So let's take a breath, we're still somewhere between the Windows 95 and Windows 98SE time of AI things. Maybe Windows NT4.1. It's still super important to focus on Data First!

...with the Teams PTSD ring tone blaring away.

It's impossible to pay down Interest on the Technical Debt. You need to start paying down the debt. The modern data engineering + data world is chasing AI ghosts, and moving so fast that one slip, one typo, one rogue keystroke…can turn a "normal" Tuesday into a career-regrettable event and an 8am emergency war room.

I air quote "normal" because the operational definition of this is fluid and elusive in 2025. Am I wrong? I know I'm right, but still, we must laugh. 

I always say, turning a frown upside down, if even for a moment, pays huge dividends.

We laugh at this stuff because humor is literally how we stay sane in this industry. Or at least that's my most frequent script that I fill and follow. The realty is, nothing is "quick" anymore. Too many of my previously tight and swift atomic habits are now tangled process chains that make even the simplest of asks a side quest that I need to get hydrated for, and maybe pack a snack. 

Behind every “quick deploy” is someone who hasn’t slept right in 3 days, trying to keep 14 parallel priorities alive, while Slack, JIRA, ADO, Teams, and 3 projects are all fighting for attention at the same time. To say nothing about the people under your charge that matter most.

Data and software don’t fail alone. But Humans break under the weight long before the database does. As someone who has been online since 1990, can still type at 90+ WPM, read many things at 500+ WPM, still do just about anything I've ever done in IT in the past 30 years even faster, now with 5 computers around me and 3 solid AIs at my beck and call — 2025 has crushed me, time and time again.  Like no other trip around the sun before.  

So, I know the struggle is so real. 
So, slow down.

Shipping is important. ->YES!
Customer success is paramount. -> FOR SURE!
Failure is not an option. -> OK, HECK YEAH!

But Breathe. Align. 
Protect your people. Protect your outcomes. 
Protect your SELF.  

Trust is non-negotiable.
Health isn't forever renewable.
Your family, friends, community, need you always.

That’s the real Data Ninja code.

I stepped out for a Humanizing Moment in the wild.
Cafe Galata opened up in home town Guelph!
Selcuk & Alper served me the best Turkish ☕️!

Week 47 crushed my soul and almost (literally) broke my back, but in addition to being #𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, I, and #𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗳𝘂𝘀, must stay strong and be #𝘂𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. I powered through my still privileged #𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 week, but it was un vie beaucoup dur, muy duro, muito difícil, but I powered through it all. 

I had to step out today, to visit our newest community coffee shop - a Turkish delight!

Left to right are Alper Esat, Selcuk Demiriz, Enes Bilgesu and Zeynep Usak. Enes and Selcuk met eight years ago in Canada. They both have Turkish roots so opening Cafe Galata and serving Turkish coffee and pastries has been a last two years passion in the making.  

Enes calls Turkish coffee, espresso on steroids.  Selcuk and his co-owner want to create a place for people to make memories over coffee. They have succeeded - the inside of this place is welcoming and calming. Less than 5 minutes away from the #DataNinja lair, I will do an afternoon work-away-from-home pitstop this coming Week 48. 

It was a heck of a week, with MIN(LINKEDIN) but MAX(HUMANIZING_MOMENTS) - even a couple of humbling ones, albeit factually clouded ones.

Who Are We? 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗻.
Why are we here? 𝗧𝗼 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱, 𝗙𝗶𝘅, 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 - 𝗧𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.
What Matters Most? The answer, always, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

I truly am, a Geek With Empathy, and a sucker for a Humanizing story. It's how I was shaped and built, and there's no tear down happening. Nate Bartgaze often says "Nobody Knows", but Jeremy Adamson knows. He wrote the Geeks With Empathy book, after all.

On this Sunday afternoon when your #DataNinja is still, sick as a pack of dogs, with so much needed to get built and done in the next 72 hours, and closing out a rough week 45 where my most valued customers felt the most visceral of expectations unmet, I was serendipitously inspired and reminded, respectively through LinkedIn and Google Syniti memories, that #PeopleMatterMost. 

𝟭. Thanks to Steph Loke for the amazing, first! While there is a lot wrong and that should be better about this LinkedIn platform, it remains the undisputed most "humanizing" social platform for people driven with the ambition to Matter, and Succeed. Zach Wilson, who continues to surprise me with his 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆, figured this out long ago.

