Today is a BIG DAY!
And not just because I’ve got to pull up my BIG-BOY-PANTS!

A day for big umbrellas. 
A day for big warm drinks.
A day for big stories. 

It will be a big day for Eddy  as I take to the lecturn at The Royal Courts of Justice. 

I’ve been invited to give a talk at today’s ManKind, a Men’s Health & Wellbeing conference for men working within the Ministry of Justice, and HM Prison & Probation Service. 

They employ over 100,000 people across the UK. Many will be dads, and I know by stats alone some will have walked the journey like mine which doesn’t discriminate. 

I’ll be sharing about my story, and other dads we’ve helped through the work of Eddy  over the past 3 years along with what we can all do to support, see and hear dads in our workplace that have lost a child, have a child with a disability or simply going through a tough time as a dad. 

It’s the first time I’ve shared at a conference, LinkedIn is a much easier platform! 

Over the past few years, my personal and mental health journey has taken more than its fair share of a bruising (iykyk) 

But today isn’t about me. 

It’s about the dads and kids I advocate for.  

Even if i lose my train of thought, turn into a gabbling wreck, or completely lose the ability to speak as i recount my story (iykyk x2!)

I’ll do my best to give those dads and children a voice so everyone can hear their story and we can all get alongside those men together  👊🏻

December never used to be a tough time of year… but since last year it’s now up there… 

Today I’ve been reminded of the tension I often walk between Hope and Disappointment. 

I have been on a real high over the past couple of weeks. 

Momentum building, ideas flowing, things finally lining up. 

Then out of nowhere, a new dream appeared.  Fast, exciting, full of possibility. And just as quickly, it crash landed.

It hit two places at once. The hope of what could be, and the echo of older dreams that never quite made it.

The mix is tough. 

It knocks you sideways for a moment. But it does not mean the direction is wrong. 

It simply shows that I still care, I still dream, and I am still open to the right things finding their place.

So today is not about pushing on. 

Today is about giving the mind, a moment to heal, letting the fog lift, and trusting that hope will find its place again.

If you feel the same today, step outside into the sunshine, take 3 long slow breaths…

Let both feelings settle. 

And remember as long as the sun rises and sets, you can still move forward 👊🏻

Delighted, relieved, chuffed... I was absolutely exhausted. 
But totally worth it!

On Wednesday I had the privilege of speaking at the Royal Courts of Justice for the Ministry of Justice about Eddy, and for the first time, I shared my whole story about Thomas and Alexander.

It happened right at the start of my career 26 years ago, and the knock-on impact has shaped my life ever since. Sharing it here on LinkedIn or on podcasts is one thing - standing in front of 200 people  was something else entirely!

The warm, friendly faces around the room kept me going through the tougher bits. And yes, I still managed to get a few laughs along the way.

Massive thanks to Darren Fearnley for the invitation, and to Nick Elston and Shakeel Ali for sharing their powerful stories. Speaking alongside them was a real privilege.

Backing Yourself vs. Playing It Safe?

What if the biggest risk in your career wasn't taking the leap, but staying exactly where you are?

Standing on Tower Bridge yesterday, I couldn't help but reflect on my journey. That kid from Chester, raised on free school meals, now standing at the center of two worlds that once seemed impossibly distant.

On one side: the City. Finance, insurance, institutions that shaped nearly two decades of my professional life since that first role at the London Stock Exchange. 

On the other: the professional services firms, brilliant minds solving complex problems, the kind of people I've always looked up to.

What hit me walking across my favourite bridge was the realisation that the work I'm building to across the silos teams create fits these worlds naturally.

Where the problems are real, the advice I provide actually lands, and conversations create genuine value.

Behind me: Shad Thames. Still one of my all fave corner of London. 

Thirty years ago, in those same cobbled streets, a PR agency owner sat across from me and said he wanted to invest in my ideas. I was 19, green as they come, but that conversation planted something essential: the possibility that my perspective mattered.

Fast forward through years of building businesses in the trenches, resulting in a successful exit in 2023, and then to my surprise... I felt completely lost. 

Directionless despite the wins. So I asked for some help and reached out to someone I trusted deeply

Nine months ago, over coffee in those same streets of Shad Thames I'd walked as a teenager, he looked at me and said three words that changed everything:

"Back yourself, Scott."

Here's what real self-belief actually looks like:

It's not arrogance. It's the quiet confidence that comes from consistently showing up and doing the work, even when no one's watching.
Confidence isn't discovered; it's built. 

Through practice. 
Through action. 
Through the willingness to be uncomfortable.

The real risk? Standing still. Playing it safe often costs more than any bold move ever will.

I'm launching something new soon. Quietly, steadily, one conversation at a time.

Over breakfast yesterday a friend and former colleague suggested I share the behind-the-scenes journey as this new venture takes shape. 

Not my instinct, but hopefully hers was right! If it helps even one founder, whatever stage you're at, it's worth it.

So here's my question for you: What's one moment when someone told you to "back yourself"? 👇🏼

What did growing up in one walled city teach me about breaking into another?

I grew up in Chester, a Roman walled city. 

Our only glimpse of the City of London in the 80’s was the occasional news bulletin showing men in red braces shouting into their phones and Harry Enfield’s ‘Loadsa Money!’.

By 33, the Square Mile felt impenetrable. Built to keep people like me out.

I didn’t have a degree in finance. I didn’t understand ETFs, RNS, AIM, or FTSE. 
I didn’t know anyone in the Square Mile. 
I didn’t even own a proper suit.

What I did have:

- The belief that fortune favours the brave and the hard workers
- A mindset to lead from the front and from the back
- A knack for building relationships
- A solid work ethic
- A passion for storytelling

Thanks to the recruitment genius Cathy Alford and the best HR ever, Ella Gosling I managed to land a job heading up the studios and events at LSEG  in 2006.  

First train in, every single day. Learned the language of capital markets, often the hard way. Made mistakes. Plenty of them.

But I had great leaders like John Wallace and Martin Graham   guiding me who saw something worth investing in. 

They taught me the time tested mantra of the Exchange, that your word truly is your bond.

I built teams who could translate complex financial stories into content that resonated. Because of where my office was on the 1st at Paternoster Square I also got to network at every breakfast, lunch, and evening event.

Career highlights? Coaching the Italian Deputy CEO through his first AGM, imagine the scene as this northerner taught a highly intelligent Italian to say “house” at the right speed had us both in hysterics on the 7th floor!

But the real magical moment was with the then CEO, transforming how she engaged analysts. Less corporate speak, more authentic narrative. That’s when I knew storytelling could really move markets. A true career milestone and to have been trusted with that opportunity was an absolute delight! Thank you 🙏🏼 

The walls came down, meeting by meeting, conversation by conversation.

Since then? I’ve worked with lots of well known firms across financial services, and count some of the City’s most respected leaders as friends. 

I now advise boards and leadership teams on how they communicate their purpose and value.

You can’t control where you begin. But you can control what you do next.

Plans, and people are coming together nicely for what’s next on this journey.
