I’m so incredibly proud of you Mom!! I just want to take a moment to highlight something truly special behind this milestone.

My mom, Debra Anzalone, DrPH, RN, CHES, is an Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow, and she personally spearheaded the effort to make Broward County an official Hidden Heroes County. She worked tirelessly to bring this forward, champion caregiver support, and ensure this proclamation truly reflects the needs of military and veteran families.

She also delivered the speech to accept the proclamation, representing thousands of Hidden Heroes with grace, strength, and unwavering dedication.

I’m so proud of her and the work the Elizabeth Dole Foundation is doing to bring visibility, resources, and compassion to the caregivers who carry so much of the unseen weight.

This recognition is more than a title — it’s a promise to stand with the 30,000 military and veteran caregivers in Broward County and a powerful step toward making sure they are supported, understood, and never overlooked.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in making this happen. What an amazing moment for the community, and for all our nation’s Hidden Heroes. 💛

I’m honored to share that #BrowardCounty, Florida, has now been officially recognized as an #ElizabethDoleFoundation #HiddenHeroesCounty!

This designation shines a powerful light on the nearly 30,000 military and veteran caregivers in our community, caregivers whose strength, sacrifice, and resilience so often go unseen.

On Thursday, November 13th, at the #BrowardCountyBoardofCountyCommissioners Meeting, we celebrated this milestone alongside community partners, leaders, and advocates committed to supporting those who care for our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans.

As many of you know, this work is deeply personal. I am a dual caregiver for my husband, retired U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon CAPT Fanancy L. Anzalone, MD, MPH, CPE, who lives with Alzheimer’s Disease, and for our daughter, Tracy, who survived a severe anoxic brain injury from postoperative complications nearly 23 years ago. I understand the overwhelming challenges caregivers face and the vital importance of timely, accessible resources.

Becoming a #HiddenHeroesCounty is more than a proclamation. It is a commitment to identifying caregivers, supporting their mental health and wellness, and ensuring they are connected to services that strengthen families and improve quality of life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, championed this effort, and continues to stand with our military and veteran caregivers. Your support truly matters.

Last night, I had the honor of attending the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Annual Gala as my Mom’s date (Debra Anzalone, DrPH, RN, CHES)— an experience I’ll never forget.

My mom is part of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s 2025 Class of Fellows, and since being accepted in May, this program has changed her life in ways I could never have imagined. She has found a community she didn’t know she was missing: new friends who truly understand the caregiving journey, access to free counseling, a personal branding course, peers she can lean on during tough moments, and a renewed love of learning. She’s traveled to D.C. twice, connected deeply with fellow caregivers, and stepped into her role as a leader and advocate with courage and heart.

One of her proudest moments was working tirelessly to bring forward the Hidden Heroes County proclamation in Broward County — and then delivering the speech to accept it on behalf of thousands of military and Veteran caregivers. She poured her soul into making sure that proclamation reflected the real needs of America’s Hidden Heroes and their families. Watching her speak with such grace, strength, and unwavering commitment was a moment I’ll carry with me forever.

When my Dad retired from the military, our family slowly lost the sense of community that had always been the fabric of our lives as a military family. Last night, sitting beside her, I felt like she finally got that community back — a room full of people who see caregivers, who support them, and who are working every day to make sure they’re not forgotten.

The military and Veteran world is small in the best way. In a room of 1,000 people, I even ran into former colleague and client Dr. Keita Franklin — a reminder of how interconnected this mission truly is. The support in that room wasn’t just financial; it was visible in the tears, the hugs, the smiles, and the shared understanding of what caregivers endure in silence.

I’m incredibly proud of my Mom, not only for applying to become a Dole Fellow, but for embracing every resource, opportunity, and relationship this program offers. She’s only just getting started, and I can’t wait to see the impact she’ll continue to make.

Here’s to the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, to America’s military and Veteran caregivers, and to the people who show up for them every single day.
