leaves 70–80% who need structured support, encouragement, and confidence-building before AI becomes part of their daily workflow

This is where culture matters

Creating an AI-first organisation means fostering psychological safety, curiosity, and experimentation

People need to feel comfortable trying, failing, iterating, and improving, because that’s exactly how AI tools develop, and it’s exactly how your people will learn to use them effectively

So how do you actually do it?

Jeremiah outlines a simple, powerful three-step method:

If an AI tool already exists for your problem or goal, adopt it

If it doesn’t exist, build it, even if you’re not technical. Modern AI makes “vibe-coding” possible for anyone

Only if that fails should you hire a human to do the task

And then? Repeat. Relentlessly
This is how an organisation becomes lean, focused, and extraordinarily productive

Pair this mindset with continuous monitoring and coaching on AI usage, helping employees understand how effectively they’re using AI and where they can improve and you’ll accelerate your journey from simply having AI to truly being AI-first

Why it was OK to sleep on the job



There’s an old joke that always stuck with me:

Person 1: “I’ve always wanted to work on the railways.” 

Person 2: “What job did you want?” 

Person 1: “I’d love to be a sleeper.”

As it turns out, I actually managed to live that punchline, though it wasn't on the tracks, but in the rafters of a South London telephone exchange

The Era of "Mystery Bills"

In the early 1980s, I was fresh out of university and working as a commissioning engineer for STC (Standard Telephones & Cables)

It’s hard to imagine now, but back then, when you received a bill from British Telecom (BT), it was just a single, lump sum

There was no itemised list, no duration of calls, and certainly no breakdown of who you’d been talking to

However, the tide was turning

The market had been deregulated, and agile startups like Mercury were nipping at BT’s heels by offering the very call-logging features the giant lacked

My job was to lead the team of wiremen and fitters tasked with dragging BT’s infrastructure (TXE4) into the modern age

The Greenwich Negotiation

Upgrading a telephone exchange was typically a weeks job

These systems were designed to be "fail-safe," meaning we could take specific modules offline for maintenance while the rest of the exchange stayed live

I’d already successfully managed upgrades during daylight hours in Nottingham, Daventry, and Brixton without a hitch

But when we reached Greenwich, the local BT Clerk of Works had a different idea

He insisted the work be done at night

His official reasoning was "safety," but the unofficial reality was clear: working nights meant time-and-a-half for everyone involved

My crew was a bit annoyed at first, it’s a hassle rearranging B&B bookings at the last minute (you sleep during the day), but the prospect of the extra pay quickly sweetened the deal

Clocking Out While Clocking In

Once the shift began and the modules were safely handed over to the technicians, there wasn't much for me to do but supervise

Seeing me hovering, one of my fitters gave me a knowing look and pointed toward the heavy-duty wire racks suspended from the ceiling

"You can just sleep up there," he suggested supportively
