in the last 24 months, i've landed 10+ million cold emails in the primary inbox.
there are 4 things I understand better than most:

1. going all in on one provider

if Google has a bad week, your entire operation dies. then you're starting from scratch with 14-21 days of warmup ahead of you. diversify or you WILL regret it eventually.

2. bad DNS configuration

your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records need to be absolitely perfect. if you mess this up, email providers flag you immediately. a vast majority either skip this or do it wrong.

3. using the wrong inbox provider

there are 2 paths here:

a) paying $7/inbox directly to Google
b) using the cheapest reseller

on one hand, you’re overpaying. on the other, you’re guaranteed sh*t deliverability.

the middle path exists. you just have to find it.

4. skipping the warmup period

jumping straight into sending thousands of emails is the easiest way to burn through your inboxes. you NEED at least 14 days to build reputation.

tl;dr:

think of this like building credit before asking for a loan.

throttling is when email providers deliberately slow, stagger, or quietly deprioritise your sends to protect inboxes from suspicious behaviour.

and because it often starts invisibly..

a vast majority of teams don't realise their deliverability has been compromised UNTIL their pipeline starts shrinking.

how it works:

ai filters rely on behavioural scoring to determine whether a sender appears safe and predictable or high-risk.

if your sending pattern suddenly deviates from historic norms, even slightly, filters may intervene.

the most common triggers:

1. rapid increases in send velocity
2. identical templates deployed across multiple inboxes
3. inconsistent timing patterns
4 sudden changes in engagement signals

these don't look malicious to humans. but to automated filtering systems, they resemble automation spikes or abusive behavior.

even clean domains can get throttled if their behavioral fingerprint shifts too quickly.

and because email providers prioritize user safety, they'll limit or slow sends long before issuing explicit warnings.

what you need to know: 

timing is one of the easiest signals for filters to analyse. and one of the hardest for outreach teams to notice.

when an inbox or domain is being throttled, sends don’t necessarily stop… they just stop behaving normally.

you may notice:

→ long delays between batches
→ emails leaving the sequencer at uneven intervals
→ messages that appear "stuck" before sending out in slow trickles

these timing anomalies are often dismissed as tool glitches. but they're actually early-stage throttling behaviours.

the challenge is that these anomalies surface quietly. you won't see a bounce or a block and your sequencer won't warn you.

but timing irregularity is one of the strongest early indicators that filters are stepping in behind the scenes.

email providers run dynamic behavioural models that analyse patterns across thousands of senders.

when your activity resembles a pattern associated with risk, throttling kicks in automatically.

patterns include:

→ sudden list expansions
→ inconsistent send velocity across days
→ repetitive content with minimal variation
→ overlapping campaigns across multiple inboxes
→ identical timing windows (bursts at 9:00 AM daily)
→ low engagement followed by volume spikes

but filters alone don't punish individual mistakes…

only patterns.

and once those patterns become recognisable, throttling becomes unavoidable. even when your tools show everything is "working."
