How the railways will fix the future by Gareth Dennis  

This is the book I didn’t know I was longing for. I love the railways, and for precisely this reason: it has EVERYTHING to offer society if only we dare to dream boldly and truly value it as the transformative force it is. 

Gareth Dennis, a railway engineer with a sharp eye, makes a compelling case in this book: railways literally hold radical and straightforward answers to our biggest struggles — climate change, inequality, democratic power, labour rights, development, broader societal progress — if only we imagine and invest accordingly in its infrastructure and its people. 

Dennis draws on clear, global comparisons of political choices and their real-world consequences, showing how short-term thinking and liberalisation have stifled progress in too many places. Rather than dancing around the edges of the world we see today, in his book Dennis urges a long-term vision to shift transport decisively toward rail: massive network expansion, reliable maintenance, full electrification, universal accessibility, and strong public ownership.

The vision is optimistic and grounded in hard engineering facts. It shows how railways can and should serve as a lens for building a more sustainable, equitable, and democratic future. But the call is urgent: the time to act is now! In the meantime the UK is coming back from liberalisation as we speak. 

If you want to know more about how rail should be central to progressive politics (yet notice how often it’s still sidelined), this book will ignite something in you. Highly recommended… for everyone.
