John Lewis have nailed it this year.

They’ve gone super targeted, millennial & Gen X dads with teenage sons. And it’s working.

My feed is full of videos of dads reacting to the ad. Real teary eyed, heartstring pulling stuff. And those reactions are what’s taking it even further… the emotion is being amplified by real people sharing how it made them feel.

Even though it’s focused on dads, everyone can relate. Mums are feeling it. Parents of younger kids (like me!) are feeling it. It taps into that conversation of how fast time goes and how quickly kids grow up. 

Throw in a bit of 90s nostalgia and suddenly the people who might not usually care about a Christmas ad are talking about it, sharing it, tagging friends in it, sending it in WhatsApp groups.

A big win for John Lewis this year (might be my favourite yet). 👀

I'm sharing this because I know it's one thing to be told 'it happens', and another to actually see it in action. 

Sometimes PR really is about playing the waiting game. Editors are busy, timelines can change and results often take months to appear. But big credit to Georgia Stephenson (Create Gift Love) who has the right strategy, persistence and patience we preach about at PR Dispatch.

Create Gift Love

Every year since 2017, PR Dispatch cancellations have come in thick and fast in November. And this November (especially in this climate) is no different. 

But here's the thing....The feedback is always:
"We'll be back"
"Love what you have created"
"Thanks for making PR easy and accessible"
"We don't have the time right now, but love it"

I’ve switched off my inbox notifications, but some days they still get to me. They consume and distract me. Why? Why now?

I took some time yesterday to sit back and think about why this bothers me so much. When I get past the surface of “they’re cancelling,” what hits me is that brands are pausing something that gives them crucial visibility at one of the most important times of the year.

Think about all the features the online press will be writing in the coming weeks: gift guides, Christmas Day games, Boxing Day walks, tips for keeping your business running while taking a break.

The press need your ideas for their stories, so now is not the time to throw in the towel.

So, if you have a LinkedIn contact that runs or works for an eCommerce or retail business, tag them here. It's not lost revenue that's keeping me up at night; it's missed opportunity, and whether through our memberships or free resources, we want you to be seen before the year is out.

I wouldn’t.

PR is built on credibility, consistency, and connection. If I can’t earn coverage, tell my story, or build trust for my own brand, how can I teach other brands to do it?

This year, I made sure my own PR tech platform practiced what we preach. And here’s a glimpse of some of the coverage we’ve had so far 👇 each feature built around a different PR hook, ranging from the Evening Standard, Women’s Health to AllBright.

Because in PR, visibility isn’t optional, it’s proof of trust.

Next Wednesday, we’re dropping something new, and we really shouldn't be giving it away for free.

We’ve created a brand new resource designed to take the thinking out of PR. So you’ll always know what the UK press wants before they ask. 

It’s the kind of insight that usually sits behind a paywall, subscription, or agency retainer… but we’re choosing to release it openly.

Here’s why:

This took time. It took industry knowledge, relationships, experience, and a lot of digging. It’s valuable. Not in a “marketing spin” way, but in the sense that it genuinely helps eCommerce brands make better decisions and feel less overwhelmed.

So why free?
Because this is something I wish I’d had when I was starting out.
Because eCommerce brands deserve clarity without gatekeeping.
Because helping people understand the press, can completely change their visibility.

But I’ll also admit… giving something like this away for nothing feels both generous and slightly uncomfortable. It’s a reminder that valuing your work doesn’t always mean putting a price tag on it, sometimes it means backing yourself enough to share it widely, knowing it will help the right people.

So yes, this resource is free.
And yes, maybe it “shouldn’t” be.

But I believe in giving eCommerce brands every advantage possible. And this is one of them.

Brands always ask us, 'How do you PR your PR?'

This recently landed in my inbox and is the perfect example of how to do it well.

People don’t always care about your press coverage on its own, but TBCo have made it impossible to scroll past. They’ve turned press mentions into an email that actually tells a story about trends, timing and product demand.

Instead of 'Here’s our press', it becomes 'Here’s why this matters, and here’s how you can be part of it.'

👉They take a Cosmopolitan trend piece and turn it into a moment.
👉They turn gift guide inclusions into products you suddenly need.
👉They take a styling feature and use it to tell a brand story that actually resonates.

This is PR with context, not just screenshots.

Such a good example of using press to build desire, credibility and sales, rather than treating it like a box ticking exercise. TBCo absolutely nailed it.
