I put him on the spot.

"Talk about me. Right now."

What he said next hit me harder than I expected.

I was at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Just finished keynoting for 1,400 HR professionals at CPHR BC.

And honestly? I had no idea if what I just did on that stage would land.

This is my craft.

And I'm always striving to become better.

I never give the same keynote twice.

I keep experimenting. Keep trying things that might fall flat. Might be awkward. Might not land.

Because if I'm asking audiences to embrace discomfort and uncertainty, I need to be doing it too.

But that means I walk off stage, never quite knowing if I nailed it or missed it.

So I did something vulnerable. I asked for feedback.

Riaz Meghji, a fellow keynote speaker and dear friend, was there.

I ask him to talk about my keynote on camera. Put him on the spot.

Something is terrifying about asking someone to evaluate you in real time.

No filter. No time to think about it. Just raw reaction.

He starts with "I will be your groupie till the end of time."

Then he talks about the frequency I delivered on. How I brought the audience along for the ride. The empowerment I gave them that change doesn't happen to you, it happens for you.

He tells me he's seen me speak virtually before.

But seeing me in person was different. Special.

"The joy, the smile, the smile does not go away. It's a gift."

Here's what this moment exemplifies for me: The power of network and community.

The road gets lonely.

Living life on the road, city to city, stage to stage, it's isolating in ways people don't see.

That's why I'm so grateful for my speaker colleagues. The ones who understand this life.

When we collide and support one another? It's such a treat.

But here's my encouragement to everyone in the speaking industry, no matter how far you've come in your career:

Be mindful who you surround yourself with.

Focus on MUTUAL value exchange.

Give to others. Support those you admire and aspire to be like.

Don't just take. Don't just network. Actually contribute.

Because I promise you: That support will come back to you 10 fold.

It certainly has for me.

Growth doesn't happen in comfort.

It happens when you're brave enough to ask for the truth.

And when you're generous enough to give it back.
