As the organization’s first employee (outside of the founder), I was able to use my tactical operational and process skills, along with my creative sales drive, to grow it into a viable, thriving organization. Nonprofit CEOs: You know one thing that I get really tired of fighting against in this sector?

Generalizations.

You know, generalizations like when the news said “most nonprofits can’t survive this pandemic!” and now in 2025 …”giving is down because of the economy and other wildness in the world!”

Well, two of my clients each secured 7- and 6- figure gifts in the last few weeks….in the ‘down economy’. (P.S. Not front line/food/SNAP related)

It’s exhausting. 

A few years ago I read The Road Less Stupid by Keith Cunningham. One of the chapters is about these BIG GENERALIZATIONS, and how they kill clarity. 

I find big generalizations also keep us from even creating achievable plans.

We start defeated.

Now, in the #nonprofit sector, we’re used to big false generalizations put upon us:

...We’ll always struggle financially because we’re a nonprofit.
...Donors never want to give toward overhead.
...We won’t get funding if we have too much money in the bank.
…Donors only want to fund projects.

These aren’t true.

There’s a practical, straightforward path to being fully funded. But, it feels counterintuitive. And that’s often misinterpreted as being risky. 

But it’s not risky. It’s a calculated risk that looks a lot like running a successful, growing business. 

So, are you with me as we prep to head into the new year?

Nonprofit CEOs: Here's the truth about those #nonprofit organizations you admire that seem to have more money year after year . . .


❌ They don’t have a MacKenzie Scott gift
❌ They don't have a “magic fundraising bullet”
❌ They don’t have secret DAF access
❌ They don’t have a video that went viral

They’re in a different rhythm.

Disciplined.

Rather than look for the secret "growth hack", they plan and execute each year’s revenue plan in a disciplined rhythm. 

They don’t do urgent. They don’t do quickfix.

Buying wealth screening software or redesigning your website doesn’t solve your funding problems.

Well, I'm always glad when #fundraising makes the list of strategic priorities. Yet, this is exactly where many plans stall. 

Often, leaders call me months later and say, “We can’t execute the plan because we don’t have the money.” 

What they really mean is “We don’t have enough flexible, general operating revenue to hire the people, buy the systems, and build the runway the plan requires.”

And I should even clarify that often departments need to be ALLOWED to do more consistent execution. That means they need to be empowered to STOP transactional activities.

Consistent Execution of fundraising activities that are:
🌟Practical
🌟Relational
🌟Strategic
🌟Business-minded
🌟Investment-level

🗓️Build proper pace relationships w/mission-aligned donors (18-24 mnths).
🗓️Explain to donors why you need their BEST gift, EVERY year.
🗓️Look ahead and know the pipeline that needs to be filled for next year.
🗓️Prioritize tortoise-style fundraising over hare activities that always take too much time and energy.

Nonprofit CEO: One of the cool things about my job is affirming things that are already in your gut. A hunch you’ve had that something is not right...


But, every article your staff reads and webinar they attend continues to fight against that gut feeling. Well, that was me too…

When I shifted into #nonprofit back in 2010 from my corporate career, I went into learning mode about #fundraising. 

I did it all . . .
📚The webinars
📚The downloads
📚The “pick-your-brain” coffees
📚The podcasts
📚The books

I did what they said. We raised more #money . . . but I worked 60-80 hours a week. Everything was time-consuming and URGENT. 

I was exhausted.

My gut said “there’s got to be a better way.” 

I was right. And what I shifted to is STILL what I teach today.

(We 3X’d revenue in 18-months when we shifted into doing this. My clients get crazy results too.)

What I do now . . . 
🔥Create an honest needs-based budget every year
🔥Use a revenue compass to raise to the budgeted need
🔥Reveal org charts that enhance a high-ROI funding models and create balanced portfolio loads
🔥Train teams to lead donors through investment-level conversations to unrestricted gifts
🔥Align fundraising decisions based on hours to dollars alignment
🔥Create tools for teams that empower donors to give their best gift, each year

Remember --- Fully funding your organization every year has WAY LESS to do with traditional fundraising activities. It has WAY MORE to do with running your organization in a way that empowers your team to generate the dollars you need every year to scale.

Go with your gut. Make the change.

Exactly.

Just because something can make #money doesn’t mean you should do it.

Nonprofit CEOs—ask yourself:
 ❓ What activities should my team STOP doing because they drain time and don’t generate revenue?
 ❓ Are we running campaigns & events simply because we always have?
 ❓ If we stopped some of those, could we START more strategic major-gift work that actually moves the needle?
 ❓ And if we made that shift, does my team have the skill set to secure 6- and 7-figure gifts?

Your time is one of your organization’s most valuable assets. Every #fundraising hour should deliver meaningful results—from leadership, staff, and the board.

TIME = MONEY.

Seems fairly simple and straight-forward to me. But, our sector struggles with this shift. 2026 can be the year you make this shift.

“Make a habit of reaching out to people when you don’t need something.” - Justin Welsh

We all know relationships aren’t transactions. This is especially important in fundraising.

Melissa Frueh of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance and I talked about this on this month's podcast episode! Link to the YouTube and Apple Podcast Links in the first comments!

In friendship, we don’t spend weeks wondering what reason we have to reach out to that person. What would I say? What could I show them? What story could I tell? What excuse do I have for reaching out?

We just pick up the phone and call them because we are in a relationship with them. We don’t need anything. It’s natural because we’ve taken that time for it to be like this.

And when the entire sector tells you that fundraising is events, appeals, applications, and campaigns it’s often confusing and hard to convince all parties to make the shift.

It can be the same way with donors. It’s practical relationship building:
☀️Playing the long-game
☀️Taking 12-, 18-, or 24-months to get to know someone
☀️Natural conversations
☀️Reaching out when you don’t need anything.
☀️Comfortably making the ask when it’s a win/win

But we chase, create urgency, & force deadlines. ← Let’s stop this by the way.

This is often a skillset issue. Not everyone has been trained to lead investment-level conversations!

But, you can equip your team to make this shift. It’s not a fast shift, but it builds a truly sustainable organization.

This is what I do every day. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch these shifts in strategy take place. I love how Melissa and her fearless leader Liz Moran Stelk have embraced this shift. They've been eager learners since day one and it's paid off!