FWIW, on my sickly Friday night, while Susan Walsh was living her best party life (which makes me happy), and I was lying in bed, pretty miserable, I listened to the entirety of the 1:11:36 LinkedIn live recording of 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗣𝗖. Choosing between the next Stanford AI lecture and Zach & Friends was a "no brainer". Appropriate because my brain was truly AWOL, but my human heart was feasting. 

𝟮. Google Memories reminded me of this 3 year anniversary event, in Chicago, as a modern Data Team of the ages working on delivering Lactalis Group SAP S/4HANA success, enjoyed a REAL feast—of both Indian cuisine, and low-key data hero meet up.  What do I remember about this night? Counter-Clockwise, back left to right:

Victor Alcaide was doing the Dos Equis dude impression, believing he really was the most interesting man in the world, while probably not even at this table.

Vasu Parikh always smiling because he's so fun, adamant that he would not drink, not to be swayed by the constant "noise" to his left about how great the 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 was.

🥷Pedro Cardoso, surprisingly without an 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱, and I can't remember what we all had in our cups, but it couldn't be great because they look untouched. Who remembers?

Sidney Sainsbury, always with the great hair, dammit. Even better than mine.

Uma Boga, so glad he was in a city he didn't live in, because I know we collectively always embarrassed him, and the idea of being seen in public with us was I am sure a jump scare. I told him I wouldn't post this pic on LinkedIn - and I didn't, until now! 🤣

I recently started workshopping this so simple, common-sense approach to help my colleagues, friends, family, and those I meet in my community have healthier relationships with AI.  

You see whether any one in your audience chooses to swipe left or right on #AI, baselining this foundational understanding should not enrage or enflame anyone. 

AI isn’t “Artificial Intelligence.” It’s 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Or better yet, 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲—or whatever you call it, it doesn't matter. It's just, not, Intelligent.

The tech bros keep dressing it up like it's the next superior species in evolution but that's 100% bull 💩. I'm tired of running into offensive ads from Replika offering a male gaze "fantasy" of a 24/7 sycophantic girlfriend to serve their every whim and bidding. It sickens me that we are suggesting this is what the "perfect mate" is meant to be.

The truth is, AI is an awesome tool, and perhaps mankind's most powerful tool ever created. But the indisputable truth is that it is still a 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭. It's a tool that can be wielded to do great good but also do terrible damage.  

The societal and environment damage is being shrugged of as a "cost of doing business", but what business exactly? Who is doing the math on this? Why is every (ahem male) tech billionaire seemingly pursuing the same end goal, completely independently and wastefully? Where is the governance? (that's clearly a rhetorical question).

𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 (𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿) 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:  
🥷Humans invented tools.
🥷Then we invented tools that could invent other tools.
🥷That’s the real intelligence flex.
🥷Meta before “Meta” even existed. Even before the GOAT SCOTT!

So let’s stop being tools ourselves, and remind others to not try to transform themselves into a TOOL. 

A fool with a tool was always, and will always be, still a fool. Intelligence only deserves a mention in the #HI acronym and belly buttons. So next time you need the answer to a question like "Is this mushroom edible", ask someone with actual intelligence and domain expertise worth trusting.

I had a human conversation this week and it was soo 🔥!
I had lots of them, TBH. But this one stood da Heck Out!
I'll share what 15yr ago me knew and still knows. 🫵

The conversation started like most customer leadership calls do. The usual suspects of strategy, tech decisions, business outcome imperatives, known for long but still unsolved data problems playing starring roles. 

Then came the classic “fix this by yesterday” flare and the moment leaders lead and commit to dealing with data debt demons and need a 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 approach to begin, well before the project even starts. 

But that was just the conversation starter. The discussion turned to humanizing topics of 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 — the stuff that actually dictates and decides who wins.

And it reminded me of something 15-years-ago me already knew walking through that Boston airport, heading to my BackOffice Associates recruitment weekend. 

A career marking event that I had serendipitously stumbled upon, set in motion on an earlier Friday night, with a glass of (Portuguese equivalent Cab) in hand, while thumbing through Monster.com with the other. 

🥷 Your word is your real résumé.
🥷 Your character is your competitive edge.
🥷 Trust is your most valuable currency. 
🥷 Reputation is the compound interest that never stops paying.

If you want to lead, really lead, then just LEAD. 
Start and End, there. Everything else is just execution.

And yeah, People Matter Most is my most followed and repeated hash tag line. But while the normal usage of hash tags is to artificially extend a post's reach, my intentional use of the hashy tag is humanizing and human real.

For those who choose to focus and complain about what LinkedIn or anything anywhere, doesn't do well and what others do to make it suck more, I challenge you to think differently. 

