I might have lost a good contract by being honest. 

We were 20 minutes into the discovery call. The project seemed perfect (- and exactly my wheelhouse, good budget, timeline, not so big of a team). Then she asked: ‘And you’re available through Q2?’
I told her that I’m expecting a baby in May and will be taking maternity leave. But I can absolutely get this project completed by mid-April, or we can discuss a plan that works around my leave.

Most people do not know the invisible weight between client interactions a small service provider (like me) carries. 

I am not a super successful-cashing in $10k a month-waking up with cold showers-filled pipeline & waitlist sorta entrepreneur (yet). 

I have my moments of overanalysis, my spirals, my imposter syndrome, my doubts and fears - sometimes all at once - at 2 am - especially when a client goes quiet.

Just last week I wrote content for an almost new client, sent it to her first thing in the morning - super excited for it to be on her LinkedIn and see it perform. 

She posted something entirely  different.
No acknowledgement. 
No explanation.

And then she went quiet on WhatsApp.


And that was enough for my brain to start writing a whole novel.🥲

What did I do wrong?
Does she not trust my work? 
Is she unhappy with me? 
Am I about to lose this client?
100 scenarios & 500 questions.

By evening I had a fully constructed crisis. (Iykyk)


But 4 years with this thing called entrepreneurship, I have taught myself a few things that help me get back to reality when my brain is conjuring up the worst possible scenarios.

Sat 15 minutes in silence.

Went over our previous interactions.

Tried to separate the facts from the story I was telling myself.

And then tried naming what I was feeling - the discomfort - which wasn’t even the red flag.

It was care. 
I cared about the work. 
I cared about our relationship. 
I cared about her business. 
I cared about her LinkedIn presence. 

I reminded myself that it’s not weakness -  thats the reason clients keep working with me.

This is the part nobody puts in their ‘day in the life’ content I guess 😅

The mental labour. 
The 2 am spirals. 
The self-talk that isn’t always kind.
The recalibrating before you show up.

This is just what it looks like to run a business on your own.

And I’m still learning to carry it a little lighter.

'Know your customer' is terrible advice.
Especially on LinkedIn.

Focus your energy on knowing the TOP buyers.

Most coaches and consultants waste time trying to understand everyone who might possibly buy from them. It results in generic content that speaks to no one (because it tries to speak to everyone ).

Instead identify your best buyers. 
Not average buyers. 
Not aspirational buyers. 
Not the ones that 'could' buy.

Your actual best buyers. The ones who:
→ pay premium prices without endless negotiation
→ implement what you recommend
→ refer others like themselves
→ renew or buy again
→ are a pleasure to work with

Once you know who these people are, go deep with:
- Sales call transcripts. 
- Customer interviews. 
- Support tickets from your best clients.

...and extract the exact language they use, the triggers that pushed them to buy, their fears and the objections that almost stopped them.
