Spencer Mahoney

I’m a husband, dad of two, ultramarathoner, and brand builder. I currently lead operations and marketing at Atomic Coffee Roasters and help grow Atomic Black, our coffee liqueur brand.

At Atomic Coffee Roasters, a family-run, second-generation business, I oversee everything from DTC growth and brand strategy to production and operations. We roast specialty-grade coffee at our Peabody facility and produce cold brew at our Danvers site. You’ll find our coffee in over 200 cafes and restaurants, 500 grocery stores across New England, and online at DrinkAtomic.com.

I’m also the co-founder of Atomic Black, where I focus on shaping the brand, driving creative strategy, and building awareness through content, partnerships, and storytelling.

What drives me is building thoughtful, scalable systems, telling stories that resonate, and connecting the puzzle pieces required to grow a business.

VP of Operations

Every espresso drink is the same drink.

Espresso + milk. That's it.

The only difference is how much.

Espresso: no milk.

Macchiato: dot of milk.

Cortado: equal parts.

Cappuccino: more milk than you think.

Latte: mostly milk.

Mocha: adult hot chocolate.

Flat White: milk with an Australian accent.

Americano: no milk, but water has entered the chat.

Anything I missed?

I've been putting handwritten notes in customer orders.

Easy marketing win.

Last month, I wrote 5 notes to people who ordered after connecting with me on LinkedIn.

Just a quick "hey, thanks for the order, appreciate your support."

3 of them posted about it.

Multiple people have brought it up to me in person.

The whole thing took maybe 10 minutes!

Weekend mornings I make two pour-overs at the same time.

One for me, one for my wife.

And I do a bit of a shuffling act with one scale 😅

Here's the trick:
 
I pour the first one to 100g, take it off the scale. Put the second one on, tare it, pour to 100g, take it off.
 
Back to the first cup. Tare. Pour again. Then the second cup. Tare. Pour again.
 
Same pours every time. Taring resets the count so I always know exactly where each one is at.
 
Two mugs ready at the same time. No second scale needed.
 
What does your weekend coffee routine look like?

"I like strong coffee."

What does that mean?

I hear this often, and almost nobody means the same thing.

Some people mean dark roast.

Some people mean more caffeine.

Some people mean a bolder flavor.

Some people mean a higher coffee-to-water ratio.

All completely different things.

The word "strong" has two actual definitions:

Concentrated (more coffee, less water) and intense flavor (dark, bold, full-bodied)

Neither is wrong. But they lead to very different cups.

That's how the espresso martini was born.

In the 1980s, a customer in London approached bartender Dick Bradsell with that request.

He combined vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, and sugar syrup.

Now it's one of the most-ordered cocktails in the world.
