During my time at PA I set up and led the Learning and Performance Innovation service line within the People & Talent practice, helping organisations who want to improve performance, build engagement and modernise their approach to learning.

Director, Learning & Performance Innovation

- Defining and, in collaboration with the leadership academy, implementing BP’s global programme delivery model. This represented a shift from an elective to a transitional framework & entailed the design and delivery of the induction, graduate  and leadership transitions for first level, senior level and group leader levels.
- Acting as a centre of excellence for BP’s University, advising on learning innovation and digitisation, partnering with the academies to build capability & manage successful projects in areas including: technical capability, procurement, safety, trading, organisational design, sales & marketing, and leadership.
- Designing and implementing BP’s online induction programme, utilising our performance-support approach. 4 years after launch the mobile-accessible site is BP’s most popular content, with 1M+ page impressions. Our ‘courses to resources’ approach has revolutionised conceptions of effective learning design within BP, and the wider industry.
- Advising and supporting the organisation in achieving a 60% reduction in learning delivery costs, whilst shifting to a 70/20/10 delivery model.
- Designing, developing and implementing a comprehensive suite of digital tools to be used by graduates, transitioning leaders, including web and native apps, performance support and guidance. 
- Designing, developing and implementing BP’s ‘YouTube’ – a social learning platform which hosting in excess of 3,000 items of video content and used by more than 70k unique users in pursuit of learning and performance goals.
- Managing and administering the global e-learning delivery platform, ensuring that modules supporting regulatory requirements and safe, reliable operations around the world were available and completed - at around 100,000 training days (equivalent) per annum.
-Authoring and advising on the Learning Innovation Toolkit – a global toolkit for learning teams wishing to shift to more effective and efficient models of learning & performance support.

Responsible for online learning, social and informal learning, multimedia learning resources, connectivity tools and performance support solutions.

Head of Online & Informal Learning

- Implementing the BBC’s compliance and regulatory programmes. Shifting the organisation from a position of patchy or non-existent compliance to a systematic programme of compliance across a wide range of areas including legal, ethics, safety and production. This included development of both content and systems.
- Redesign and redevelopment of the BBC’s learning management system, working with the internal development team to bring about and end-to-end redesign of the LMS.
- Creation of 'MOO', a pioneering knowledge-sharing platform for BBC staff.
- Designing and developing the BBC’s online induction programme, production safety, diversity, and leadership programmes
- Implementing the BBC’s first staff social learning platform, aimed at encouraging creative contribution by BBC staff throughout the organisation and resulting in the commissioning of a new BBC programme.
- Authoring of the BBC’s ‘Learning Design Toolkit’, designed to be used by staff throughout the BBC to improve the quality of learning design.

Siemens Communications

- Sales force training: my team developed and deployed a suite of online training modules based around sales training for products and solutions. In addition we pioneered the use of ‘peer-to-peer’ learning, filming successful sales champions around the organisation on a monthly basis. These interventions had a significant impact on sales.
- E-learning for customers: I was responsible for developing and introducing e-learning to be bundled with the sale of Siemens handsets in the UK. This was a major step for the organisation and involved preparing and presenting the business case to the board of directors.
- Award-winning strategy: in 2005 I was responsible for the winning entry for the Learning Awards category ‘Staff Development Strategy’. This reflected our work in introducing a highly effective blended learning model for our field-based engineering staff.
- Content Development leadership: I led and managed a team of eight people, of which the majority were flash developers. Our work broke new ground in the use of flash for e-learning and has since been emulated by a wide variety of e-learning producers. In particular, our use of simulated environments, the integration of video into flash at low bandwidths and the format of our online induction programme which introduced an ‘explore and interview’ format were widely regarded.
- Competency modelling: I was part of a three-person team responsible for the design and implementation of a competency model within Siemens Communications. This was an extensive piece of work, completed entirely by the internal project team, and involved every aspect of the solutions from role profiling, communication, integration with and introduction of electronic appraisal and an online training system.

Head of elearning and multimedia

DeMorgan Communications

Whilst at at Demorgan Communications I was responsible for the design and implementation of a wide range of learning and communications solutions, ranging in nature from UK-wide training programmes through to management interfaces for telephony systems. My key responsibilities included information modelling, development of solution designs, writing proposals, direct sales, software development, training implementation, quality assurance, consultancy.

- Training implementation: I was responsible for the innovative design of a UK-wide training implementation for Barclays Bank. The Gemini project was considered to be the most successful IT training project in the bank’s history.
- Software development I developed a number of solutions using Macromedia Flash and HTML, ranging from telephony training tools through to Management Information interfaces, having taught myself to use these programming languages.

Consultant Psychologist

Yeovil College

I taught Psychology (and later IT) to a wide variety of students – approximately half of whom were adult students. The college itself was designated an HE/FE college and offered at wide range of vocational and non-vocational subjects. My key responsibilities included: tuition of three ‘A’-level Psychology groups, acting as a personal tutor, tuition on HNC, NVQ, GNVQ programmes, lesson-planning and preparing students for examinations. I also taught evening classes – both ‘an Introduction to Psychology’ and a one-year accelerated psychology ‘A’-level.

Highlights
- Published work: in order to better prepare students for examinations I began developing learning resources (including ‘mind maps’) for students. At a colleague’s suggestion I submitted these to Hodder & Stoughton, who subsequently published my materials as a study guide entitled ‘Psychology, A New Introduction – Study Guide’, now in tits first and second editions.
- Technology innovation: I was one of the first in my field to establish a website aimed at sharing teaching and learning resources, and was chosen to lead the department’s strategy on new ways of teaching and learning.
- OFSTED – I was assessed on two different occasions as part of the OFSTED inspection of the college and received the highest possible grade for my teaching approach.

Winner of several awards for people development, strategy, innovation, and learning content, including the Learning & Performance Institute’s Award for Services to the Learning Industry, 2017. Author of ‘How People Learn’ (Kogan Page, May 2019; second edition published Jan 2023).

Began professional life as a psychology lecturer, since worked in consultancy, Siemens, BBC & BP, PA Consulting and Deloitte in roles encompassing learning strategy, culture, leadership, innovation, technology & multimedia. 

A memorable conference speaker, careful leader, & well-known in the corporate learning industry for ground-breaking work & thinking.

I seem to spend quite a lot of time developing simpler, more emphatic ways of highlighting the central problems in our thinking about learning - because if you don't do that, then the nuance, verbosity & erudition prevent people seeing the wood for the trees - and yes, yes, there is a risk of oversimplification, but one I run in service of progress.

Learning is not knowledge transfer. Learning (for all creatures) is the process by which their reactions to experiences, change their behaviour.

If you want to 'do learning' you should be designing experiences that get the right reaction from people.
