When you invest $30,000 in a booth and walk away with a stack of unqualified business cards, you're not getting ROI.

You're getting frustrated.

This week, our matchmaking algorithm decided that a fintech investor and a salsa instructor were a perfect professional match.

Spoiler: they were not.

It was one of those “oh no” moments that only founders of event tech tools truly understand.

Our Butler usually pairs people based on shared goals and intent. Or it supposed to.

At a demo suddenly started acting like it had joined a dating app on its own terms.

Random matches, irrelevant intros, and one attendee even messaged us: “I think your AI is acting weird.”

Fair enough.

But every “bad match” taught us something.

Our intent model was weighting profile keywords too heavily. We had to change that.

Context (the why behind the connection) mattered more than we expected. I was pretty bullish on this topic, but there has to be a balance.

Humans are actually okay with surprises… just not confusing ones.

We fixed it within a few days and honestly, it made our matching engine 10x better.

Now, as we get ready for our Event Butler demo launch, I’m more convinced than ever that the best products aren’t perfect.

They’re just honest enough to keep improving in public.

I’ve talked to so many organizers this year who tell me the same thing:

AI assistants are like interns with infinite confidence and zero context.

I asked my Replit agent to finish a video player feature. And he did something more.

I asked why, and it replied:

“You’re absolutely right to call that out. I completed the video player work you requested, then incorrectly started working on a password reset feature that you never asked for. I don’t have a good explanation for why I did that — it was simply an error on my part.”

What we want: 
Cheap labor.

What we get:
AI scope creep.

Somewhere between “I’ll just fix this one thing” and “let’s rebuild authentication,” my agent turned into a full-stack overachiever with commitment issues.

But honestly, that’s what building products feels like now.

You ask for one thing.
Something unexpected happens.
You pretend it was part of the roadmap.

Still… this moment reminded me that AI won’t replace humans anytime soon.

Not because it’s dumb, but because it’s too eager to help.

What’s the funniest or strangest thing an AI has done for you “by mistake”?

Ever watched people at an event who are supposed to be networking… just circling the coffee table like satellites waiting for a connection that never happens?

I have. Too many times.

And I did even more times.


A few years back, I was at a WebSummit.

Beautiful venue, great speakers, huge turnout. But by day two, the “networking zone” looked like a high school dance. 

Everyone on their phones. No one talking.

The organizers had spent tens of thousands on a “smart networking” app that looked good in a pitch deck.

In real life, it was chaos. 

People matched with random profiles, missed meeting times, and ended up defaulting to “just whoever’s nearby.”

That’s when I started sketching the first version of what became Event Butler’s matchmaking engine.

Instead of guessing who should meet whom, we designed a 3-layer framework.

1. Intent-based profiles — people say why they’re attending, not just who they are.
2. Smart pairing — we find mutual goals, not job titles.
3. Scheduling — meetings fit naturally into their day, not on top of it.

Simple, structured, and surprisingly human.

If you could fix just one thing about how people connect at your events, what would it be?

Everyone loves talking about great networking, but nobody agrees on what a successful match actually is.

Last month, I sat with an organizer who told me, “Roland, if two people talk for more than three minutes, I’m calling that a win.”

Fair enough.

With most event networking, three minutes is a miracle.

But when we started building Event Butler, we had to get serious:

What does a successful connection actually look like?

Because if we can’t define success, we can’t design for it.

So here’s the simple, but insanely helpful framework we built:
1️⃣ Relevance:

Did both sides feel the intro made sense?
No more “investor meets salsa instructor” situations. We’ve had enough of those.

2️⃣ Outcome:

Did something happen after the conversation?
A follow-up call, a shared resource, a deal, a demo. Anything that moves life forward.

3️⃣ Energy Score:

Did they want to keep talking?
If the vibe was “I need to escape,” that’s a fail, even if the roles were technically aligned.

4️⃣ Effortlessness:

Did all this happen without the attendee hunting, scrolling, or stressing?
If it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t a successful match.
Turns out, connection quality is measurable, and when you measure it, you can improve it.

That’s why Event Butler is built around outcomes, not vanity metrics.

How do you measure networking success at your events?

We measure event success by registrations and badge scans.

Not by how many real connections are made. 

That’s the problem.

I know it is hardto put a metric on that. Short and long-term measures differ.

But somewhere along the way, “engagement” became a spreadsheet instead of a feeling.

We count how many people showed up, but not how many showed up for each other.

I’ve seen events with thousands of attendees and zero energy, and others with 100 people that sparked entire partnerships, startups, and careers. 

Guess which one people still talk about?

Badge scans ≠ meaningful connections.
App logins ≠ engagement.
High attendance ≠ high impact.

If the ROI of an event ends the moment people leave the venue, it wasn’t really networking. It was logistics.

That’s why I’m obsessed with building tools that help organizers measure what actually matters:
