Got a text from my cousin last month asking if I knew anyone good for bathroom renovations.

I immediately thought of this guy who did my parents' house like 8 years ago. Absolutely incredible work. Fair prices. Zero drama!!.

So I sent his name over.

Ten minutes later: "Are you sure he's still in business? Can't find anything recent about him online."

I was like... yeah? Pretty sure?

But then I looked him up myself.
And honestly? I got why she was asking.
His website looked frozen in 2016.
His Facebook page's last post was from 2019.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing that showed he was still actively taking projects.

I KNOW he's still working.
Because I've driven past houses with his company truck in the driveway.

But if I didn't know that? If I was just someone who got his name and tried to verify he's legit?

I'd probably assume he retired or went out of business.

My cousin ended up going with someone else.

Because their Instagram had a kitchen they finished last month.
And that felt... safer.

This contractor didn't lose that job because his work isn't good anymore.
He lost it because he LOOKS like he's not around anymore.

And when you only need someone like this once every 10 years, you're not going to take a gamble on "maybe they're still in business?”.

You're going with whoever looks active and reliable right now.

Even if they're half as experienced.

Makes you wonder how many businesses are losing opportunities simply because their online presence accidentally suggests they closed shop.

Not asking anyone to become an influencer.
But maybe just... update SOMETHING every couple years?

So people don't have to play detective to figure out if you still exist.

People ask me all the time: "What do you actually DO?"

Fair question.

The boring answer: I help people fix the gap between who they are and how they show up online.

The real answer: I spend my days having conversations with incredibly talented people who are somehow invisible to the exact clients who need them.

And it drives me slightly insane.
Because I'll meet someone who's been doing brilliant work for 15 years, and when I look them up? Nothing. Ghost town. Outdated everything.

So we fix it. Not by making them someone they're not. Just by making who they already ARE actually visible.

The best part of my job? That moment when a client texts me: "Someone just reached out who's EXACTLY the type of person I want to work with."

The worst part? Knowing how many amazing businesses are losing opportunities simply because they look like they stopped trying.

Because 47 other people did the exact same thing this week. 

So now the game is different.

You need to answer a harder question: 
why should anyone remember you specifically?

And that’s where most people fall apart. Because they think visibility is the same as having something to say.

Spoiler: it’s not.

Here’s what actually moves the needle:

Redesign your reputation.
Most people spend all their time on the CV. The ones who win dedicate their time to the new version, social media. 

Build a founder narrative.
What you believe. 
Why you lead the way you do. 
The moment that changed how you see business. This is the bit that makes someone click “follow” because they want to see what you do next. (Its also greaat for the company) 

Establish a leadership style.
Generic gets ignored. Always. 
Your voice, your perspective, the way you break down an idea- that’s what makes someone stop scrolling. 
People follow clarity wrapped in personality.

Create momentum.
Posting once is a statement. Posting consistently with a point of view is a movement. The MDs who own their space show up when they’ve got nothing to sell. 

That’s when trust gets built. But a lot are too scared to start there…

The best of the best understood something critical: 

Presence isn’t built in a single post. It compounds over weeks. Months. Years. (Yup)
That’s the game now.

Meanwhile, someone who started last Tuesday is getting your business because they posted a selfie with a laptop (it works lol)

Look im not saying you need to dance on TikTok or 
whatever..
I’m saying: your expertise is literally rotting in silence while mediocre-but-visible people eat your lunch.

You’ve got a decade of receipts. 
Client wins. 
Problems solved. 

The kind of street cred that can’t be faked

Just… put it somewhere people can see it?

One post about what you actually do.

One “hey we’re still here and we’re still great” moment.

One reminder that you exist. (To start with)
That’s it. 

You just need to stop letting your silence look like you retired.

Because right now, your track record is losing to someone else’s consistency.

And honestly thats just sad for everyone involved.
P.S. If you’ve been “too busy doing the actual work” to tell anyone about the actual work… same. But also, fix it. People can’t hire ghosts.
(Even really qualified ones.)

