About 40% of executives fail within the first 18 months in a new role.

And according to DDI’s global research, nearly 1 in 3 leaders describe their transition as highly stressful.

Such failure is rarely about competence. More often, it comes down to three things: people, culture, and politics.

Add to that the stress of ambiguity, the need to rebuild relational capital, and the absence of structured support — and it’s easy to see why so many transitions fail.

Supporting leaders through this phase isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a performance imperative — for both the leader and the organization.

Setbacks in life are inevitable. It’s never a question of if — only when.
The real question is: Will I be ready when they come?

In my work with leaders and organisations, one of the most common reasons I hear for delaying the deeper work is: “I’m too busy right now. There’s so much happening. Let's do it, later…”

But too often, later arrives as a full-blown crisis and that’s when I’m brought in to see if any quick fixes are still possible. 

By then, it’s an uphill climb. Recovery takes enormous effort, energy, emotional regulation, clarity, and willpower — and the outcome is far from guaranteed.

When I worked in the healthcare industry, we used to say: “Prevention is better than cure.” Yet, few wanted to invest in prevention — the ROI felt too intangible, too hard to measure. But once the crisis hit, it was always clear: cure was far more expensive, emotionally heavier, and the outcomes never certain.

Leadership is no different. 

💡It’s far easier to build capacity, expand your impact, and anchor yourself in vision and authority before the storm hits, not once you’re already in free fall.

As Brené Brown said in a conversation with Adam Grant:
“Leaders are the only people in the world where high performance is expected and coaching is not seen as normative.”

Maybe it’s time we questioned the illusion that we have to do it all alone. Because the truth is — almost no one does.
