My business success came to me very early. I started my very own lawn mowing round at 7 years old. I’d present myself at someone’s front door, dressed in my best, with a cheeky glint in my eye and a winning smile, and offer to mow their lawns. Even though it was a simple lawn mowing venture, I presented a professional image that I knew would appeal to the older generation – which of course they loved enabling me to grow a very successful business.

After owning my own business for fourteen years, I’ve worked as a coach for many corporates, a mentor for entrepreneurs and a marketing coach for small business owners. Over the years I’ve built a unique understanding of “you” as a business owner and the support you need to deal with mindset blocks. I also understand your market, the people you want to connect with. I love getting inside their heads and hearts, to uncover what you’ll need to successfully market to each individual to create a profit like no other. And I do it in the most simple, smart way I can, with no fluff, no jargon, just “amazing” results.

To be honest, as a coach I do wear many hats and that’s what makes me unique within the coaching industry. This video is a perfect example of what’s wrong with most coaching.

Look closely.

Nothing in this image is what it first appears to be.

The floor isn’t the floor.

The wall isn’t the wall.

Up isn’t up.

And the people who look like they’re “defying gravity”… aren’t.

It’s an illusion created by perspective.

And so is a lot of coaching.

On LinkedIn, you’ll see:
- Coaches “crushing it”
- Overnight success stories
- 10x growth screenshots
- Perfect morning routines
- Million-dollar frameworks

It all looks impressive.

But change the angle… and the story changes.

Many business owners are hanging upside down, trying to copy strategies that only work from a certain perspective.

They’re told:

“Scale fast.”

“Hire quickly.”

“Run ads.”

“Automate everything.”

“Charge more.”

Yet no one asks:

Is your foundation actually level?

Because when your sales process is weak, your messaging unclear, and your leadership inconsistent, growth doesn’t fix it.

It magnifies it.

The coaching industry has mastered the art of staging the room.

Good lighting.

Confident poses.

Big claims.

But real coaching isn’t about illusion.

It’s about correcting perspective.

It’s about turning the room the right way up.

😊 The relationship you have with yourself is the foundation for everything else in your life.

A few years ago, I found myself stuck in a cycle of burnout.

I was working long hours, pushing hard, and always putting everyone else’s needs before my own.

From the outside, everything looked great. But inside, I was running on empty.

It wasn’t until I took a real step back that I realised:

The way I was treating myself, ignoring rest, brushing off my own feelings, was setting the tone for how others treated me too.

Once I made the decision to prioritise the relationship with myself, by setting boundaries, practicing self-respect, and celebrating my own wins, everything started to change.

I became a better leader, a better partner, a better friend.

The truth is:

If you don’t respect yourself, it’s hard to expect others to.

😊 How to Get Someone to Smile 

Last week, I shared how I try to compliment at least one person every day. It’s a small habit, but it’s had a big impact, not just on others, but on me too.

Here’s the truth: getting someone to smile doesn’t require money, status, or a grand gesture. It just requires presence.

Here’s what I’ve learned works:

😊 Notice something good about them.

It could be their effort, attitude, creativity, or even just how they handled a tough moment.

😊 Say it out loud.

Don’t keep it to yourself. A genuine compliment or word of encouragement can light up someone’s whole day.

😊 Be specific.

“Great job today” is nice. But “I really admired how you led that meeting, calm, clear, and confident” is unforgettable.

😊 Smile first.

A warm smile is contagious. Lead with it, and most people will naturally mirror it back.

😊 Be present.

Put your phone down, look them in the eye, and show them they matter.

We’re all carrying more than we show. A kind word, a small compliment, or a sincere smile might be the brightest moment in someone’s day.

So here’s your challenge:

Try making one person smile today, on purpose.

BEWARE OF SMARTPHONE ZOMBIES.

I saw this sign and laughed.

Then I realised… it’s not about pedestrians.

It’s about business owners.