Nobody told you the brand comes with the job, did they?

Enter the new Managing Director.
They have the strategy.
The vision.
The “here’s how we’re going to turn this thing around” plan that got you hired.

Cool, cool, cool.

But here’s the plot twist literally nobody mentions in the job description:

Your company’s brand is basically a museum exhibit of the previous era.

And museums are great for learning about history.

Not so great for making people believe you’re building the future.

We’re talking:
- Website copy that sounds like it was written by a very tired consultant in 2020
- Social media that posts once a month (on a Tuesday) (about nothing)
- A visual identity that screams “we peaked and then stopped”

And look, we get it.
You’ve got 847 other things to do.

Branding probably feels like item #492 on the priority list.

But here’s why it should maybe move up:

When your brand doesn’t evolve, people assume YOU haven’t either.

They scroll past your company and their brain goes:

“Oh yeah, them. Still doing that thing they’ve always done.”

Even if you’re literally revolutionising everything internally.

Your customers can’t see inside your strategy docs.

They can only see what you show them.

And right now you’re showing them a brand that forgot to get the memo about the new leadership.

Start giving something that signals:
“Different person driving. Different destination ahead.”

Refreshed messaging.

Updated visuals that don’t look scared of color.

A story that sounds like it’s coming from someone who actually works there in 2025.

Because leading a transformation nobody can see is just… exhausting for everyone.

Sorry but can we put a spotlight on introverts in business for once?

I dont know i just feel like when they finally speak, it’s usually the most interesting thing anyone’s said all day.

They’re not performing. 
They’re not filling silence for the sake of it. They’re just… present. 

Waiting until they actually have something worth saying.

And honestly thats how the best established brands used to operate too.

Its just a shame social media messed up their rhythm. 

The internet turned business into a personality contest. 

And suddenly, if you weren’t posting daily selfies with motivational quotes or doing dances to sell your SaaS product, you were invisible.

So a lot of great companies … the ones with actual substance, decades of credibility, products people still swear by just… stepped back.

Pretty sure its because the new rules felt exhausting. 
Performative. 
Not them.

The same thing that makes introverts interesting is what makes legacy brands valuable , they don’t waste your time.

They’re not loud. 

But they’re consistent. 
Thoughtful.

If you’ve built something meaningful, you don’t need to become an extrovert to stay relevant. 

You don’t need gimmicks or viral stuff or a rebrand that erases who you are.

You just need to show up as yourself clearly, consistently, confidently and in the spaces where people are actually looking.

Here's the difference between people who get tons of referrals and people who don't:
One sentence.

"Need good video? Call David."
"Emails a disaster? Talk to Mike."
"Want to fix your online presence? Hit up Sarah."

Clean. Clear. Easy.

Now compare that to:
"Oh, you should talk to... what's their name... they do consulting but like, strategic advisory work? Around growth and operations I think? Or maybe it's more process optimization? Honestly just check their LinkedIn."

Which one are you?

If someone can't explain what you do in ONE BREATH, they probably won't refer you at all.

Because it's too much mental effort.

And people take the path of least resistance.
They refer the person they can describe quickly and confidently.

Not the person who "does a lot of things" or "it's complicated."

Here's the good news:
This is fixable.

And honestly? Your online presence is the easiest place to fix it.

When someone can find you and INSTANTLY understand:
What you do
Who you help
What problem you solve

That one sentence referral practically writes itself.

But if your LinkedIn sounds like a job description and your website lists 47 services?

Even your biggest fans won't know how to explain you.

So the question isn't just "what do I do?"
It's: "Can someone look me up and explain what I do in five seconds?"

Because that five-second clarity is what turns happy clients into your best salespeople.

Real Q: If someone Googled you right now, could they summarise what you do in one sentence? Or would they be confused?

I held onto someone in my business way longer than I should have
Deep down, I knew it wasn't working.

But I kept thinking: 
"Maybe it'll improve. Maybe I'm being too critical. Maybe I just need to try things differently."

Months went by like this.
And the whole time, I was stuck managing a situation instead of actually moving forward.
When I finally made the change - the one I'd been avoiding - everything changed.

Not overnight. But steadily.

Suddenly there was room to breathe. Space to grow. Energy for things that actually mattered.

And I realised: holding on wasn't helping anyone.
Not them. Not me. Not the business.
It was just keeping everyone stuck.

An important lesson i learned from this was: 
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is make the call you've been avoiding.

Not harshly. Just honestly.

Because staying in something that's not working doesn't protect anyone.
It just delays what needs to happen while everyone struggles.

I wish I'd been braver sooner.
Would've saved us both a lot of time and stress.

If you're holding onto something because letting go feels scarier than staying stuck...
I get it. I really do.

But also: letting go might be the thing that finally lets you move forward.
For everyone involved.

You only get ONE first impression with someone.
But that first impression happens MULTIPLE times.

When they hear about you from someone else.
When they Google you.
When they look at your LinkedIn.
When they land on your website.
When they finally meet you.

Most people? Those versions don't line up.
And every time there's a mismatch, trust drops a little.

"Oh, I thought they'd be more..."
"Hmm, this is different than their website made it seem..."
"They're actually way more [relaxed/serious/funny] than I expected..."

None of those are dealbreakers on their own.

But they ADD UP.

And by the time you're asking for the sale? The trust isn't quite there.

Here's what changes everything:
When every version of you reinforces the same impression.

Same tone. Same energy. Same values.
Referral → Google search → LinkedIn → Website → First call → All match.

No surprises. No disconnects. No "hmm, interesting..."

Just: "Yep, this is exactly who I thought I was getting. Where do I sign?"

That's what reputation design actually does.
It doesn't make you look more impressive.
It makes you feel MORE TRUSTWORTHY.

Because everything aligns.

And alignment is what closes deals.

Quick question: How many versions of you exist online right now? And do they all tell the same story?

"I don't want to post too often and look like one of those content creators."
You think that way because you're in the wrong place.

Seeing everyone tell you to post about thought leadership stuff with no other strategy in place and get inspo from the top 1%...lol.

Nobody wants to be the person who's always... trying too hard.

But when you're in the right place, you realise:
You arent trying to be a content creator.
You're focusing on reputation maintenance + growth in a digital world.
In a world where everyone Googles before they buy, staying visible isn't a 'content creation addition'.

It's just part of doing business. Hard to accept, i know.

You're not trying to become an influencer. You're not chasing likes.
You're just making sure that when someone hears about you and goes to check you out, they find evidence that you are great at what you do and you're the one they want to do the thing with. 

Thats it.
HOW you do that is where experts come in because there is psychology + marketing attached to what makes this successful. 

Its funny because the people who refuse to do this out of pride...
They're usually the ones playing catch-up later.
Wondering why less experienced people are getting the calls they should be getting.
Not because those people are better. Because they weren't too proud to show up.

So yeah. If staying quiet feels more comfortable than staying visible...
That's fine. It's your choice.

Just know that choice has a cost.
And that cost is usually way more uncomfortable than just posting would've been.

Your call.

Something I didn't fully understand until it happened:
People notice who you work with and make assumptions about you based on them.

I had a situation where I worked with someone whose approach didn't align with mine.

At the time, I justified it: "The work is solid. That's what matters."
But looking back, other people noticed. And drew conclusions.
About my standards. My judgment. What I was willing to accept.

And honestly i can't blame them.

Because who you associate with sends a signal about what you value.
It affects more than just you. It affects your other relationships. Your reputation. How people perceive you.

Now when I'm considering working with someone, I think about:
"Would I be comfortable having my best clients know I work with this person?"
Not just "are they good at what they do?" - that's baseline.
But: "Do they operate in a way I respect? Do our values actually align?"

If the answer isn't a clear yes, I pass.

Even if it means turning down good work.
Because protecting your reputation isn't just about what you do.
It's about who you're connected to while you're doing it.

And sometimes the smartest business decision is saying no to work that doesn't feel right.
Even when it's hard.

Just learned that one the long way.
