I got my first paying job at age seven.
Not mowing lawns.
Not delivering papers.
I was in a fast-food television commercial.

I didn’t know it then, but that was the first chapter of a life that would never follow a straight line.

A few chapters later, I enlisted in the U.S. Army, not out of patriotism at first, but to avoid getting expelled from high school.

Discipline found me before I found discipline.

In my late teens and early twenties, there were long seasons of loneliness. 
The kind that doesn’t show up on the outside but echoes loudly when you’re alone with your thoughts.

Then there was a turning point.
I met a woman.
Six months later, I asked her to marry me.
This October, we’ll celebrate 35 years together.

That chapter taught me something critical: life isn’t a résumé, it’s a story. And the best stories are shaped by bold decisions, not perfect plans.

Another defining chapter?
The men who stepped into my life and refused to let me drift. Men who challenged me. Men who called me out. Men who held me accountable when excuses were easier.

That Brotherhood didn’t just influence my story; it changed it.

Viktor Frankl didn’t say what drives a man is pleasure or power. He said what drives a man is meaning, and without it, even success feels empty.

In Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl makes a bold claim: Meaning isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

He watched men endure unimaginable suffering, and the ones who survived weren’t the strongest or the smartest.

They were the ones who believed their lives still mattered.

That truth still hits today.

As men, we don’t just want comfort. We want significance.

We want to know our work matters.

Our leadership matters.

Our presence in our family makes a difference.

Decisions Under Fire: Make the Hard Call Sooner

Every leader faces the moment of hesitation.
 
The pressure is high. The fire is real. The stakes are rising.

And yet, the price of waiting often exceeds that of deciding. The longer you hesitate, the more opportunities slip away.

The word “decide” comes from the Latin dēcīdere, meaning “to cut off.” The suffix -cide means “to kill.”
 
When you decide, you empower yourself. You eliminate doubt, you kill off every other option, and you step forward with confidence. That is leadership under fire.

5 Warrior Truths About Decisions
Indecision is its own decision. Silence and delay create drift.

Every “yes” demands a graveyard of “no’s.” You cannot pursue everything. Warriors know the cost of clarity.

Hesitation erodes trust. Your people would rather follow a flawed but firm leader than one frozen in fear.

Certainty is rare. You won’t get perfect intel. The battlefield rewards those who move when it matters.

Decisions forge identity. Every cut sharpens your edge and defines who you are becoming.

The Warrior’s Charge
Warrior Leaders don’t sit on fences; they burn them. They choose the path, even in the face of fire.

The question isn’t: “Will this decision be easy?” The real question is: “Will I have the courage to make it before it’s too late?”

The Leadership Challenge
Your greatest enemy isn’t a bad decision. It’s no decision at all.

The battlefield of leadership rewards action, not hesitation. The longer you delay, the weaker your position becomes. It’s time to act.

Most people set goals. Very few write their future so clearly that they can smell it.

Recently, as part of a Mastermind Group I’m in, Ken Rutkowski challenged the group to create their own Vivid Vision—a written snapshot of an ordinary day three years from now.

This exercise came from the book Vivid Vision, written by CAMERON HEROLD. In this book, Cameron shares how to craft your own Vivid Vision to support your business and personal life. 

Not highlights.

Not accomplishments.

A lived day.

So I wrote it.

January 9, 2029.
I wake up on the porch of a Montana lake house, coffee in hand, pine trees in the air, fog lifting off the water as birds skim the lake’s surface. The pace is calm. Intentional. Earned.

That vision continues through the day:
Family gathered together, with kids, grandkids, celebrations that actually matter

A reminder on the wall of crossing the finish line at a world championship. Proof that discipline compounds

Letters from men whose lives changed after stepping into the Warrior Forge. Men living with intention, not drift

A team message recapping global stages, six continents, and impact measured in people, not applause

A call confirming the scheduling for additional clean-water wells will take place. Purpose funding real outcomes

Financial freedom that reflects stewardship, not ego

And travel with my wife, paid in full, experienced fully, remembered forever

Here’s what surprised me most:
Writing this wasn’t a fantasy.

It was alignment.

A Vivid Vision doesn’t predict the future. It recruits it.

Once it’s written, every decision has a standard.

Every excuse gets exposed.

Try this for yourself:
Block uninterrupted minutes.
Fast-forward three years.
Write one ordinary day, from morning to night.

Don’t edit. Don’t impress. Just tell the truth.

If your future self read what you actually did last week, what would they ask you to change first?

PS: Clarity is expensive in the best way. Once you know the day you’re building toward, drifting starts to feel irresponsible.

If your leadership requires more intensity every year, your performance model isn’t scaling.

Most leaders assume rising pressure is “the cost of growth.”

It’s not.

What’s really happening is quieter and more dangerous:

Decisions slow as complexity increases
Execution depends on constant availability
Authority bottlenecks instead of flowing
Focus fractures under competing priorities

This isn’t a motivation issue.

It’s not a discipline problem.

And it’s definitely not solved by grinding harder.

It’s a design problem.

Many leaders are still operating with systems built for a smaller role, fewer decisions, and lower stakes. When responsibility scales, but structure doesn’t, intensity fills the gap, and that gap keeps widening.

Sustainable leadership doesn’t rely on effort.

It relies on alignment.

Quick challenge:
Identify one decision that should move easily but doesn’t.

That friction is a signal, not a flaw.

Pay attention to it this week.

High performers don’t win by pushing harder forever.

They win by upgrading how performance actually works.

But Kingdom builders know better.

Intentional reflection clears the noise.