Every week I sit with smart, capable, driven people who are stuck.

Not because they lack skill.
Not because they lack opportunity.
But because they’re distracted.

Scrolling.
Consuming.
Watching other people win.
Reading about strategies they’ll never implement.

Busy… but not productive.

Here’s the controversial part:

Most business owners don’t have a strategy problem.

They have a discipline problem.

They say they want growth, but they won’t put the phone down long enough to make the sales calls.

They say they want scale, but they’re reacting to notifications instead of leading their team.

They say they want freedom, but they’re addicted to noise.

You can’t build a premium business with a distracted mind.

Coaching isn’t about motivation.
It’s about interruption.

I interrupt patterns.
I challenge excuses.
I replace distraction with direction.

The businesses that grow aren’t the smartest.

They’re the most focused.

Put the phone down.
Pick the hard task.
Have the uncomfortable conversation.
Make the offer.
Follow up again.

Stop consuming.
Start executing.

Standing almost 1,800 metres above sea level in Victoria’s High Country, I was reminded why I love leadership.

A few of us took the 4WDs up for a getaway with mates. Steep tracks. Big climbs. Wide open sky. Up here, you genuinely feel on top of the world. In winter, this exact spot would be buried under snow, tough, white, and unforgiving. Same mountain. Different conditions.

That’s leadership.

Leadership changes with the season.

Leadership adjusts to terrain.

Leadership requires awareness.

Leadership demands courage.

Leadership tests patience.

Leadership rewards preparation.

Driving those tracks felt like running a business.

You don’t get to the summit by accident. Leadership means choosing the right line up the hill. Leadership means committing when the climb gets steep. Leadership means keeping momentum when others hesitate. Leadership means reading the conditions before they read you.

At nearly 1,800 metres, perspective hits differently.

The higher you climb, the clearer things become. That’s true in the mountains, and it’s true in leadership. When you rise above the noise, the politics, the day-to-day chaos, your leadership sharpens. Your decisions simplify. Your direction becomes obvious.

And here’s the real lesson:

Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the convoy.

Leadership isn’t about horsepower.

Leadership is about responsibility.

Responsibility for the people behind you.

Responsibility for the direction you choose.

Responsibility for making sure everyone gets home safely.

Great leadership feels a lot like standing on top of that mountain, exposed, accountable, but incredibly alive.

Business can consume you if you let it.
Deadlines, targets, meetings, problems to solve… it never really stops.

But today I was reminded that there’s another side to business.

I’m out in nature with my very good friend Marlon De Cruz, CFO and founder of BISTEC Global Services, and instead of talking about spreadsheets and strategy, we found ourselves talking about something far more important, life outside of business.

The truth is, building a business is demanding. It takes focus, commitment and sacrifice. But if you don’t occasionally step away from the noise, you can forget why you started in the first place.

Nature has a way of resetting your thinking. No phones ringing. No emails demanding attention. Just fresh air, good conversation, and the kind of clarity that only comes when you slow down.

Some of the best business insights don’t come from boardrooms, they come from moments like this. A walk. A conversation with a trusted friend. Time to breathe.

Success in business shouldn’t come at the cost of enjoying life.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do… is step away for a while and appreciate what’s around you.

Last weekend, my youngest son Rainer did something most people will never experience.

He was strapped into a V8 Mustang Supercar at Sandown Raceway and hit speeds of up to 250km/h.

As a dad, you feel everything in those moments, pride, nerves, excitement. But more than that, you see a lesson.

Leadership starts long before the boardroom.

Leadership starts at home.

It starts with teaching your children to be open to new ideas.

To say yes to opportunities that stretch them.

To step into environments that feel uncomfortable.

It’s to prepare your child to take it themselves.

Real leadership is about exposure.

He learned.

That’s leadership in action.

And the lesson for all of us?

Whether in business or in life, leadership means staying open to new tracks, new speeds, and new possibilities.