I guarantee you that if you focus your attention on GIVING value, ENABLING outcomes, SHOWING value, and RAISING yourself and others around you, that:

1. Great things WILL happen.
2. These things can be done ANYWHERE, even on the most enshittified of platforms.  
3. Your best will always be seen, and also, be yet to come

It's no coincidence we are seeing AI and Data being added to non-IT Marketing & Consulting roles. If Data & ITHeroes are MIA, Other Super Heroes emerge.

My #IT, #Techie, and #DataNinja nation friends — while so many are so worried that #AI is coming to take your jobs, your biggest worry should be who is coming for the #Data and #IT privileged technology jobs you already have, but have been doing kinda poorly.

It's not a reflection of your intelligence, passion, efficiency, or lack of critical thinking.

It's 100% an issue of, for so very, very, long, asking the wrong questions, not answering the right questions, and gaslighting our customers to believe they are the ones that need changing.  
Funny thing is, you may just be getting what you all wished for, but may also learn and live to regret it. They are changing into better versions of themselves, and the better versions of you that everyone is tired waiting for.

For some of you, that new bus is finally starting to leave the station. For too many of you, once you get to your assigned "stops", you might find that folks have given up waiting and just decided to walk the "journey route" on their own.

Q4 has arrived, so it's time for the 🥷MVP reading list.
Each of these was chosen with Humanizing Intent.
Human Intelligence+Community = 🥷Q4 themes.

I'm not going ask you to influence the reading sequence of these.  My recently diagnosed neurodivergent brain can't possible pick just one, so it would be a senseless ask. I don't make senseless asks. Few things irk me more than "check a box" exercises, masquerading as something valuable. 𝙄𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤𝙤? 𝙈𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚?

What you can help me with is which should be (officially and properly) reviewed FIRST? So in bottom up, but also no particular order:

1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽, recommended by David Robson himself, a 🥷 follow. I've had it in my backlog for a while. Seems like the right (2025) time to absorb.

2. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗪𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗿, by @Peter Pomerantsev, a senior fellow at John Hopkins, recommended by a Community loving, and close friend of a 🥷 follow. I won't mention their name without permission, but I love History, and very much believe we are (all) in an Information War of never seen before proportions. Also, a timely EOY read, as we go into 2026, for all sides of the Community Aisles.

3. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗜𝗻 𝗔 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲, by the MAD GOAT we all know and respect, Merrill Albert. I've "pecked-read" a lot of it, but need to behave and read it left->right like an adult, and not an impatient child. This was a must be written, and must be read piece for all reasons aforementioned.

4. 𝗔𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, by Erza Klein, Derek Thompson, I feel like 20+ people have talked about this, enough that I finally picked it up at a small curated book store in Toronto, Little Italy proper. 𝙃𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙩? 𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙩? 𝙃𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙄𝙩? 𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨?

5. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆, by the Humanizing Musical GOAT of all time, Tiankai Feng (who I can no longer prompt without getting some "Thanks In Advance..." result? WTH?) I've been waiting for this "for a while", and it comes with a personal endorsement from moi inside, so no need to say more, except if you don't already own it, go get yourself one.

6. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁, by the over-hyped Malcolm Gladwell, as I loved his books until I suddenly liked them less, but heard some not bad things about this one, so am giving him another chance. 𝙄𝙛 𝙄'𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝟬𝟬𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣, 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬. 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬.
   
7. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, by a talented colleague of mine, Frank Gundlich where a story-based approach about embedding data thinking into leadership behaviour, to stop the distraction of shiny things. I mean, it's a work of complete "science fiction" - I don't think anyone of us can relate to this?

I gotta say, it's getting hard to spot the AI slop out there.
That smile is distracting - but check the red ⭕️...

Those unnatural light reflects and too perfect sheen...so easy to pick these fakes out if you just pay attention to the details.


One of my latest double bell valued follows Michele Kamenar was sharing this gem of a photo, and I thought #DataNinja nation would appreciate the brain muscle workout. I mean the NYT crossword and Wordle sets are lit, but picking this AI slop apart is getting to be like rocket science.

I also gotta say, her feet are georgeous. She must do crazy Yoga to be able to pull this feat off. I can't even see where she's got her hands - this one's fire, I bet she's on the Insta. And that Latte is magical. 

Mad skills this one....just MAD. Michele's 🔥 fire too. Or does she work for Appfire - I remember 🔥, so check out her profile. She's not my typical techie industry follow but she maee me laugh, and has MAD content skills and is a brand #StoryTeller, so she's now part of the #Dataninja family. She has no idea what she's signed up for...without signing up for anything at all.
